Christmas On The Sabbath
Suggests Religious Theme
Because Christmas this year falls on
the Sabbath, Americans everywhere
should be especially aware of its true

meaning, that is, a religious holiday
celebrating the birth of the greatest

teacher on religion the mee has ever
_ known.

Unfortunately, many people this year
will associate Christmas with Commerce.
Ministers, editorial writers and orators
annually complain that Christmas is be-
ing over-commercialized in the U. S.

~ While much of their criticism is valid,

it is equally true that in a nation possess-
ing the almost unbelievable wealth of
the United States it is probably inev-
itable that some people will associate
Christmas with Commerce. However,
the really important thing is not how
Christmas is accepted by an un-thinking
few, but how it is accepted by the in--

He dividual himself.

_ This year, as silos bulge with boun-

tiful agricultural production and depart-
ment store counters are piled high, Am-
_ ericans need not be ashamed of Christ--

mas. Rather, they should be proud that
we are capable of producing wealth such
that no American family need go hungry
on Christmas Day and no American child
should miss getting a visit from Santa

| Claus.

If there is one dune that should be
remembered above all else in connection
with celebration of this great religious
holiday, it is the importance of sharing
our material blessings at Christmas time.
On December 25, 1955 let us remember

this, and in so doing enjoy the true Christ-

mas Spirit. The a of the man called

insect control program is the only thing
that kept him from making three bales
per acre on his demonstration plot. He

| made the first of five applications of

poison June 1, the last on Sept. 1. He be-
lieves he stopped poisoning two or three
applications too soon, and feels the ap-
plications should have been at closer in-
tervals.

Thin Thick Timber How

Forestry Expert Urges

Both time and prices are right fox
Georgia farmers to thin their crowded
timberlands, according to Extension Ser-

vice forester Dorsey Dyer.

Dyer recommends. that landowners
inspect their woodlands closely to see
whether stands are too thick and trees

too crowded. If such is the case, he sug-

gests thinning before the next growing
season begins in the spring.

The current great demand for pulp-

. wood and the good price it is bringing

makes it advantageous for the farmer to
thin thick stands now and sell cut trees
for pulpwood.

one step in cotton production and make
your best yield.

In his entire cotton operation this
year, Dabbs made 76 bales on 45 acres.
Evidence of the fact that his farming pro-
gram is successful generally is seen in his
production of 125 bushels of corn per
acre on 45 acres planted; 60 bus. of oats

per acre on 30 acres planted; and 45 bus.

of wheat per acre on a planting of 15
acres.

FROM CITY TO FARM

Cotton champ Dabbs left the farm in
1945 to work in a furniture store in Car-
tersville. In 1954 he returned to the farm,
to make a living for my family, he
says. The family includes Mrs. Dabbs and

three children, Shirley Ann, 16, Robert,

15, and Janice, 10.

W. H. Sell, agronomist and cotton spec-
jalist for the Agricultural Extension Ser-
vice, notes that Dabbs comes from the
states number one cotton county. Bar-
tow County farmers made more than
20.000 bales of cotton this year on about
17,000 acres. A county average of better
than a bale per acre!

Bartow County Agent A. C, Holland
is the man who works with Bartow farm-
ers on their cotton production programs.

The awards dinner also saw recogni-
