~ Accident Rate High
Among Farm Children
By G. I. Johnson
Agricultural &xtension Service Engineer
Usually we think of safety as it con-
cerns roads and highways, and perhaps
this is the first place everyone should
think of- as requiring: alertness and es-
| pecial care.
Within ae last 10 on the faniber
ef farm trucks in Georgia has doubled
and there are nearly 80,000 farm trucks
in the state at present. Georgia farmers
operate about 100,000 automobiles and
more than 90,000 traetors.
Improper lighting, faulty taillights
and reflectors or maybe none at all, ac-
count for about 40 per cent of the vehicle
defects recorded against tractors. Front
and rear lights are now standard equip-
ment on new farm tractors, but there.
This article was prepared in cooperation with
National Fanm Safety Week (July 24-31). Reading
the safety suggestions outlined in this article, and
following them, may mean that some Georgia
farmer will be alive instead of dead when Farm
Safety Week is observed next year. It Could Be

are still approximately 37,000,000 pieces
of unlighted farm equipment on Ameri-
_ can farms and roads today.
WORST TIME
Much of this unlighted equipment is
not usually on the highway at night, but
often is around dusk. According to high-
way safety engineers, dusk is one of the
very worst times for accidents.
Automobile and truck headlights are
not always effective around sundown,
and it is sometimes hard to see such
objects as tractors, wagons, etc. on the
road at dusk, Tractor accidents on the
highway reach their peak between six
and eight o'clock p. m.
Some states require proper lighting
cf all vehicles operated or towed on pub-
lic roads at night. Many communities
and organizations have sponsored safety
campaigns urging use of reflector tape
(like Scotchlite). When applied to the
rear of farm equipment reflector tape

Mastitis Can Cause Trouble
-Uniy. Veterinarian Warns
(From School of Veterinary Medicine,
_ University of Georgia)
One of the most frequent and most
serious cow troubles we have to treat is
mastitis. I wish we might find a way to
teach farmers how serious this condition
can be. A cow with a swollen quarter or
thick milk should be treated without
_ delay. Three or four days later the quart-
er may be lost or destroyed. Even the
life of the cow may be in danger. After
the quarter is swollen, thickened and hot,
saving the quarter may be impossible.
If teat tube antibiotic drugs are used,
be sure the teat is thoroughly cleaned
and then disinfected with alcohol before
infusion of the quarter. It can make the
condition worse if some infection or cow
manure is pushed into the teat canal with
the end of the tube.
Many people are having. good results
with teat tube treatments, but it would
oe much more successful, if before treat-
ment is started a clean sterile sample of
milk is brought to the laboratory for di-
agnosis of the infection. Mastitis has so
many causes that special treatment with
the right antibiotic would be more apt
to result in a cure.
Dont gamble. Mastitis is a serious
disease. Some infections are virulent
enough to even kill pigs, when the dis-
carded milk is fed to them. 5

reflects the beams of headlights on vehi-
cles approaching from the rear and is a
preat safety boon in the absence of a
taillight. :
ONE-EYED VEHICLES
Many older model tractors are equip- -
ped with spotlights on the rear for use in
night plowing or similar work. However,
when these lights are shining on a tractor
that is moving down a highway it makes
the tractor look, to someone coming up
from the rear, like a one-eyed vehicle
approaching on the wrong side of the
road. This is very confusing to drivers of
other vehicles and can cause fatal acci-
dents.
We recommend that these improperly
lighted tractors be equipped with ade-

the tractor driver is the one most likely

HIGHEST AMONG CHILDREN
Among age groups, tractor accident
rates are highest among children 1 to 4,
and youngsters 15 to 19. Victims under
10 years old are usually children playing
around tractors or playfully hitching a
ride. In every accident case involving
these younger children parents should be
held entirely to blame. Childen under 10
should not be allowed close to moving
tractors, much less on them. It would be
a good idea not to even allow them to
play around such dangerous equipment
moving or still.
About one-third of all tractor acci-
dents involve youngsters under 20. |
