re are only two ways by which a

oadteds of years, wise men in-

- people. of the United States, and

ury of the United States with which to
pay off the paper dollar in circulation.

The trouble and danger of that kind
of money proved to be that some un-
scrupulous money changers could obtain
large quantites of the money and take it
out of circulation and thereby cause a

squeeze on all those who were in debt -

and on all those who had commodities
and labor for sale, ;

The only other method of having
sound money is to issue it against the
credit of the Government and the faith
of the people in that Government.

In a country like this, with ample nat-
ural resources and with intelligent ener-
getic citizens, money issued on the credit
and faith of the Government is sound so
Jong as the volume is limited to an
amount consistent with the ability of the
Government to pay. -

When the amount of money issued is
in excess of the good credit of the Gov-
ernment, the same thing happens to the
value of the money that happens to an
individuals note when the community
learns that the individual is heavily in-
volved in debt.

When a Government, or its authorized
agents, begins to issue money too freely,
the value of the money begins to decline

and people are willing to pay more money

for a bale of cotton, more money for

land, more money for houses and more

monev for cammodities of anv kind.

Under modern conditions, this willing-
ness to swap money for goods, demon-

strates itself largely through people be-.

ing willing to obligate themselves for
automobiles, household conveniences,
houses, clothing, etc. Merehants take
adventece of this willinoness of the veo-
ple to swan their money for goods. The
peovole buy on installment plans. The
neonle swan off the money which thev
have not vet earned in exchanse for
goods.

In other words, the danger of money
based on precious metals is a corner on
monev in the money market. The dan-
ger of money based on faith and credit is
the too free use of the printing press
which produces a bumper crov of green-
backs.

The same thing happens to a bumper
crop of moon barks that happens

tO) .a)
or a pe oe re

of any other commoditythat is the
price goes down.

Prior to 1933, panics in this country
were caused by corners of hard money.
Since 1933, panics are caused by infla-
tion of money, based on credits.

_ This decrease in the value of the dol-

- lar is the result of the Act of Congress in

taking us off the gold standard in 1933
and putting us on greenback money.

This is why people who work for sal-
aries are getting less and less all the
time in actual buying power even though
they receive substantial raise in the num-

ber of dollars they are paid per month.

This is why labor organizations find
that a raise in wages does not give the

- added buying power which they expected.

The decrease in the value of a dollar

is largely because of the unprecedented

amount necessary to operate the Govern-
ment and to provide defenses for the
country.

This is the reason why the farmer
finds that although he gets more dollars,
he is still hard put to make ends meet.

These things are proof of the eternal
truth of Gods pronouncement to Adam:

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat

bread, till thou return unto the ground;
for out of it wast thou taken; for dust
thou art, and unto dust shalt thou re-
turn. Genesis 3:19.

Thus, we see there is a higher law
which limits our standard of living to
the things which we produce.
not increase our standard of living by
increasing the volume of money, because
the total value of all the money cannot

be any more than the total value of the

things we produce. The more of things
we produce the more sweat we must give.

Now is the time to be temperate in
planning for the future. Plan to have
plenty of food on the farms. Do not de-
pend on having to buy it. Now is the
time to plan to have plenty of feed and
pastures for livestock. Now is the time
to plan to use our labor to the best possi-
ble advantage. Now is the time to plan
a temperate course of action and not get
excited by money. crops before we have
made provision for supplies for our own

use.
