VOLUME 32

Editorial By TOM LINDER

The tremendous amount of money be-
ing spent in Washington and all over
the country for repeal of the tax on mar-
garine shows where the water hits the
wheel.

_ You can hardly read a newspaper or
listen to a radio but what you hear ad-
vocates for repeal of the tax on marga-
rine. Margarine is a commodity from
cultural products. We know that the
rmers are not putting up all this
money for the campaign in favor of
margarine. Let us, therefore, look into
the record and see where all the smoke
is coming from.

About a vear ago, in the Mayflower
Hotel in Washington, at a dinner. at-
tended by 240 Congressmen and Sen-
ators, I revealed the record of the Inter-
national Fats and Oils Combine. I re-
vealed how they worked through the
Administration in Washington to
plunder both the producer and the con-
sumer by operation of national laws.

- At that time J revealed that Lever
Brothers of this country is a subsidiary
-@ of Unilever whose home offices are in
Rotterdam and London.

~ Since that time Lever Brothers have
steadily gone forward towards obtain-
ing a monopoly on the manufacture of
Margarine in this country. Newspaper
accounts state they now own 80% of all
Margarine manufacturing plants in the
United States.

Proctor and Gamble, who are large
Operators in the fats and oils field, are
also working for the repeal of the tax on
Margarine.

UTTER vs. Margarine

to these export controls that prices of
have so

many agricultural products
seriously declined.

At the meeting in Washington I re-
vealed how this Interhational Fats and
Oils Combine had their own man in the
United States Department of Agricul-
ture, under the then Secretary of Agri-
culture, to fix the price on the farmers
crops which produce oil such as cotton-
seed oil, peanuts and soybeans as well
as hog lard and beef tallow.

At the same time they had their own

man in the OPA office under the Direc-

tor, Bowles Weevil to fix the price of
finished products made from cottonseed
oil, peanuts, hog lard and beef. tallow. to
the consuming. public.

Now, with 80% of the margarine man-
ufacturing plants in the United States
in their hands, they are putting on a
drive that is costing millions of dollars
to substitute margarine for butter in

the United States.

At the meeting in Washington a yeat
ago, I read from the record how United
States Marines in the Solomon Islands,
under fire from the Japs, found. signs
in the cocoanut groves warning them
that the United States must pay $50.00
to this International Oils and Fats Com-
bine for every cocoanut tree that the
American boys might injure in building
defenses to protect the Islands and o-
coanut groves from the Japanese.

The Reciprocal _(mis-called) Trade
Agreements Act is simply another link
in the chain of this and other Interna-
tional groups for flooding America with
foreign oils and other foreign agricul-
tural products.

To give. you an idea how these mis-

called Reciprocal Trade Agreements
work I have before me some figures

from the United States Department of
Commerce for the year 1947 and also for
eleven months of 1948 as follows:

money forthe rebuilding of the coun-

The American farmers were told that
the spending of these billions of dollars
for. European recovery would create a
vast market for American agricultural

From the above figures you will note
that in 1947 exports of these six groups
of merchandise amounted to $5,424-mil-

Now during the-eleven months of
1948, from January through November,
our exports of the identical merchan-
