equally clear that the law of supply and

demand cannot determine the price of
labor.

TRANSPORTATION,
COMMUNICATIONS, ETC.

In the case of transportation com-
panies, telephone and telegraph compan-
ies, power companies and other utilities,
the law of supply and demand is without
effect because the supply is under ab-

solute control, and in the nature of things, -

is monopolistic in character. Federal
and state governments have recognized

this fact and have created bodies such as

Interstate Commerce Commission, Fed-

eral Communications Commission, and -

Federal Trade Commission, having broad
powers of control to regulate both the sup-

ply and the price to be charged the pub-

lic. Most states also have commissions
charged by law with the regulation of
rates, locations, and limitations or prohi-
bition of competitive-like enterprise.

AGRICULTURE

: In the field of agriculture both the
_supply and demand are largely controlled

by Federal laws.

International. commerce, reciprocal
trade agreements, etc., provide means
and methods of bringing in billions of dol-
lars of agricultural products from other
countries. These offtimes create surplus
in America, when the American farmer
has not produced a surplus. In order to

- sustain farm prices in the face of these

imports, congress has enacted laws pro-

viding commodity credit loans, price sup-

orts, government purchases, school
unch programs, acreage control, etc. Re-

gently, hundreds of millions of pounds of

meat, dairy products and other farm com-

3 mitts have been imported into this

gountry in the face of ample seppies of
domestic production.

So long as these papers are continu-
ed the farmer has no control over the sup-
ply of agricultural products. They are
under control of the Federal government.

In fact, the farmer has no control
over prices that he pays and therefore has
little eontrol over the cost of producing
his crops. The farmer has no control
over the price of what he sells; therefore
has little control over his income.

in the local newspaper advocating that

the price of the farmers milk be fixed by,
the supply and demand. But strange te
say the same newspaper formed a monop=
oly in the local newspaper field to escape
the law of supply and demand in its own
business. It was not willing to compete
in the sale of advertising space. It was
not willing to compete in the editorial
field. It was not willing to compete in
selling subscriptions. It was not iaw ot :
in any way to operate under the law of

FREE ENTERPRISE

We hear a lot of talk about free enters
prise. The advocates of free enterprise -
offtimes erroneously connect free enter=_
prise and the law of supply and demand
as though they were one and the same.
There is no such thing as free enterprise, |
in its broadest sense, in any nation with a
controlled or partially controlled econe-
my. With the great combinations of caps
ital, both national and international, the
working manbe he farmer, industriak
worker, transportation or communica-
tions employee, or whatever he may be.
would have no chance if he were left to
fight his own battle as an individual, On
the other hand, we see evidences every=
day of the hopeless fight of small indes

in a world of big business. with unlimited
capitaland credit, and with huge organi-
zations.

_ Under existing conditions, the little
man in this big country is like the little
fish in the lake. His free enterprise con-
sists largely in his freedom to be swal-
lowed by the bigger fish.

_ To talk about the law of supply and
demand controlling in this country now
is about on a par with talking about the ~

In one case the law of
gravity is under control and therefore
ceases to operate. In the other case the
law of supply and demand is under con-
trol and therefore ceases to operate.

is built on a rock.

With public and private debts now
approaching one trillion dollars, .and alt
of them based on cheap money and high.

employment, it is impossible for this coun- {
try to return in the foreseeable future 4
to the law of supply and demand without (
an economic and political revolution, the
end result of which no man can foresee.
