the heroic endurance and deeds of a
people, the equal of whom has not, yet
appeared on this earth.
No Nation rose so bright and fair
or fell so pure of crime.

From the prospective of 1951, the
events leading up to the War Between
the States as well as the events during
its course can be much more accurately
surveyed than was possible at the time of
these events.

When we pledge allegiance to the flag,
we say:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the
United States of America and to the re-

public for which it stands one Nation in-
divisible with liberty and justice for all.

This Nation was instituted as a repub-
lic, the protection of each individual
State in all its sovereign rights was the
fundamental principle on which the sol-
emn compact was entered by the thirteen
original States.

When the Confederate States could no
longer tolerate the Union to which they
were bound, they undertook to separate
themselves and to form a Nation of the
South.

The States of the Confederacy were
comparable to South Korea today. The
Confederates desired to be free of the
Northern States just as South Korea has
desired to be free from North Korea.

From 1861 to 1865, hundreds of thou-
sands of men from the Northern States
shed their blood on the battle fields to
force the Southern States to remain in
the Union. Today, thousands of Ameri-
eans from both the North and the South
are giving their lives on the battle fields
of Korea to maintain the rights of South
Korea to be independent of North Korea.
Soldiers from the South are fighting for
the same principle in 1951 for which
they fought from 1861 toJ65. Men from
the Northern States have acknowledged
that the men of the South were right and
they have joined in this fight in Korea
to uphold the principle that the people
of one section shall not have the will of
another section imposed upon them by
force. :

The great changes which occur over

long periods of time show how the com:
mon-people are forced into wars to do tha
fighting and the dying, believing that they
are fighting for the right wher most of
the time they are simply carrying out
the selfish desires and interest of a small
group of men who happen to be in posi-
tion to direct events according to their
own interest.

A cause that is right does not die be-
cause it is temporarily crushed by supe-
rior force. The people of the South have
maintained their liberty for eighty-six
years in spite of the fact that they were
crushed at Appomattox, and this is be-
cause they never ceased to cherish their
rights and freedom and above all because
they never ceased to trust in God to pro-
tect them and their states from the great
evils which had so sorely beset them
during the war and during the recon-
struction era.

It is a matter of historic record that
Nations and Empires travel a well mark-
ed cycle. The lessons of history show us
that men cannot be trusted with, too

much authority. When they are, they
use it to ovvress their fellow man.

The lessons of history teach us that
great Netions arise from human __ stock
thet is close to the soil. In its initial
stages it produces great statesmen and
great leaders. As it progresses in the at-
tainment of power and of wealth, for
some unnown reason, man of less and
less statue fall heir to possessions of pow-
er and these men of less statue always
use power for purposes of oppression.

The Reunion at Norfolk will bring to
an end the meeting of men who wore the
grey. The last rebel yell in this world
will have been he2rd. The last man will
march with a genuine Confederate Flag
in his hons with the bullet holes which
are the last visible testimony. of the fierce
battles threii*h which the Confederates
-went and the flag which represented
principes which they held dearer than
their own lives. ,

THE BLUE AND THE GRAY

By the flow o1 ise inland river,
Whence the fleets of iron have fled,
Where the bicdes of the grave-grass quiver,
Asleep are the ranks of the dead;
Under the sod and the dew,
Waiting the judgement day;
Under the one, the Blue;
Under the other. the Gray.

These in the robings of glory, *
Those in the gloom of defeat;
All with the battle-blood gory,
In the dusk of eternity meet;
Under the sod and the dew,
Waiting the judgment day;
Under the laurel, the Blue;
Under the willow, the Gray.

From the silence of sorrowful hours.
The desolate mourners go,
Lovingly laden with. flowers,
Alike for the friend and the foe;
Under the sod and the dew.
_ Waiting the judgment day;
Under the roses, the Blue;
Under the lilies, the Gray.

So with an equal splendor,
The morning sun-rays fall,
With a touch impartially tender,
On the hlossoms blooming for all;

Under the sod aud tne ucw,
Waiting the judgment day;

Broidered with gold, the Blue;
Mellowed with gold, the Gray.

So when the summer calleth, ~
On forest and field of grain,
With an equal murmur falleth
The cooling drops of the rain;
Under the sod and the dew, :
Waiting the judgment day;
Wet with the rain. the Blue;
Wet with the rain, the Gray.

Sadly, but not with upbraiding,
The generous deed was done;

In the storm of the years that are fading.

No braver battle was won;
Under the sod and the dew,
Waiting the judgment day;

Under the blossoms, the Blue;

Under the garlands, the Gray.

No more shall the war-cry sever: _
Or the winding rivers be red;

They banish our anger forever,
When they laurel the graves of our dead;

Under the sod and the dew,

Waiting the judgment day;

Love and tears for the Blue;
Tears and love for the Gray.
J. P. AUSTIN

THE SWORD OF ROBERT LEE
Forth from its scabbard pure and bright,

Flashed the sword of Lee!
Far in the front of the deadly fight

High oer the brave in the cause of Right
Its stainless sheen like a beacon light

Led us to Victory.

Out of its scabbard where full long
It slumbered peacefully.

Roused from its rest by the battles song
Shielding the feeble, smiting the strong
Guarding the right, avenging the wrong

Gleamed;the sword of Lee.

Forth its scabbard high in air
Beneath Virginias sky

VE. Bell, Duluth, Rt. 2. 5.

Forth irom its scabbard! all in
Bright flashed the sword

Tis shrouded now in its sheath
It sleeps the sleep of our

Defeated yet without a stain,

Proudly and peacefully.
