Legislature in 1949, amended the

-addition to the members of the Soil
servation Committe, appointed by

mbers in an advisory capacity, consist-
of Hon. Walter S. Brown, Director,

3. Soil conservation is of such tremendous
portance and Georgia is making such
ynderful strides in soil conservation,
at it seemed the right thing to do to get
2 National Association to hold its an-
al convention in Atlanta. This would
ing many people from all parts of the
to Atlanta.
Accordingly, on January 29, 1949, I re-
ived a letter from Mr. W. F. Hall, Presi-
nt, Georgia Association of Soil Conser-
on District Supervisors, Sparta, Geor-
follows:
S you probably know, our National
ciation has its annual convention in
r, Colorado, next month and we ex-
) have a delegation of some twen-
ive members in attendance.
always bring back valuable inform-
from these annual meetings for all
farmers of Georgia. It would be far
more beneficial if althe farmers them-
elves could attend or, at least, several
representatives from each conservation
district, but the expense involved makes
that impossible.
Tam anxious to have the 1950 National
Convention in Atlanta and, therefore, I
am seeking your assistance. It will. be of
untold aid to us in this drive for the con-
vention to have a letter from you invit-
ing the National Association to meet in
Atlanta. I sincerely hope that you can
furnish me with such a letter, so we can
jo to the convention well armed.
in response, I wrote Mr. Hall as follows,
a February 5, 1949:
~ With reference to inviting the Nation-
al Association of Soil Conservation Su-
Pervisors to Atlanta in 1950. I will do ev-
erything possible to help you. It seems
the proper procedure would be to write
a strong letter to the President. Secret-
ary and probably the Executive Commit-
tee to reach them during the convention
at Denver, sending copies to you. There-
fore, if you will send me the names of
the officers, with the dates and meeting
ace of the convention, I will have let-
there awaiting their arrival. Also,
address while in Denver.
not already done so, I will

3. Georgia, Hon. Harry L. Brown, Dean, ~

lanta Chamber of Commerce and the At-
lanta Hotel Association to extend an in-
vitation. You will probably like to have
an invitation. You will probably like to
have a letter from the Mayor of Atlanta,
Governor Talmadge, the Prsident of the
University of Georgia, Athens, Extension
Director, Mr. Walter S. Brown, and per-
haps other State leaders.
If I can help you get invitations from
any of the above, or anyone else, let me
know. But, be sure to send me the dates
and place of your convention as soon as *
possible. :
The following letters show the work
that was done to get this convention held
in Atlanta. Letter from Mr. W. F. Hall
February 7, 1949:
Our National Convention is to be held
on February 15. 16 and 17 at the Shirley-
Savoy Hotel in Denver, Colorado, and I
will certainly appreciate it if you can
write the National President, Kent Leav-
itt, at that address. That will also be my
address during the convention.
In reference to letters from State lead-
ers that you mentioned I have written
Governor Talmadge requesting that he
write a letter of invitation, but as yet,
have not heard from him. I do have let-
ters from the Convention Bureau of the
Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the
Atlanta Hotel Association. It will assist
me greatly if you can secure letters of
invitation from the Mayor of Atlanta, the
President of the University of Georgia,
Mr. Walter S. Brown, and any others that
you feel will help us in this matter.
Letter to Mr. Kent Leavitt, President,
National Association, Soil Conservation
Supervisors, Shirley-Savoy Hotel, Den-
ver, Colorado.
"My good friend, Mr. W. F. Hall, Presi-
dent, Georgia Association, Soil Conserva-
tion Supervisors, has advised me he is in-
viting the 1950 National Convention to
meet in Atlanta, Georgia.
As Commissioner of Agriculture of the
"Empire State of the Southeast, and on
behalf of the Agricultural interest of
Georgia, I want to supplement this invi-
tation. The bedrock of the economy of
this great section is largely agriculture.
Our soils have been producing for more
than one hundred years, but it was not
until recently that a concerted effort was
made to conserve our basic inheritance.
Therefore, we feel that this systematic
cooperative program of soil conservation
is a godsend to this predominantly agri-
cultural area.
In view of the National prominence of
the program throughout this section and
to further emphasize its importance, I
feel that the National conference should
meet in the Southeast. It would not only
give impetus to our present program, but
it would give the leadership of this great
agricultural section an opportunity to be-
come more familiar with the National
program.
If you will come to Georgia, we pledge
every facility of this Department to mak-
ing the conference a success.
Georgia is a great State, with much to
offer our visiting-friends. Therefore, I
feel the members of your Association will
be happy to visit this section in 1950."
The following letter was written to
Mayor W. B. Hartsfield, Atlanta, Hon.
Walter S. Brown, Director, Extension
Service, Athens, Georgia, Hon. C. C. Mur-
ray, Director, Georgia Experiment Sta-
tion, Experiment, Georgia. :
"There is attached a copy of my letter
to Mr. Kent Leavitt, President, National
Association Soil Conservation Supervis-
ors, whose annual convention is meeting
in Denver, Colorado, February 15-17,
1949.
Mr. W. F. Hall. Sparta, Georgia, Presi-
dent of the Georgia Association, is ex-
tending an invitation for the 1950 con-
vention to meet in Atlanta.
The Convention Bureau of the Atlanta_
Chamber of Commerce, and the Atlanta
Hotel Association, have supplemented Mr.
Hall's invitation. The Governor and oth-
er Agricultural leaders of the State are
likewise sending invitations, and I feel it
would be very helpful if you will write
a letter on behalf of the City of Atlanta,
sending a copy to Mr. Hall at the same
address in Denver, Colorado.
Under date of February 17, I received
the following telegram from Messrs. W.
F. Hall, W. M. Holsenbeck and J. H.
Towns:
National Association Districts meet At-
lanta 1950.
Fxtracts taken from letters from of-
ficials of State and National Associations,
Soil Conservation Supervisors:
"T especially want you to make the Ma-
con train and Bus tour so that the great-
est possible number of our farmer guests
will be able to meet you personally.
We are deeply grateful for all you have .
done to make our Convention a success,
Mr. Holtons advice and leadership has
been a deciding factor in many ways, and
I dont see how you could have picked a
better man to give us help that we need-
ed so badly. :
Thanks a million for everything.
W. F. Hall, State President.
"T want to thank you and Mr. Holton
for your helping us make this conven-
tion a success. Your help was of great
value and we appreciate it.
W. F. Hall, State President
"Enclosed is a copy of a letter that I
have written Mr. J. C. Holton to thank
him for the excellent work he did for us
in arranging hotel accommodations for
1,200 folks who attended the convention
of our National Association recently held
in Atlanta. :
I understand that it was through your
generous auspices that Mr. Holton was
able to take the time to do a thorough
job. I dont know how we would have
managed without him.
