ECIPROCAL T R A D

ue Tom Linder

The House Ways and. Means Com-_

ee is now holding hearings on a bill

o extend the life of the Reciprocal

rade Agreements Act.

Still worse, this bill provides for sf
lowering the tariff on agricultural pro-

ucts 75 per cent below the rates fixed
y Congress. If someone would pre-
sent a bill for Congress itself to lower

1e tariff 75 per cent, such a bill would.

| 2 a per guard to vote for

t] a ie Bate Ds itself, would not even
nsider doing.

If you had a. bill in Carian to.

wer i tariffs 75 per cent, every
Jabor leader, every labor organization

and every industrialist in the United |
States. would be opposing it tooth and

claw.

> Vel, when a bill is proposed to give |

the Secretary of State the power to
reduce tariffs on products of agricul-
ture 75 per cent, we find labor leaders
and industrialists doing everything in
their power to get this bill passed.
Such labor leaders and such indus-

trialists are foolish enough to believe

hat they can have free trade where

the farmer has to pay the bill and, at |

the same time, that they can have high

t riff. walls to protect high prices in~)

: WILL APPEAR BEFORE THIS
A COMMITTEE AND OPPOSE
THIS BILL

Ls plan_ to. be in Washinton on
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of

this week in opposition to the passage
f this bill.

Congressman Doughton, who is

airman of the House Ways and |.

leans Committee, has notified me that
- will be heard at this time. I shall
ndeavor to present the strongest pos-
S case og the enactment of this

"PEOPLE OF THE WORLD

We are now within an extended

IE AGR

eve, died in the battles oe eat

world war.
There will not be one , pound of food
produced in other countries. that will
not be needed by the starving people

of Europe and, Asia.
~The American farmer should he on-

couraged to produce every ounce of

food that he possibly can.
There is a serious shortage of man-

power and farm equipment here at,
home on the farms. :
In the face of the discouragement

which already faces the farmers of
America, it is unthinkable for Congress

to place an additional discouragement
in the path. of the American farmer.
_ -It is utterly selfish for us to think
of importing and consuming food that
the starving people of the world will,
need, when we can produce our own

food here in the United States if we

are but permitted to do so.

We can feed and clothe ourselves
if we will. It is all right for our ships
to haul wheat and corn and all kinds of

food from South America to feed the

starving people of Kurope and Asia.
It might help to build a world peace

| for us to do that.

But for us to take our Shine haul

that food in hete and take it out of |

the mouths of starving people, when
we are amply capable of producing our
own food, is unthinkable.

Such a course certainly will not

make us any friends Amone the th 1
ing people of the other. countries of
world. | a

These trade treaties will not b re

| anyone except a few selfish Int re

tional traders. oe
They will make us enemies oe

They will take bread out of the mou
of starving women and children,

It is time for Congress to resum
the responsibility of legislating di

ly under its constitutional power

"tts is time for Congress to cease del:
gating to boards and bureaus the p

to destroy the liberties of the Ame

people. Its a long way back to const
tutional government but the longer

wait to start, the longer will b
