MARK
} set in thine inheritance,
Deuteronomy 19:14, et
which Capiain thomas has kindly fur-
nished me and which I think will be of
Ls ineese interest to all landowners: :
LASTING Paceeat SURVEYS.
Are you taking savaniage of the existence
of Federal survey monuments to perpetuate
_ the surveys of the location of the poundrieg of
your: property?
"The United States Coast and Geodetic Sur-
vey has thousands of these monuments which
have been Jocated in the triangulation net~
which extends over the United States. Al- ~
though these monuments were established
primarily as a basic framework for mapping
such as nautical and aeronautical charts and
_ topographic maps, for location of national and
state boundaries, and for large scale engineer-
_ ing and development projects; they are also
readily useable by local surveyors to place
their. surveys of private yoePny on a truly
permanent basis.
Ne
sree The act and Geodetic Survey mark tor
2 ~ monument) does not have to be on
es the principle of ge- 1
property
to be used in fixing its boundaries.
a mark within a reasonable distance of the
- property, any competent surveyor can make a
traverse tie (measured angles and distances)
between the a mark and the PEPER
survey.
The USC&GS marks are cus located at
higher points or near fence lines on private
property, highway or railroad rights-of-way,
_ city parks, etc., in positions most suitable for
national survey and mapping requirements.
The _standard marks of triangulation stations
- are bronze disks four inches in diameter set
in. conerete monuments, rock, pipe or per-
manent structures. A disk with a triangle in-
scribed in the center marks the station center.
There are usually two or more additional re-
ference mark disks which are set (usually _
within 100 feet of the center disk). Reference
mark disks are inscribed with an arrow point-
ing toward the station and are used to help
find and check the recovery of the station.
- Most stations established since -the middle
thirties also have an azimuth mark, which is
visible from the ground at the station and
about a quarter of a mile or more distant. This
mark is to enable local engineers to readily
obtain a true direction for starting their sur-
veys. The azimuth mark also has an arrow in-
scribed, All the above-mentioned bronze disks
have indentifying lettering imprinted-in the
disk. A different proper name (usually a local
name) is stamped on each disk along with the
year in which the marks were set. This stamp-
ed name and date should be used in any cor-
respondence about the mark.
For each USC&GS triangulation station
mark, there are published: (1) a description of
station which enables anyone to go to the
ty of the mark and to identify and check
e ry with certainty; (2) lists. of geogra-
itions which give the latitude, longi- _.

tude, and=plane coordinates of the mark-and
the distance and azimuths to other adjacent
triangulation stations. There are indexes avail-_
| able which show all existing USC&GS marks
in any locality. Information may -be obtained
by addressing the U.S. Coast and Geodetic
Survey Regional Office at 80 Marietta Street,
N.W., Atlanta, Georgia, or the Directar, US.
Coast and Geodetic Survey, Washington 25,
Diez .
The published plane coordinate positions
make the triangulation stations readily usua-
ble by the local surveyor using ordinary me-
thods of plane surveying. The plane coordinate _
positions have been mathematically convert-
ed from the geodetic positions which took into :
consideration the curved surface of the earth.
A plane coordinate system has been adopted
for various states and zones of states so that
local suryeys which are made using plane sur-
veying methods may all be fittedtogether into
the national network of horizontal control.
c
The main reason that it is so advantageous
to the property owner to have his property.
surveys tied in td a USC&GS triangulation
station is that connection to the national. net-
work of triangulation gives the location o
the property corners the added permanence
of the thousands of correlated triangulation |
stations which extend over the entire country.
Each triangulation station has a definite posi-
tion on the face of the earth. its geodetic lati-
tude and longitude are determined on the
adopted reference spheroid. In the case of the
Be
destruction of an original triangulation sta-
tion mark, or any other point defined by a
geographic engineer can re-establish its origi-
nal location by means of new triangulation
. connected .with other triangulation marks
which have not been destroyed. If the boun-
dary survey of a farm or other parcel of land
'is connected by direction and distance to tri- :
angulation of the Coast and Geodetic Survey,
there should be no difficulty in reproducing
the boundary in its true position within the
limits of accuracy of the surveying methods
employed on the boundary work.
XN
A brief description df the national triangu-
lation net may be of interest. The main scheme
of triangulation consists of marked points at
the vertices of arcs of connected observed tri-
angles which criss-cross the United States
from border to border and coast to coast. The
area between the main arcs is being filled in
with more closely spaced stations in order to
establish-a station in each 72-minute quad-
rangle and 4 to 5 miles apart along the main
roads. Measured base-lines and astronomical
observations are included in the network.
Triangulation observations are made with
direction theodolites,
usually at night on signal
Lengths of lines vary from a few miles to over
100 miles in length. In many areas of the coun-
try, triangulation surveys have been greatly
expedited by using Bilby steel towers to see
over trees and other obstructions. This is a
double tower formed by two demountable
portable steel tripods. The inner tripod sup-
ports the instrument independently, and. the
outer tripod supports the observing party,
tent, signal lamps and other gear. These tow-
-ers can be built in a -fw hours to heights of
-from 37 to 116 feet, and can be taken apart in
even less time, hauled by truck to the next
site, and re-erected hundreds of times.
