EDITORIALBy Tom Linder
One of the favorite arguments of those engaged in
e futures business is that futures trading makes prices.
_- Their argument is that it is necessary to have futures
xchanges in order to determine prices of cotton, wheat,
corn and many other agricultural commodities.
_ Since when has it become necessary to use a eambling
rame to make prices for farmers crops? Is it possible
hat we cannot determine prices of cotton, corn and wheat
xcept by operating gambling houses?
_ If it is necessary to operate a futures gambling house
9 find the price of cotton, corn and wheat, then why is it
t equally necessary to operate a futures gambling house
find prices on shoes, automobiles, electric lights and
ailroad fares?
Who determines, and how, just what commodities.
st be priced with a futures gambling game? The an-
wer is obvious.
The farmer is the only man who had nothing. to do
with pricing his own product.
_ The man who makes shoes, prices them. The man who
kes automobiles, prices them. The man who sells elec-
rie current, prices it, and the man who sells railroad
ansportation, prices it.
- The farmer simply hauls his produce to market and,
n etiect. savs, What will you give me for it?
The futures gambler would not dare sell shoes short,
yecause the gambler knows that the shoe manufacturer
would not submit*to such treatment. |
The futures gambler would not dare sell automobiles
hort, because he knows the manufacturer of automobiles.
ould not submit to such treatment. The futures gambler
would not dare sell. electric current short, because he
dknows the power companies would not submit to such
atment. The futures gambler would not dare sell rail-
oad transportation short, because the railroads would not
submit to such treatment. 4
The futures gambler will sell farm products short, be-
ause he knows the farmer is unorganized and cannot help
