compared with about 9 percent for the

country as a whole.
In order that the reader may fully un-

derstand that up-to-the-minute figures

are still more favorable to Georgia, I

| quote from an incomplete report of the

U. S. Department of Agriculture, Bureau
of Agricultural Economics, in a report of
April 27, 1950. Loe
Cash receipts in 1949 amounted to
8.4 billion dollars. 10 percent below the

record of 9.4 billion _ established last

Years oo 5s fui
The above figures are for the nation
while in Georgia the cash receipts from
the sale of livestock increased $4,464,000.
Georgia increased while the nation as a

whole was losing 10 percent.

According to the Crop Reporting Serv-
ice, Bureau of Agricultural Economics, .

USDA, dated February 20, 1950, the
number of cattle and calves on the farms
in Georgia as of January 1, 1950, were ll
per cent more than in 1949. According
to the same report, the number of cattle

and calves on the farms in the United

States increased only 3 percent during

the same period. The nation increased 3

percent while Georgia increased 11 per-

-cent.

The value of all cattle in Georgia in-

creased from $80.60 per head January 1,
1949, to $83.30 per head January 1, 1950.

Balance of nation, DECREASED from
$135.00 per head to $123.00 per head.

Agricultural Extension Service of Ws p:
Department of Agriculture, Bureau of
Agricultural Economics, dated April 11,
1950, as follows:

GEORGIA 1949 COMMERCIAL
BROILER PRODUCTION HIGHEST
IN HISTORY OF STATE

Georgia 1949 commercial broiler pro-
duction set an all time high record for
the State with a total of 45,574,000 birds
marketed during the year. This was the
third consecutive year that all previous
records have been surpassed. The 1949
figure was 38 per cent above the 33,025,-

59 per cent more than the 28,717,000 of

The development of pastures, pasture
grasses and cover crops has been record -
breaking. As an outstanding example,
the current production of Lespedeza seed
in Georgia is 189 percent above the 1938-
1947 average, and amounted to more than
19,000,000 pounds. The acreage planted
in Lespedeza increased from 26,000 in
1942 to 85,000 in 1949, and the yield per
acre in pounds increased from 210 in 1942
to 225 in 1949. The same story is rela-
tively true as to Blue Lupine, Crimson
and White clover, Fescue and_ other

_clovers and grasses, and there has been

a large increase in the production of seed
of other clovers and grasses. In South
Georgia the growing of Coastal Bermuda,
which was developed by the Coastal
Plain Experiment Station, is finding
