designed outfit, in the spring, when crops
will be up and needing water.
Georgia farmers experiences in the
drought year of 1954 and their general
acceptance of irrigation as a profitable
agricultural practice resulted in more than
doubling both the number of irrigation
systems and the number of acres irriga-
ted in the state in 1955.
Citing results of a survey by county
agents, Huston says there were 1,905
irrigation systems used in irrrigating
58,651. Georgia acres last year. In 1954,
there were only 792 systems, with 27,701
acres under irrigation.
Of*the six crops studied in the survey,
tobacco had the largest increase in num-
ber of acres irrigated in 1955 over 1954.
Last year 16,307 acres of the leaf crop
were under irrigation, compared to only
8,932 in 754.
_ Other increases noted in the irriga-
tion comparison between 54 and 55 in-
cluded: pastures, from 10,228 acres to
18,531; truck crops, from 3,267 to 7,911;
corn, from 2,539 to 6,550; peanuts, from
251 to LTO: and cotton, from 276 to 976.
It is significant that the irrigation in-
creases came in a year of record yields
on nearly all crops, the Extension irri-
gation specialist pointed out. Even with
; the rainfall we had in 1955, farmers who
irrigated got increases in yields large
enough to make irrigation profitable. Be-
cause of the rainfall distribution, there
are times nearly every year when bene-
fits can be derived from irrigation.
Woods Burning Advice
ls Offered to Farmers
Information on a rather controversial
subject burning in slash and longleaf
pine forests in'South Georgia has been
given in a bulletin written by Agricul-
tural Extension Service Forester Dorsey
Dyer.
Much fee was lost in slash and ~
longleaf pine areas in 1954 and 1955 sim-
ply because we let the woods get entirely
too rough and hazardous, Dyer pointed
out. Most farmers are going to burn
their woods this year if they get good
burning conditions. The dry weather dur-
ing December and part of January will
cause much of the burning to be done
during February, the forester stated.
He asked county agents to study the
proper procedures for safe and helpful
burning and to pass the information anes
to farmers in their countries.
The 14-page bulletin is illustrated a
shows step by step procedure of the pre-
scribed burning. Such burns, Dyer said,
will help reduce the number of wild

Market Research Now
Studies of possible adjustments i
peanut production, fundamental work on
the chemical make-up of oil seeds and
peanuts; and research on potential mark-
ets for fats and oils as plasticizers were
cited by USDAs Oilseeds and Peanut
Research and Marketing Advisory Com-
mittee as high-priority research needs at
its annual meeting in Washington.
The proposed economic research to
help farmers adjust peanut production
to changing market conditions would in-
dicate the probable supply and price posi-
tion of soybeans and other oliseeds that
might be grown on acreage diverted from
peanuts.
Expanded research on the chemical
ecmposition of peanuts, soybeans, tung-
nuts, and flaxseed should aim at improv-
_ed product quality and new outlets, the
committee indicated.
