RM DEVELOPME

; SIX :
The development of planting seed pro-
duction so as to save the tremendous

- amounts of money that now go out of the
- State each year for planting seed.

Special interest to be put on the produc-
tion of planting peanuts, seed legumes,
corn, cotton and other crop seeds.

SEVEN
The development of milk products, es-

A pecially for processing purposes, as well

as fluid milk consumption.

The establishment of milk and vege-
table routes through the counties as fast
as the volume of production can be

brought to the point where truck routes

- ean be economically operated. The de-
velopment, through private capital, of

milk and milk processing plants. The first
of these to be erected in four strategic

points so that milk products in all parts
of the State will be within reasonable

trucking distance of a processing plant.
EIGHT

Especial cooperation with the ~Depart- .
~ ment of Health, the Extension Forces and

the Vocational Teachers in improving nu-

tritional value of Georgia grown vege-

tables and fruits, etc., through the use of
necessary plant foods and minerals, which
in some cases are naturally deficient in

_ our soil.

_ There is an unlimited opportunity in
this field for improving the health of the

people, as well as improving the lot of the-

farmers who produce these crops.
NINE

Encouragement and* development of
poultry processing plants with standard

_ grades and official marking by licensed

veterinarians, to give Georgia produced
and processed poultry a high rank in the
cities to which they are shipped.

ae TEN. .,

To secure from the Federal Govern-
ment, at the close of the war, machinery
for the use of farmers in each county to
properly terrace their lands, building
dams for fish, water control and _irriga-
tion purposes.

Close co-operation with the Department
of Natural Resources, Extension Forces
and Vocational teachers in carrying this
into effect.

\

- _ ELEVEN

\Urging land owners to follow a practice
in pulp wood cutting, so as to leave a suf-
ficient number of their best trees properly
distributed on the land to produce a crop
of saw timber while growing another
crop of pulp wood,

Also, urging that some.trees be left on
land that is sown in permanent pastures
so ag to provide necessary shade for the
animals during the hot summer days and

NUMBER 28

TWELVE
A continual increase of the cooperative
work now being done by the Department
of Agriculture and Federal Agencies such

as Federal State inspection of fruits and

vegetables.
The cooperative work now being done

between the Bureau of Animal Industry ae)

and the State Department of Agriculture.

The work now being done cooperatively
between Federal Food, Feed, Seed,

Weights and Measures Inspectors and the
State Department of Agriculture.

THIRTEEN

It is proposed, through private capital,

to develop sufficient grain elevators at
strategic points to handle all corn, wheat,
etc., that can be produced profitably for
milling purposes.

A great deal of Georgia grain suffers
severe deterioration and damage through

the ravages of weevils and for the lack of _ :

proper handling and proper storage.
_ All of the shuck and-.cob from corn, as

well as all of the screenings from threshed
grain can be profitably utilized in the

manufacture of stock and dairy feeds.

In the past, a great many Georgia farm-__

ers have been unable to find a profitable
market, at harvest time, for corn and oth-
er grains due to lack of elevator facilities.

. . FOURTEEN

The growing of sweet potatoes, of the
jumbo type, should be largely developed

and increased in Georgia for stock feed.
Georgia land will produce potatoes of

this type and give very large yields.
These potatoes not only provide one of

the best feeds for hogs in their raw state. _ : 3

but they can be dehydrated and ground
into meal and provide the best known sub-
stitute for corn in a beef cattle ration. ~
As most farmers know, the production
per acre of this type potato is much great

-er on average land than the production ot

good potatoes for table use and for proces- 3

sing for table use.

The reasons for each of these plans is
more fully discussed in the bi-annual re-
port of the Department of Agriculture.

They are at too great length to carry in
this issue of the Market Bulletin, but I

will discuss each of them at more length

from time to time in the Bulletin.
During the past five and one-half years
tremendous progress has been made to-
wards attaining this goal. With the in-
creased interest now manifest by farmers,
business men, newspapers and State Ad-

ministrations I believe it will be possible
- during the next fol years to reach the

goals set out.
In the next editorial of the Bulletin ft
will give you a report on the outstanding
progress made in carrying out this plan
TOM LINDER,
Commissioner of Agriculture
