more than two million acres were being

- TE EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI

- cultivated on contour.

In addition 83,552 acres of land were
planted in trees; 77,892 acres were put

- Into pasture; 1,261 miles of terraces were

constructed; 24,925 acres of land were

~ drained; 2, 611 farm ponds were construc-

ted and 7,153 acres were improved for
wildlife production.

Progress was also made in flood con-
trol. In 1953 Congress authorized the

establishment of 60 pilot watersheds

where small watershed protection meth-
ods are tested and proved, Throughout
the state 46 applications ffom small water-
shed groups have been received. Of this
number 30 have been approved by the
State Soil Conservation committee and
transmitted to Washington. .

Many of us are so use to thinking in
terms of owning our farms that we
sometimes forget that the land doesnt
actually belong to us. All we actually
own is the right to use this land dur-
ing our lifetime.

Along with owning the use of this
land comes the responsibilty of caring for

it and passing it on to the next generation

in as good shape, if not in better shape,
than we received it and a soil conserva-
tion plan will insure that you do your
part in preserving the valuable natural
resources for future generations.

If you have not already done so,
get in touch with your local soil conser-
vationist Get to know him and let him
help you plan a program for your farm

- its good business.and you owe it to

yourself as well as those who aril work
the Jand after you.

Broilers Lead Other
Farm Income Crops

Last year, for the first time, broilers -

brought in more money to Georgia farm-
ers than cotton, according to Arthur Gan-
non, poultryman, College of Agriculture
Extension Service. Georgias broiler in-
dustry, therefore, ranks as the No. 1
source of farm cash income now, he
said.

The poultryman cited figures on broil-

er production for 1955 released by the
Federal-State Crop Reporting Service .
showing the number to be even larger

than we expected a total of 177,642,000

birds, valued at $125,284,000. ee
Since the first year estimates were

made int 1935, broiler production had in-

creased every year except 1946, the poul-

tryman stated. In 1955 there was an in-

-crease of 15 percent over the 1954 number

grown, and a 23 percent increase in the
value received for them.

The average live weight of Georgia
broilrs marketed last year was 2.9
pounds. the average price per pound live
weight was 24.3 cents, compared with
22 cents in 1954 and 26.6 cents in 1953.

No figures are given on the cost per
pound of growing broilers er the profit,
since there are so many factors involved,

More Inspectors Serve
Agricultural Industry

In order to be of greater service to
the farmers of Georgia the State De-
partment of Agriculture has increased
its force of fertilizer inspectors.

Today the Department has 83 per-
sons trained to take fertilizer samples

as compared with only 57 last year, 45
in 1954 and 48 in 1953.

Lists of fertilizer inspectors and oth-
er inspectors for the Department of
Agriculture have been furnished all
county agents and vocational agricul-
ture teachers.

Farmers who wish to have samples
of fertilizer tested should contact their
county agents or vocational agriculture
teachers who can furnish them the
names of the inspectors serving their
respective counties.

Heavy Grazing Checks

Growth of Grass Roots

.

Pasture at right over-run with weeds shows effect of over-
grazing, as compared with deferred pasture at left, ;

When Delilah cropped Sam-
sons locks, the Biblical hero lost
his strength till his hair grew
out again. The same thing hap-

ens to grasses, according to

rider of S.C.S. If you remove
too much of the grass top growth
by grazing or mowing it closely,
the roots will quit growing until
the tops recover.

He found this true in testing
both cool-season and warm-sea-
son grass species. Taking off
half or more of the foliage during
the growing season caused root
growth to halt for a time after
each clipping. An exception was
orchardgrass after the first clip-
ping. ~

A single cutting that Pemoved
most of the foliage stopped root
growthusually within 24 hours
for periods ranging from 6 to 18
days. The root growth didnt re-
sume till the top growth was well
advanced. Repeating these se-
vere clippings periodically, as in
a system of rotation grazing, pre-
Vented root growth of all grasses
for 25 to 45 days.

The percentage of roots that
stopped growing varied with the
amount of top that was taken
off.

With a ainaie clipping of 50
percent of the foliage, 2 to 4
percent of the grass roots stopped

all the roots were growing again,
and the plants were also produc.
ing some new roots. But remov-
ing 90 percent of the foliage
halted root growth completely for
17 days, and 40 percent of the
roots were still inactive at the
conclusion of the 33-day experi-
mental period.

But removing 40 percent or
less of the foliage didnt halt root
growth. And clipping parts of
bunchgrass plants stopped root
growth for only those parts. This
characteristic would seem to
make cattles patchy? grazing
a desirable habit.

Crider believes the damage
from repeated heavy clippings is
significant in soil conservation
and pasture management; reduc-
ing the top more than half upsets
the functioning of the root system
and the plant as a whole. Because
of continuous suppression of .
aboveground growth, the grass
eant replenish its food reserves.
So the effects of root inactivity
are lasting. The plant thus weak:
ened is less able to resist erosion
and grazing, as well as drought,
cold and disease.

This is striking evidence that
close grazing or mowing during
the growing seasonespecially in
periods of stress or in the Jate
fallmay be practiced at the ex-
pense of stand establishment and

growing for 14 days. After that,

maintenance,

postage. No checks.

New York farmers alone spent
$169,000,000 for feeds brought.
from outside the State in 1949,
according to Richard Bradfield
of Cornell University. This was
by far the largest cash expendi-|
ture. It was almost twice as
big as their expenditure for farm
labor, six times their expendi-
ture for lime and fertilizer, and
seven times. the amount that
they spent on their farm taxes.
How can they increase their net}
income by reducing their ex-
penditures for feed?

Grass has

the country.

The cheapest source of di-

grass. The dairy and livestock
farmer should supply as mueh
as possible of the feed needed

the form of pasture and in the
winter in the form of hay or
grass silage. Grass should con-
