- EDITORIALBy Tom Linder
On Thursday, Match 19, there was a meeting in my office
a number of dairymen and officials of the city of Atlanta.
There has been considerable dissatisfaction among a large
mber of dairymen because they felt they were not getting fair
atment in the matter of city inspection.
1 have made investigation in some cases and was convinced
some dairymen had been unfairly treated and had been
uied the right to sell their milk without sufficient cause. _
The city officials and dairymen came to my office for a
onference on the matter. After going over the records in some
ases and discussing all the problems involved, it was unani-
1ously agreed that in the future no city inspector could arbi-
carily deprive any dairyman of the right to sell his milk in the
ry of Atlanta.
foe Should the inspector decide that the aa is pate in oe
tantial compliance with the requirements of the city health
vs the inspector is authorized to call upon the dairyman to
w cause why his permit should not be revoked. aa
The. dairyman then has the right to go directly to Dr. W. F.
ackney, Assistant City Health Officer. Should Dr. Hackney
the dairyman be unable to iron out the matter satisfactorily,
po tyman has the right to call upon Dr. Hackney for a

In so far as the United States is concerned, too little

Too little and too late is the greatest danger confron n
our country in the next years of this great conflict.

TOO LITTLE AND TOO LATE.
(Continued from Page One)
_blindly chosen to class the farmers as a high pressure
group and to refer to the farm bloc as a selfish pres-
_ sure organization seeking to create inflation.
Nothing could be further from the truth and no
one could hold this opinion who would only open his
mind and let the sunshine of truth penetrate even for
a few minutes. = oS
= The farmers of America not only do not seek an
_ unfair profitfarmers of America indeed are not
_ insisting on any profit at all. The farmers of America
only ask to be permitted to produce food and clothing
for the nation.
____ A few days ago War Production Chief Donald
Nelson, Under Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson
War Labor Board Chairman William H. Davis, and
Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins appeared before
a Congressional Committee and opposed repeal of
he forty hour law; they opposed repeal of time and
half for overtime; they opposed a further limitation
on war profits for manufacturersall on the grounds
that any measure limiting pay or profits would like-
wise limit war production. io
Is it not obvious even to a casual reader that
manufacturers of war materials could not and would
oe expected. to produce war supplies at less than
cost? , .
___ Is it not obvious that they could not long produce
at less than cost? :
Is it not equally obvious that the: farmers can
not produce food and clothing for the nation at pre-
x
-yailing prices of farm products?
This is so clear that it seems that no one could
fail to understand it. ee
_ Prices which farmers pay have increased ninety-
five per cent, while parity as fixed by Mr. Wickard
has increased nineteen per cent. Yet today the ad-
ministfation in Washington is urging that it be per-
itted to sell farm products at less than parity.
_ The prices of wages outside of agriculture have
increased one hundred and seventy-eight per cent
_ since the parity period of 1910 to 1914. The prices
of farmers products have only increased nineteen per
cent. .
{
Should not a school child be able to understand
that the farmer cannot employ labor in competition
with government and industry with farm prices where
they are? s ee
aS For of all sad words of tongue or pen,
The saddest are these:
> 99
It might have been.
Unless the editors of our large city papers, our
officials in Washington, and radio commentators
open their eyes and see the desperate situation in
which the farmer is placed, we will soon see the day
when the entire nation will realize that the farmer
has been crucified; that in spite of all that he could
do he has been denied the privilege of feeding and
clothing people, and that it must be said of the most
vital productionfood and clothes-we have produc-
ed too little and too late. |

for any reason, fail to hold the hearing within that
time then the matter is to stand in status quo auto-
matically until the committee does hear and pass on
Should this committee,
any dairyman, before
being denied the right to sell his milk, should have a
fair and impartial hearing before disinterested people
and people who are not charged with the inspection
work in the field.
It is also agreed before any dairyman is cut off
from selling his milk that he has a right to call for a
joint inspection by the City inspector and the in-
spector of the
State Department of Agriculture.
I found that the dairymen are all willing to make
every effort to comply with any reasonable require-
ment for the production of clean, wholesome milk, and
it is my belief that only a sympathetic attitude and un-
derstanding on the part of all officials is necessary to
prevent any further misunderstanding or agitation
with regard to milk inspection.
Milk Prices
The State Milk Control Board has raised the
milk in the Atlanta shed four
cents a gallon to consumers, and has raised the price to
be paid to producer-shippers from thirty cents a gallon
to thirty-two cents a gallon for 4.3 milk effective
