Judge Wm. A. Ingram Speaks

The following letter from Judge
William A.
Georgia, known to thousands of peo-
ple all over Georgia, is self-explan-
atory and expresses a highly valuable
opinion to which | think the people

of Georgia are entitled; therefore, |

am reproducing it herewith:

Hon. Tom Linder
* Atlanta, Georgia

_ Dear Mr. Linder:

As you kage ihe Supreme
Court of the United States has
held that it is unconstitutional
for a State to segregate school
children by Law on the basis of
race and color only. Because of
this decision, it is imperative that
a plan be worked out for the
State of Georgia to meet the
"emergency created by this deci-
sion.

_ This is true for the reason
that our State Laws and methods
of handling the segregation of
the races in our schools at the
present time violate the princi-
_-ples announced in this decision
of the Supreme Court.

Yours is the only practical
plan which will surely preserve
the segregation of the races in
our public schools within our un-
questioned constitutional rights;
and, at the same time, preserve
our free public school system
without .interruption. :

The do-nothing or wait-and-

| see policy of all the other candi-

Ingram of Cartersville,

dates will Sertdiely result in liti-

_ gationthe effect of which can-

not be foretold. Certainly it will
result in the disruption ct some

or all of our schools. This is so

for the reason that every lawyer
who desires to do so can finda =
client somewhere to use-in bring-

ing litigation against the school
authorities.

In order that the people may
know some of the damage that
would be done in the event that
the people should permit their

- free public school system to be

abolished in tavor of private
schools, | recommend that you
point out to the people of the
State the following:

If our public school system Is
lost, there are many, many dan-
gers to a private school plan.
Space permits me to point out
only 13 major dangers.

1. Gives to private individuals
hundreds of millions of dollars
worth of school building, equip-
ment and property that has been
paid for and will be paid for by
the taxpayers of Georgia.

2. Opens the door for the
teaching of Communism.

3. Abolishes public school bus
transportation system.

4. Abolishes all teachers jobs
white and colored.

5. Abolishes all teaching cer

lam a Christian. The men

_who founded this country found-

ed it on religious principles. They

were real men. They were not
Communists, nor weaklings. They
did not try to change their re-

Further explaining his _posi-

it is a sin for any Christian par-

so as to inculcate in that off-

to rid Georgia of the

yodings for future years.

rsonally | was fully de-
nined to retire from the Of-
f Commissioner of Agri-
whether | had offered
other office or not, be-
I have seen the liquor
ket progressively increase

ssed in 1938; and, | was
mined either to get out

lars of liquor racket money,
both from within the State and
from without the State.

| was also determined that
the people of the State should
have an opportunity to vote
for the preservation of their
free public school system and
for segregation at the same
time. No other plan has been

proposed which even purports

to do this. Every lawyer knows
that a private school system
would mean that each parent
would have to pay their own
expenses for their children. if
they got any education. Every
lawyer knows that to under-
take to subsidize children in
private schools would ultimate-
ly lead to the breaking down
of segregation in schools. Every
lawyer knows that there is no
way to continue our public
school system in the face of
the Supreme Court Decision
except to adopt an entirely
new system of laws.

| am convinced from going
over the State and coming in
contact with many thousands
of people that Georgia folks,
down in their heart, knew this;
but, the pressure put upon
them, the inducements offered

them and the false rumors of

every kind, proved too much
for many of them to resist.

| thank God for the years of
public service | have been per-
mitted to perform. With such
ability as | have and with such
courage as has been given me,
| have always sought the best
interest of the people of Geor-
gia and have never allowed
myself to be intimidated from
what | conceived to be my du-
ty by any man or any set of
men and | thank God for that.

| have no malice or ill will
toward any human being. |
pray for everyone, including
the liquor racketeers; and,
pray that some way may be
found to brighten the path of
Georgia in the years ahead
which now look so dark and

foreboding, not because | was

not elected Governor no in-
dividual man is of great im-
port but because the liquor
racket crowd and the enemies
of the white people of Georgia
are now in the saddle.

Again | thank God for each
and every one of my loyal
friends and true Georgians who
stood so faithfully in these try-
ing days.
