On Monday night, March 4, I met
ith Carolina. A number of farmers:
d business men in Greenville are very _
here was a splendid gathering nek :

market here.
- sembly for about an hour and then
; manufacturing districts in the |
hers are millions of people living .
frack erops aniong those who ae |
them.
This would bring more of the con-
_ sumers dollar to the farmers pockets.
A great many people in Georgia do
not yet realize that the work done al-
ready in devoloping a marketing sys-
tem in Georgia is attracting: wide at-
tention throughout the United States
and even across the borders in neigh-
boring countries.
This is a fact however, and hardly
a week goes by that I do not receive
a call from outside the State for assist-
~anee and ideas in developing markets
for farm products.
The: authorities who have flie re-
sponsibility of financing a market in
Greenville were very anxious to get
an expression from a representative
group of their citizens as to whether
or not they should undertake the erec-
tion of a farmers market there.
This group asked me to explain just
chow the Atlanta Market operated and.
what our experience had been with the
I talked to that fine as-
answered innumerable questions from
officials, bankers, manufacturers, farm-
ers and Wen hans as to the effect that
could likely be expected on their busi-
ness from the erection of such a mar-
ket.
At the conclusion of the meeting a
show of hands was called for and the
expression was unanimously 4n favor ~
of undertaking the project.
As I have often stated in these col-
umns, great mining districts of West
| Virginia and Pennsylvania offer almost
unlimited markets for perishable farm
products if we will make arrangements
to get them distributed into the thous-
ands of consumer communities,
EK ixperience has shown very definite-
ly that many times, in fact, most of the
time when we haye a elutted market on
farm products it is due to lack of prop-
er distribution.
Tt.is easy to have a glutted market in
one town or city while at the same time
there are other towns and cities very
much in need of those products going
to waste on a glutted market.
~ Almost all of the farmers problems
can be summed up in one great problem
he has grown, and those that he oan
he did grow.
great shortage of food. This country. :
and that one big a is to find
profitable markets for the crops that
grow.
Everything iat is undertaken fox ns
the benefit of the farmer is either di-
rectly or indirectly an attempt to > get
him a profitable market. Q
; i sore
When the Government indoridok to. &
reduce acreage and control production,
the fundamental idea was that by re-
ducing the volume of production the
farmer would get a better price for what a
The idea behind Government a
sidies is to give the farmer a_ better
price for the things he grows. The
ideas behind soil conservation, land
rental checks and crop bonus checks
were all to give the farmer a better
price.
Giving the farmer a better. price by ae
any round-a-bout method or subterfuge _
is economically unsound and in the
long run is detrimental both to the
farmer and to the country as a whole. eo
We should bend every effort to jes
the farmer a profitable price in th
market place for the things he grows
and the main problem in doing this 33 (|
to get general distribution of these
products among the people who Cone
sume them.
When we get out and try to increase
the yield per acre of a crop the funda=
mental idea is to give the farmer a more _
profitable market by reducing the cost ee
per unit of producing the rop. s
When we advocate the breading and: 2
selection of planting seed the idea is to
give the farmer a better market by,
helping him to produce a larger a =.
and a better quality. | a
Everything that we do has the same. =<
fundamental purpose of providing a
more profitable market. Why then,
should we not attack the problem di-
rectly and on the obvious frontthat is
adequate and prompt distribution of 3
all the farmer produces and a fair price
in the market place when he carries -
to the market. =

- Subterranean clover is a winter annual
erowing season very much like that of crimson
On established pastures of subterranean clover,
may germinate following rains in July, August, 6 5Y
tember and many of the seedlings may be killed I
summer droughts. However, subterranean lover
are considerably larger than crimson and other Co:
pasture clovers and can stand considerably mor
verse weather conditions. than crimson clover,
there are many hard seeds that will germinate
and maintain a stand even though the earlier gerr
ing seedlings are killed by drought. Its early fal
winter growth and the dense mat or runners and _
suggest. that it would be a good winter legume
crop.
Subterranean clover is very nutritious and (
more calcium than any other common pasture |
or grass and as much or more protein than other clo
The chief drawbacks to this clover are the difficu
harvesting seed and the severity of a leaf spot
This clover has volunteered in one experiment
pasture for over twenty years, thus, it appears
well adapted to Georgia conditions.
If rain falls are favorable, subterranean ce]
make sufficient fall growth to provide some
consists entirely of leaves and leaf stalks and Ss
ranean clover at that time ean hardly be disting.
from crimson clover. Runners are developed i
in contrast to the prominent upright seed stal
oped by crimson clover. These runners do not se
but may run out two to three feet in every direction
the center of the plant. Both leaves and flo
borne along the runners. Shortly after the flo
opened, the flower or seedstalk bonds downward a:
geeds are buried in or at the surface of the soil, de
ing upon whether the soil is moist and soft or
hard during the seeding period.
More success has been obtained Wnen sunt
clover was seeded on established sods of bermuc
lis grass than whn seeded on bare soil such a:
prepared seedbed. If sown on a sod, this shoul
ified before seeding the clover. If seeded on
seedbed a better stand will be obtained if consid
seedbed could be obtained by lightly dicks
lespedeza, or other crop stubble. |
About October 1 is the best time for seeding
Piedmont Section: seeding should be done e
north Georgia and later in south Georgia. A seed
to give a stand; however, heavier rates may be
for crop cover purposes. The seed should be in
with the crimson clover or white dutch clov
inoculum. jee
Subterranean tover has about tue sume ft
requirements as does crimson clover. An applic:
at least 400 to 600 pounds of superphosphate wit
one ton of limestone per acre should insure su
establishment: If basic slag is used, 800 to 1,20(
per acre should be applied. On some e soils pot
also be required. 2
Subterranean clover makes a very de
like growth and will crowd out lespedeza as \
weeds, thus it should not be seeded where
to have lespedeza. On fertile soil the growth
that bermuda grass may be seriously killed ou
the clover is kept grazed down. A leaf spot
| sometimes called blackpatch, is usually foun
terranean clover late in spring and when warm
| weather conditions prevail. If the clover is
grazed closely during this period, the dense g
clover makes conditions favorable to the rapi
of the disease and the clover stand may be s
reduced or killed out entirely in the raeas mos
ed. This clover will stand close grazing | bec
peculiar seeding habits, and requires close
control blackpatch disease.
Very few seed companies have handlec
because of lack of demand for it. Robert Nichol
Company of Dallas, Texas, is the only im
| we know of, but other seed companies have
aa taken an interest in this clover and ey
dle it.
The following varieties of subterranean
showed desirable qualities: Tallarock, Merin
thur, Bass, Nageela, and Mt. Barker. The follo
rieties exhibit less- promising characteristics
