~ Not Planting Allotment
No Reason For Losing tt

BY PHIL CAMPBELL

sc aeioner of Agriculture

_ Many farmers have responded favor-
ably to my suggestion that they, in times
of crop surpluses, be allowed to keep
their acreage allotments on major crops
such as cotton, peanuts and tobacco,

a whether or not S plant their allotted

acreage.

-E inde such a suggestion aiken ap-
pearing before members of the U. S.
Senate Agriculture - committee at their
recent committee hearing in Macon. Since

_the idea themselves,
- At the hearing in Macon I told the

ions study farm problems, that in

my opinion the farmer is actually doing
the government a favor if he does not
plant government supported crops when

| the nation is facing a surplus problem.

PRESENT SYSTEM

Under the present system, if a farmer
does not want to plant his acreage allot-
ment on one or more of the major crops

he can have the allotment distributed

to other farmers in his county who would

like to plant the crop, I see no eblccuon

to this.

The law stipulates, Roweyer that a
farmer must plant his crop allotment

~ occasionally or his allotment will be

taken from him. In such cases Georgia can
lose crop acreage which may be given

to farmers of other states.

In view of the fact the government is
| often faced with the problem of market-
| ing crop surpluses, just as at the present,

_I can not understand why it continues to
force farmers to plant these crops.

WOULD REDUCE PRODUCTION

I know for a fact that many of our
cotton, peanut and tobacco farmers plant

- their allotments on certain occasions only

because the allotment will be taken from
them if they do not plant. I am convin-

ced that by cooperating with the farmer
who does not desire to plant his allot-

| ment, the government could reduce pro-

1956 Pale, Slick Tobacco

To Be Discounted U.S.D.A.

The U. S. Department of Agriculture
nas announced that it plans to discount

any pale and slick tobaccos that may ~

be offered for loan in the. price support

_ program for ee 1956 flue-cured tobacco

crop.

proposed action arises from the fact that
the quantity of pale and slick? tobacco
entering flue-cured markets rose signif-
icantly with the 1955 crop.

Dates Listed For Sixteen
Fat Cattle Shows, Sales

The dates for 16 fat cattle shows and
sales over the state have been announced
by the Agricultural Extension Service.

Those announced include Americus,
Jan. 18-19; Dawson, March 13; Claxton,
March 21; Glennville, March 27; Valdos-
ta, March 29; Sylvester, April 2; Swains- ~
boro, April 2; Alma, April 4; Albany,
April 10-11; Commerce, April 14 (show
only): Ashburn, April 17-18; Atlanta,
April 17-18; Douglas, April 24: States-
boro, April 25; Sylvania, April 26 and

Tastman, May 4.

duction of these major crops by as much
as 10 to 15 percent in a single year.

Many of the farmers I have talked
to since the Macon hearing have agreed

_with me. They cant understand why

the government should penalize them for
not planting when they are actually will-

: ing to help the nation by not adding to

the crop surplus that now constitutes one
of the major farm problems of the ad-
ministration.

If a farmer is willing to cut down
en his crop production at times of crop
surpluses and high storage costs, it seems
to me that the government should be
extremely happy to cooperate. Certain-
ly the farmer should not be penalized
when he himself takes action that will
help the government solve some of its
complicated farm problems.

When there is no surplus I see no
reason why unwanted acreage should not
be distributed among farmers who do
wish to plant the crop.
