Driving along the highway and look-

field of oil wells, it seemed there should
be plenty of oil to run all the industry
in the country.

sugar beets standing on the side tracks, _
~ We stopped at the town of Lamar to_
buy some gas and were informed that |
the elevation there was 3100 feet. This
is the same elevation of Neals Gap in
North Georgia. But, unlike the country,
at Neals Gap, we were traveling over *
long stretches of level land. We saw a
good many cattle, sheep and horses, but
almost everywhere we saw the fields of
beets. : . : cee
We were now approaching the Rock-
ies. In the distance we could see Pikes
Peak, with the sun glistening on the |
snow which covers it most of the year.
~ Out in Kansas we came to the Arkan-
sas River. I had always thought of the
Arkansas River as being in the State _
of Arkansas. It does come through the. ~
State of Arkansas and empty into tie
Mississippi, but actually it rises in the
Rocky Mountans a very short distance
from Pikes Peak. - ee
The source of the Arkansas River and
the Rio Grande are not more than fifty, _

Below the bridge is the Arkansas River,
but it is 1,050 feet from the bridge down
to the water of the river.
