The fundamental purpose of this sys-
tem of State owned Farmers Markets is
to provide a convenient, dependable out-
let through which farmers may market
their products at the lowest marketing
cost and receive the best obtainable price
in cash for them at the time of sale..
Georgia State Farmers Markets are
built to fit the particular need of a pro-
ducing section. Various operation meth-
ods are employed. On some markets,
auction blocks are built and all products
that come on the market are sold on the
auction. On others the producer does his
own selling and deals direct with the
buyer. Not all markets are in operation
12 months in the year as some are located
where only seasonable crops are grown.
The marketing facilities are made avail-
able at the time of the year and continue
in operation as long as crop volume in the
area warrants. All State Markets are set
up for the purpose of helping the pro-
ducer obtain the highest dollar for the
crop he grows by bringing the grower and
the consumer nearer together.
The real worth of these markets cannot
be measured by performance alone. If
it could be determined how much the
agricultural progress of the State would
have been retarded, or how much less
the growers would have received for their
products, or how much more it would
have cost them to market their crops had
it not been for these markets, then we
would know and appreciate their real
worth,

Commissioner of Agriculture

Editoral By TOM L By TOM LINDER
The farmers of America are asked to
inerease their 1952 production over that
of 1951 and particularly in the produc-
tion of food, feed and grain crops.
_In the case of corn acreage, an increase
of 6% is requested on a National average
and 9% in Georgia, with corresponding
increases in other feed and grain. crops.
If the increase is realized it will be more
than has ever been produced before by
American farmers.
The unsettled conditions of a wat-
fextencd world accounts for much of
the immediate pressure. But even with-
out the emergency, our needs still con-
tinue to increase. It is estimated that
with an increased population of better
than 2-million annually that by 1975,
barring a disaster like this country has
never known, there will be five people
gotte table where there are only four
Twenty-five years ago, there were
iy: 000,000 people in the United
s and today approximately 154,000,-
erefore, at the present rate twen-
ULTURE
ty-five years from now, there will be
approximately 200,000,000 people in the
United States, which roughly speaking
will be like adding 92 more cities the
present size of. New Orleans, Louisiana.
The production of food and fiber need-
ed by these increasing numbers must
come from approximately the same acre-
age that is in cultivation, pastures or in
ranches that we have today. There will,
of course, be some reclaimed land and
through our soil conservation program
some acreage will be put back into cul-
tivation or into pastures or put into pro-
duction of forest products that is waste
land today. Therefore, how well we and
future generations eat in the years to
come depends primarily on how effective-
ly we conserve and use the land and wa-
ter resources -that are now ayailable.
There are no new. frontiers and the old
saying, Go West young man has lost
its appeal. On the other hand, our farm
population is declining at a rapid rate.
Dr. Jonathan Foreman of Columbus,
Ohio, in addressing the annual meeting
of the National Association of Soil Con-
servation District Supervisors, Oklahom
City, Oklahoma, February 1951, callea
OR 1952
attention to the fact that 75 years ago
80 farmers provided food and raiment
for 100 people. Today 17 people produce
the food and raiment requirements for
100 people, meaning that 83 out of every
100 people in the United States live in
towns and cities. He prophesied that
in the years to come, it will only require
five people to produce the food and rai-
ment requirements on the farms for
themselves and 95 other people.
In our own State of Georgia, Agricul-
tural Extension Economists show that
our farm population in 1924 was 1,556,-
000, in 1944, 1,095,000 and in 1950, ap-
proximately 1,000,000. The BAE Report
shows that the total value of all crops
produced in Georgia in 1951 was $475,-
275,000.00, or an increase of $76,000,-
000.00 over 1950.
According to acreage in production
given by Mr. D. L. Floyd, Agricultural
Statistician, supplemented by planted
acreage given by Mr. T. R. Breedlove, of
the major crops, it appears that Georgie
farmers planted 7,441,000 acres in 1951
' This does not include cover crops that

er-producer received on the aver-

of the retail price. His share here
was larger because of lower trans-

Much progress has been made in
recent years in cleaning, handling,
distributing and marketing field
seeds. Because of better cleaning
machinery, improved methods of
distribution, more efficient and less
wasteful methods of marketing,
packaging, labeling, etc., less of the
consumers, dollar. goes to these
services, more to the producer.
This efficiency and economy of
handling, processing and distribut-
ing Americas field seed crops make
available to the consuming farmer

One of the disinfectants much
used for treating grass and legume
seeds is Arasan, of which two
forms are available. Arasan is
for dry application only, and it may
be applied in dust treaters at the
rate of 8 ounces per 100 pounds of
seed. Arasan SF is for either dry
or slurry application. When it is
used in a slurry treater, mix 3
pounds of powder to 1 gallon of wa-
ter for a 10-pound dump of seed.
It can be used dry in batch mixers
or blenders. One 3-pound bag treats
900 pounds of seed.

A committee representing the various
Agricultural Agencies of Georgia spent.
considerable- time during the winter -
months in trying to arrive at the proposed
acreage goals of the major crops for
1952. The goals that they have recom-
mended are as follows: Corn an increase
of 9%, sorghums, excluding syrup, 5%,
Soy beans for beans 19%, Irish po-
tatoes 7%, Sweet potatoes 66%, oats
4%, barley 40%, Wheat 76%, hay 1%,
and a decrease in cotton acreage of ap-
proximate'y 8%. This is an increase of
approxima oly 305,500 acres for the crops
listed above, including rye of which no
increase was recommended. |
Beginning with January 8, and run-
ning through the 16th, six Production
Goal Meetings were held in Georgia un-
der the direction of Mr. T: R.-Breedlove,
Chairman, St2te Agricultural Mobiliza-

other agencies interested in agriculture.
County Agents and other Extension
workers, PMA District and County work-
ers, Vocational Teachers, Veteran Teach-
ers, Soil Conservation Representatives,
Forestry Representatives and others were
invited to attend these conferences. The
attendance ranged from. 200 to 350 at ~
each meeting, at which time the overall
agricultural program was presented, pro-
duction of previous years and the po-
tential need and acreage goals for 1952.
I personally could not attend the meet-
ings because of other pressing problems,
but Lhad a representative at each to show
the interest of the State Department of
Agriculture in this overall agricultural
program for 1952, ~
It is obvious to all of us that with our
growing livestock industry, we need more
grain and feed stuff in Georgia as we
cannot buy feed produced in other aras
and compete- successfully with producers
in the areas where the feed is grown.
Then too, Georgia is a rapidly growing
ing essed an. Coe thus pro
additional market outlets for ur
products. :
