health and wealth and long life if

capitis

We are told in the Bible about Na-
boths devotion to the land which his
fathers had owned and which he had in-
herited from them.

We are told how he gave his life
rather than surrender that family heri-

tage to a wicked King and Queen.

In many passages of Scripture, we

read of Gods promises to transfer the

ownership of all kinds of property from
people who disobeyed Him and to give
this property to people who woe hear

- His voice,

It is therefore amazing when we-hear
modern writers and commentators speak
of the profit motive and capitalism as
though it was something new and when
we hear them speak of it as though it

- was something wicked and wrong.

PROFIT IS THE STIMULANT
TO ACTION

When the farmer goes out and plows
the land, plants his seed and cultivates
his crops,-it is the profit motive which
leads him, .

When a miller builds a dam across
a stream, erects a building and puts in
the grind rocks, it is the profit motive
which spurs him to the heavy task.

When the financier builds a sky-
scraper, a railroad or an: ocean liner, it
is the profit motive which leads him to
risk his capital or money in such a ven-
ture.

When the cotton mill worker rouses

himself at the call of the whistle in the

morning, his motive is in his pay en-
velope at the end of the week. The same

NOTICE!

We are leaving out the Hog and Caitle
sale prices on the various markets this
week.

weeks,

the desire for higher wages through col-

it and the capital from those who have

is- true vith the steel worker, with the
miner; with the merchant sailor and
with the employees of industry of every .
kind.

When industrial workers band them- :
selves together in labor unions, it is the
profit motive which moves them. It is

lective bargaining that motivates the
union and gives interest to its members,

THE PROFIT MOTIVE IS GOOD BUT :
IT CAN BE PERVERTED =

When the highwaymen and pickpock-
ets go-out to ply their trade, it is the
profit motive which leads them on. In
this case, they have simply perverted a
good stimulant to a bad cause.

When manufacturers and capitalists.
combine and form monopolies in restraint
of trade, this is another case of perver-
sion of their natural instinct to make a
profit.

In the last two cases, these men, in-
stead of creating new wealth and ren-_
dering an honest service, were simply
seeking -to take the profit or capital-that _
by- right belongs to others. ;

It is not the desire of the highway-
men and the pickpockets to obtain capi-
tal or a profit that is wrong. Neither
is it the desire of the manufacturer or
capitalist to make a profit that is wrong.

The evil comes from the fact that
they seek dishonestly to come into pos-
session to that which they had not right-
fully earned. They seek to take the prof |

earned it and to deprive the honest earn-
ers of the wages of their effort.

SELF DECEPTION

Those who say they are opposed-te
the profit motive and te capitalism are
not honest with themselves. They really
mean that they. would take the profit
and capital from others and divide it for
their own benefit.

They are just as much in favor of
profit and capital as anyone else. =

Only they would change the profit

* . SLAVERY

There is but one substitute for the
profit motive in human relations. That
substitute is slavery.

Hiven a slave has a profit motive to
the extent of saving his life and having
food to eat but slaves come nearer being
without a profit motive than anyone else
on earth.

The Christian looks for profit in an-
other life. The Christian looks forward
- to the resurrection and his reward is
incorruptible capital after death, for his
self-denial, charity and endurance of per-
secution in this world.

Remove the profit motive and you
have severed connection with the power

Without the hope of reward of some
kind, somewhere, sometime, the human

race would be as useless and as worth-.

less as the barnacles on a ship at the
end of its voyage.

Under the Agricultural age:
Act and under the laws creating the Of-
fice of Price Administration, the Com-
modity Credit Corporation and other
federal agencies, the farmer is brought
under complete bureaucratic control.

The Secretary of Agriculture of the
United States fixes what he calls parity
price for farm products. The so-called
parity prices are_so low-on many crops
that it is impossible for the farmer to
make a profit.

The Commodity Credit Corporation
has fixed differentials between grades
on cotton so wide that it is impossible
for the farmer to get anything like the
price which the Secretary of Agricul-
