There is substantial-

, and plowed up cot-

people do not eat dollars, wear dollars,
nor live in dollars. The people must
have the pigs, the wheat, the corn, and
the cotton to live on. Therefore, when
you destroy pigs wheat, corn and cot-

ton, you are destroying the things that

people live on. You get just as many
dollars as you would before, but the dol-
lars buy comparatively less because
they cannot buy as much of the things
on which people live.

The trouble with our economists is
that they deal in terms of money and
translate all commodities into terms of
money. Money is merely a convenience

for distributing the commodities, and it -
should never be confused with the .

value of cannmodiites to
needs.

The trouble with most of us is we only
think half through a problem and stop;
therefore, we arrive at a wrong conclus-
ion. It is necessary to think any prob-

meet human

- lem through to arrive at a correct: con-
~ ciusion.

Theoretically, if you. destroyed: one-
half of the houses in the country, ihe
remaining half would bring more money
than all oe the buildings will bring.

Yet, we all know that it you destroyed

one-half of the houses, then one-half of

the people would be without houses.

The increased money value of the re-
maining houses would be a handicap
to those who had no houses. - :
Under the law of supply-and demand,
which men cannot change except tem-
porarily, increased production of things

means lower prices in terms of money.

Yet, increased producton of things is
the most essential of anything that we
can do to relieve the distress of people
at home and abroad.

We are therefore confronted with a
great dilemma.

If we limit production either volun-
tarily or through necessity, those who
produce will get more dollars, but the
people generally will suffer because of
the shortage of things.

If, on the other hand, we increase pro-
duction, then those who produce will
get fewer. dollars. If we get fewer dol-
lars for what we produce, then our tre-
mendous debtsnational, state, local,
and privatewill become intolerable.
We cannot pay these debts with fewer
dollars. On the other hand we cannot
supply the needs of the people without
the increased production of things.

This is the basie reason why debt will

dollars. The only way to have more
dollars is with higher prices. The only.
way to have higher prices is by produe-
ing less things. Producing less things -
means the people must suffer for lack of
sufficient food, clothing and houses.

Just as Mr. Wallace and the New
Deal had a half-baked idea that you
could produce prosperity by getting
more dollars for less things, so a great
many people today believe that you can
have prosperity in spite of the tremen-
dous debts of the nation, the states, ithe
counties, and the people. This you can
not have.

THREE ALTERNATIVES

The people of this country today hay eo:

three choices:

First, they can live on short. lations,
fewer clothing, and fewer houses for a
number of years while they pay out-
standing debts with blood, sweat and
tears.

Second, this country can have infla-
tion, whereby dollars become so cheap
and so plentiful that outstanding debts
will amount to only a nomminal figure.

Third, they can repudiate outstand- -
ing debts as, Russia has done and make
a honbine out of outstanding Govern-
ment bonds and get rid of the debt.

One of these Temetias is about as
bad as the other. As between the three,
there is little to choose.

Every dollar that Congress, State
Legislatures, and other legislative
hodies appropriaete above the income
simply aggravates this condition.

All expenditures, not absolutely es-
sential for public needs, should be eut
to the bone.

All increases of expenditures means
more sweat, blood, and tears the people
must pay.

All the things that we export in-
creases this burden that the people
must. bear.

All the things that we import, ex-
cept necessities, decreases our ability;
to pay. i

These truths are hard, stark and bit-
ter. Nevertheless, they -are truths.
Truth is eternal; it is the law of God
working among men.

When we under stand these hitter
truths which face this nation, then we
understand the meaning of the words of
John, in Rey elation 10: "10: |

And I took the little book out of the angel's
hand, and ate it up: and it was in my mouth
sweet as honey; and as soon as I had eaten it,
my belly was bitter.Revelation 10:10.
