agricultural items of less than twelve
per cent.

Now lets see how that compares

with exports of the four main indus-
trial items:
In 1946, our exports of four main in-

dustrial items amounted to $2,605,334,-

708.00. In 1947 these exports increased
to $5,519,589,393.00. This was an in-
erease in exports of the four main in-
dustrial items of $2,914,254,685.00. This
was an increase of more than one hun-
dred per cent. Exports of the four main

agricultural crops increased twelve per

cent, while exports of the four main in-
dustrial products increased more than
This is what
the reciprocal trade agreements act

does to agriculture.

PECANS
An outstanding example of what re-

-ciprocal trade agreements will do for

American agriculture, is the present
plight of American pecan growers.

Recently I carried an article in the
Bulletin showing the tremendous im-
ports of tree nuts from foreign coun-
tries and the effect that these imported
nuts are now having on our domestic
producers.

Large imports of any es
product will do the same thing to the

price of that crop that imports of tree

nuts has done for the price of pecans.

LOBBYING

I note in the papers a statement from
the White House that the President
wants Congress to- investigate- lob-
byists.

T think this is a fine suggestion. If
anyone has sought improperly to in-
fluence any members of Congress,

Motor Anti-Freeze Warning

Farmers owning or operating
tractors, trucks and automobiles should
be sure in buying anti-freeze to have
the dealer guarantee against injury
to their motor blocks or radiators.

It has come to our (or my) atten-
tion that unscrupulous sources are
making and selling mixtures contain-
ing calcium chloride, similar to com-
mon salt, which will ruin your equip-
ment.
Unfortunately our laws do_ not
cover the sale of these products. Many
}: brands sold through reliable auto-
| mobile agents and service stations are
safe and suitab e for anti- freeze. use.

those members should know who it was _
and what they did.

Certainly, no one can lobby for. or
against national legislation
talking to members of the Senate or of
the House.
who they were and are, and what they
said and did.

Most of the vile legislation that haa
been put over, such as the reciprocal |
trade agreements act, has been sponsor-
ed by officials and emplovees of the Na-
tional Government itself. Congress
should find out what their motive was
and who was behind it.

If any member of the House or Sen-
ate has been persuaded or influenced
to change his vote by any lobbyist, he
ought to know who the lob byist is and
know how he was persuaded.

T note by the newspapers from time
to time that certain members of the
Senate and House are called to the
White House for the alleged purpose of
being persuaded on how to vote on ie
islation.

Under the Co the Hxeciat

tive, Judicial and Legislative branches:

of the Government are separate, dis-
tinet and independent. Is it a violation
of the Constitution of the United States
for the President of the United States
to seek to influence Congress or for the
Commissioner of Agriculture of any
state to do so?

- Ts it a violation of the Constitution

- of the United States for the Secretary

of Agriculture of the United States te
seek to influence Congress or for the
Commissioner of Agriculture of any
state to do so?

On many occasions, the heads of
various divisions of the Federal Goy-
ernment in Washington have refused
to turn over the records of the depart-
ments for the inspection of Congress.
Reeently, the Department of State re-
fused to reveal the findings of the FBI
as to the communistic leanings of em-
plovees of the State Department. This
was done on the ground that the Hxee-
utive Branch of Government is separate
and independent of the Legislative
Branch.

By all means, Congress should make
a full, fair and open investigation of all
lobbying, both with members of Con-
gress and with the Departments of the
Government for special favor. Lay the
chips on top of the table; hew to the
line and. es the chips fall where they
