mature deliberation, came_

tion that would get them
as early as possible, we de-
ould be impossible to get the

cluding several hundred thousand farm
wage-hands and people employed in
processing farm. products. The total
number to be brought under Social Se-

curity, in addition to those already in-
a nals approximately eight million.

It is certain that the farmer cannot
continue to operate on an uncertain basis
and live in a National economy where
security is the watchword.

I note by news reports that for the first
three months of 1950, General Motors
showed a profit of two hundred and
twelve million dollars, the biggest on

record. According to the reports, these

profits were made on approximately

880,000 automobiles and trucks. This

would show a profit to General Motors
2OL more than $240.00 on each individual

car and truck put out by them during the

three month period. The reason that
big profit is because they were able to
oie their own minimum prices. The in-
dividual farmer cannot fix prices either
on what he buys or on what he sells.
Prices on what he buys is fixed by the
manufacttirers, while prices on what he
sells is fixed by whatever surplus there
: may be either domestically or imported.

There is no other economic group in
the United States who is forced to work
under this unsurmountable handicap. If
Geneval Motors has a large number of

trucks which are unsold, those unsold .

ears and trucks do not determine the

prices that are received for those that

are sold.

=

The Government fixes the price on a
postage stamp and if you use a postage
~The number
Ol stamps that are not used have nothing

to do with the price of the stamps that
are used.

The Government fixes the price on

the use- of the telephone. Those tele-
_ phones veg are not in Use have eens

General Motors was able to make this.

1 to make a

telephone call. The Government fixes
the price for hauling freight and if you
ship a commodity, you pay that price.

Box cars or trucks that are on the side-

track or in the garage and not in use

have nothing to do with the price LO 2
service of those that are in use. These

Gllustrations could be carried on indefi-

nitely. The point is that the farmer is
the only man who is penalized in price
because he works hard or has a good year
or because the Government permits im-
ports of Foreign competitive crops which

create a temporary surplus in the market. 2

WE HOPE THAT CONGRESSMEN |
WILL PICK UP THIS CHALLENGE

The Southern Commminathics 8 Agri:
culture believe that numbers of Senators

-and Congressmen will pick up this pla ane

of the Southern Commissioners for mini- _
mum. prices on farm products with a do-
mestic allotment in bushels, bales, and
We believe that all American
manufac-

pounds.
producers whether farmers,
turers, transporters or what not, are en-
titled to the American market for what

they produce. If American producers

have more than enough for the American

market and want to sell it in world mar-
kets for world prices, that should be their

privilege.

American producers in the American
market should not be required to com-
pete at world prices with imported sur-
pluses no matter from where they come.

Everyone is agreed that the corning
years will see world events making it im.
perative for America to be strong. Amert-
ca cannot be any stronger than its agri-
culture. The Southern Commissioners
believe that when the 82nd Congress
convenes in January, they will be atten-
tive to these facts and will give consid-
eration to the Southern Commissioners
plan for a domestic allotment and mini-
mum prices to farmers.

TOM LINDER,
Commissioner of Agriculture
