regiment. He was discharged at Lauder-
dale, Miss., July 16th, 1862. He saw
about four months of active duty.
On being discharged from the army
he went back to Kingston, there to as-
sume his duties at the Wayside Home.
_ Doc Tippin met all the trains com-
ing into Kingstonnight or dayand
. saw that wounded and sick Confederate
soldiers were made comfortabie, or that
they received treatment.
Because of this exposurehe con-
tracted pneumoniafrom. which. he died
in May of 1863.
Doc Tippin gave his life for the Con-
federacyas much as that of any man
who served in the Confederate Army.
He was a gallant heroa fine Chris- .
tian gentlemanand a great humani-
tarian. He gave freely of his time for the
lost but just cause of the Confederacy.
He slept in an unmarked grave for 88
yearsuntil Miss Leila Darden, of Kings-
ton, procured a marker for his grave.
While at the Wayside HomeDoc
Tippin recorded the names of all the
Confederates entering the hospitalto-
gether with addresses, rank and company
and regiment. He wrote to the parents

The Daughters of the Confederacy in-
vited me, as Georgia State Commande |
of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, ia
make the dedicatory speech. It was an
occasion which inspired the thoughts |
back to the men and women of the War
Between the States. The people of the
Confederacy were the cream of Ameri-
can citizenship. They were willing to
give their all for the preservation of the |
American Constitution and the rights of |
the individual sovereign states. Finaliy
overcome by unlimited forces, they con-
tinued to carry on under circumstances
which would have crushed any people of
less heroic strain.
The fact that this Confederate hero- 3
was burfed in an unmarked grave is
mute testimony to the poverty in which
the peonle of the South was leit after
Appomattox.
Doc Tippin was an outstanding ex- ee
ample of the courage and stamina of the
people of the South of that day, of which
it has been eloquently said: No Nation

INFORMATION ON STAR GEORGIA
PLANTER OF 1951WILFORD TYLER
- OF DONALSONVILLE
Wilford Tyler, 21-year-old son of Mr.
and Mrs. P. H. Tyler of Donalsonville,
began his FFA work with one steer and
one purebred Duroc gilt, and today he
has 134 Durocs, 36 of which are pure-
bred. and half interest in 13 head of cat-
-tleone a purebred Hereford.
With money saved from the sale of
,
steers and hogs, Wilford purchased 85
acres of land from his father. In addition __
to this 85 acres, he is farming his fathers
115-acre farm, and together they have 45
acres in peanuts, 12 in cotton, 60 acres
in corn, and 11 acres in permanent and
temporary pasture. Over half of these
crops are on Wilfords farm. Wilford
has learned that it pays to have a com-
bination of row crops and livestock.
Wilford has one of the nicest set-ups
for hog production that can be found, |
even on the farms of adults, with regu- i
lar farrowing houses where he can placa
an electric bulb and give the right kind
of protection to take care of young pigs.
A firm believer in keeping his breeding
hogs up, he grazes them on oals and
crimson clover during the winter months
