United States went to France, Italy,
Holland, N orway, Africa and Java.

During the same five months, pur-
chases of wheat in Canada and shipped

to England were 50,645,225 bushels at
_a cost of $89,878,140.39. Wheat purchas-

ed in Canada for shipment to other

countries was negligible in comparison.

Wheat purchased during the same
period in the United States amounted
roughly to 10 per cent of the wheat pur-
chased in Canada. <

COTTON.

During six months, from August 1,
1948, through January 31, 1949, total
purehases of cotton were equivalent to
918.544 bales averaging 500 pounds.
The average cost of the cotton was
361/5 cents a pound. There is nothing
to indicate the grade or staple.

During the first two months, August

and September 1948, total purchases

were equal to 366,754 bales of 500 pound
average. The average cost: was 37.71le

~ per potind, There is no: explanation as to
why it was necessary to pay 37.71le per

pound in August and September. Dur-

ing the next four months, the average
cost Was around 35 per pound,

A remarkable thing in this connection
is that practically all of the 37 cotton
was purehased from Anderson-Clayton
Cotton Company and Mel adden and

~ Brother and was shipped to hina.

During August and. September 1948,
there went to China, in equivalent of
500. pound bales,

Here in the United States they tell us
that lard is a drug on the market.

The report does not explain why the
ECA purchased two separate shipments
of lard from Unilever of Rotterdam,
Holland, and shipped them to sie
in Vienna, Austria. ~

As you will remember I have witoraua 4
you in previous artieles that Unilever
of Rotterdam. and Unilever of Austria
is the same corporation as Lever Bros.
in our own eountry. We eannot help

ped toa government ageney instead of
the same firm in another country.

These two shipments bought from
Unilever in one country and shipped to
Unilever in another country. cost. the
taxpayers of these United States near-

At the same time our Government =
was buying lard from Unilever in Hol-
land and shipping it to Unileverin Au-
stria, they were telling us lard in our
own country was a drug upen the mar-

ment was placing a floor under the price
of cotton seed to keep it from going be-
low tost of prodrtction. This same thing
applies to Sovbeans. 1
