mammoth market at Wash-
ny urpose, during the next four
he danger of a glutted market
more, and othen great consuming centers.
By reason of the relative short heal
from Georgia to Washington as compared
with Florida, the Rio Grande Valley and
California, there is no reason why Geor-
gia products should not always bring
higher returns to farmers with less loss
in transit and handling to the middle
man.
In the City of Washington alone, there
are many times ten thousand Georgians,
Alabamians, Floridians, Carolinians, and
people from Tennessee, who will be glad
to know that in the outskirts of Washing-
ton there is a place where they can al-
ways go and buy fresh Georgia products,
milk, eggs, vegetables and fruits and also
delicious Georgia sweet potatoes, Geor-
gia cane syrup, Georgia water ground
eorn meal, Georgia poultry, Georgia pe-
cans, Georgia hams, Georgia sausage and
all the many delicacies that make the
mouth water for which Georgia i is famous.
Existing Georgia markets need im-
provement and the development of facili-
ties for handling and marketing products
-such as eggs, poultry, milk, grains and
hay. Georgia farmers marketing sy-
stem, since its inception in 1935 under
what appeared to be insurmountable dif-
ficulties and handicaps, has become the
talk of market men of the nation, and
yet, we have only scratched the surface of
unlimited possibilities.
The further development and in-
creased efficiency of - farmers markets,
with beneficial results to farmers and
consumers alike, must also be matched
with increased financial support for the
College of Agriculture, the Experiment
Stations, the Extension Forces, Vocation-
al Agricultural Forces, Soil Conservation,
Forestry, and all those agencies which are
engaged in building and preserving soils,
products from those: soils, the develop-
ment of better crops and livestoek and
the making of better living conditions on
the farm. S
The people of Georgia are deeply in-
terested and have shown their willing-"
ness to support education for their chil-
dren, more and better roads, better health
programs, better treatment of inmates
of eleemosynary institutions and better
care of those whom misfortune has
caused to be dependent on the generosity
-of the public for aid. In their zeal to
a
fields is of tremendous
acquire all these good things, we hae
/ somewhat overlooked the fact that the ;
development of our agriculture and our |
industry is the first requisite for the con- ee
tinued maintenance, enlargement and ee
development of these good things which :
we all desire. It should, therefore, be the
purpose of us all, during the next four
yeers to bring about such an improve | .
ment in our basic eeonomy as to make
possible further advance of the great
progress already made by the people of
Georgia during the last two decades,
Marketing plans for the future must
also take into account the development
of terminal facilities water, rail and ~
truck so as to make Georgia a desirable
warehousing and distributing center for
all the area of the southeast quadrant of
tne United States. With the great de-
velopment of diversified agriculture in all
lines and the great development of in-
dustry, mining, etc. and with our great
potential development of natural re-
sources of ores and minerals, there is no
reason why the industry, warehousing
and merchandising of products of all
kinds in Georgia should not combine
Kansas City, Memphis, New Orleans,
Richmond and Atlanta within the boun-
daries of this great state.
Georgias natural wealth in the geo-
logical field has remained almost intact.
Financial support for our Department of
Geology and Mining has never been such
as to enable the exploration of our un- _
told wealth in that field. The next four . :
years should bring about discovery and a
development of these resources to the
extent of producing a new income run-
ning into hundreds of millions of dollars.
Agriculture in recent years has been
beset with highly destructive and tre-
nendously expensive insect pests and |
plant diseases. The work of our experi- !
mental and research men in these fields,
as well as the work of our Department of |
Entomology in.the control of these insect
pests and fungi, has been limited because
of the lack of sufficient funds to-carry on
the work adequately. The work in these
importance to
every man, woman and child in the state
and must be adequately provided for.
