troduced a measure

tor Aikens bill, author- |
iven to the U. s. Secre-_

ses its identity as an agri- |

hi Mr.

supports under basic farm

crops.

Under the present law, price
supports. are set at 90 per cent
of parity on most crops and at

9214 per cent of parity on cot- |

ton. Under the Aiken bill, the
Secretary of Agriculture, in his
discretion, could have fixed the

support price as low as 60 per

cent of parity.

The National Farm Bureau, at
heir last National meeting, en-
dorsed the long-term farm pro-
gram. Some other farm organ-
izations also endorsed the long-
- Gover-
nor Dewey, no doubt thought
that the farm organizations en-
dorsement meant that the indi-

vidual farmers would vote for a |

President who favored the Aik-
en bill. Therefore, Governor
Dewey came.out and endorsed
the Aiken bill which would have
reduced government supports
of basic farm crops.

President Truman, on the oth-
er hand, went into the Midwest

and West and very energetical-.

ly attacked the Eightieth Con-
gress and the passage of the
Aiken bill. He pledged to main-
tain full government support
of floors under basic farm
crops. Because of Mr. Trumans

energetic fight on this question, .

at least half of the farmers of

- the Middlewest who are norm-

_ supported
of Mr.

ally Republicans,
Mr. Truman instead

_ Dewey. This is borne out by the

fact that in such states as Ohio
and Illinois, Mr. Truman was
the victor. Normally, the big

city vote in these states is Dem-.

ocratic, but normally the Re-
publican farm vote, coming

from the counties, overcome

the heavy majorities piled up
in Chicago, Cleveland and other
cities in Illinois and Ohio. Dur-
ing the early hours of the night
of November 2, when early re-
turns from the fig cities showed
Truman_ leading. it was

inthe large cities,

confidently expected that, as :

usual, when the votes came in

from the country counties,
where the farmers vote, the city
majorities would be wiped out
and Mr. Dewey would carry
those normally Republican
states. a

However, as the night wore
on, those listening at the radio

began to discern that the elec-

tion returns from the county
precincts of Ohio and _ Illinois
would not materially cut down
the lead which President Tru-
man had piled up in the big

cities.

In the Southern states, most of
the farmers voted the Demo-

~crat ticket because it was the

Democrat ticket. Those who
did not do so, largely voted for
Mr. Thurmond and not for Mr.
Dewey.

THE CITY VOTE

Mr. Truman, in his speeches
told the
housewives that prices were
too high and the Eightieth Con-
gress was to blame.

He told the labor unions that -
the Eightieth Congress was to
blame for enactment of the
Taft-Hartley Law and promised
its repeal. He went into Harlem
and promised full enforcement
of his Civil Rights measure and
blamed the Eightieth Congress

for not having already enacted
