Lists Food Promotion Dates
The
states Farmer-Food Retailer
Committee met last week and agreed to
sponsor outstanding promotion campaigns
in behalf of several food products im-
portant to Georgia farmers, retailers and
consumers,
The committee was appointed two
years ago for the purpose of improving
relations between farmers and retailers.
Its promotion work is designed primar-
ily to help dispose of food production sur-
pluses, but it also aids the retailer through
increased sales.
Membership on thie committee con-
sists of farmers, retailers, and representa-
| ~-tives.of the Agricultural Extension Ser-
vice, and the Farm Bureau. The Com-
missioner of Fee ere is also a mem-
ber. 2 a
The group listed the following dates
for the promotion of the products named
below:
Sept. 1-10 Pork
Sept. 22-Oct. 1 Beef, Lamb
Oct. 13-22 Pork
Dec. 1-10 Beef
Jan. 12-21 Lamb
Jan. 26-Feb. 4 Pork
gram against Brucellosis, T. B. and Scra-
pie in sheep.
Last year our Veterinary Division
spent more on tuberculosis than on Bru-
eellosis but this year we expect to re-
verse the situation since the T. B. situ-
ation has improved and we want to in-
crease our efforts to rid-the state of Bru-
cellosis. .
-LIVEST OCK TESTS
Most of the money spent by our
Veterinary Division went for costs of
testing animals for diseases, milk tests
laboratory evaluation of these tests and
for livestock sales barns inspections. A
small amount went for Indemnity, that is,
payment to owners of diseased livestock
slaughtered under our sanction,
- Indemnity was a major expense under

Atlantans Must Request
Bulletin Affer This Issue
Effective with the first issue in Sep-
tember, (Sept. 7), all circulation of the
Market Bulletin having Atlanta addres-
ses will be stopped. Subscribers wishing
to continue receiving the Bulletin after
that date should request it immediately
by mail or telephone.
This action has been made necessary
due to re-zoning of Atlanta by the Post
Office Department, which would result
in excessive costs to the State Depart-
ment of Agriculture if the Bulletins en-
ed.
Atlanta route and city subscribers
may continue their subscriptions by phon-_
ing WAlnut 3561 or by writing: Market
Bulletin, Dept. of Agriculture, State Cap-
itol, Atlanta.

ease program last year, The Federal plan
called for payment of up to $50 per head
for diseased purebred animals and $25
per head for diseased grade animals that
were slaughtered. The other major cost
cf the Federal Program was for fees to
veterinarians who made disease tests of
- animals.
Tt has been estimated that Brucellosis
alone costs the nations livestock industry
65 million dollars a year. There is no
way of knowing how much its human
form, Undulant Fever, costs us.
Our Federal-State livestock disease
program will work. It IS working. Bru-
cellosis infection in the U.S. in 1934 was
about 10 per cent. In 1953 it was down
to 3% per cent.
With sufficient funds and the cooper-
ation of livestock owners we may well
reach our goal of A Brucellosis-Free

A common complaint is that
broomsedge, ticklegrass, and
other weeds, are taking our pas-
tures. Broomsedge and tickle-
grass have come into prominence,
' because the cows refuse to eat
them. That refusal has been the
cows way of telling us that such
_ plants do not deliver enough feed
value for the trouble of eating it.
Experience shows that these
weeds. come in when the higher
level of soil fertility required for
~more nutritious feed plants has
gone out. Rebuilding and reseed-
- ing to desirable grasses and le-
Sumes is the answer.
When Professor J. W. Sanborn, !
of Missouri, planned the San-|-
born Field, he included two plots
of continuous timothy. One has
been given six tons of barnyard |
manure annually, the other no
treatment. The manured plot has
always been a fine timothy sward
with early spring and Jate fall
growths, and a quality hay crop.
The one with no treatment has
been getting so foul as to require
renovating eyery five or six
years.
Fertilize the soil so it will grow
nutritious grasses and these trou-}
blesome plants of no feed value
