Cotton Vote Set for Dec. 7th

All Gorgia farmers who produced cotton in
1940 are eligible to vote in the December th ref-
erendum to determine if cotton marketing quotas
will be in effect for the 1941 crop, Mr. Thomas R.
Breedlove, of Athens, administrative a of the
AAA in Georgia, anngainces.

Mr. Breedlove urges all farmers to vote on the
referendum as to whether or not they want mar-
keting quotas next year, and says further: Hach
1940 cotton producer, whether owner, tenant or
sharecropper, will be entitled to one vote. Two-
thirds of the farmers must vote in favor of market-

ing quotas if they are to be in effect in eas

For Gourd Growers
Mr. Connie N. Watts, of Bald wile, Cans
president of the Dixie Martin-Bluebird Club, re-
quests the Market Bulletin to state thdt he might
assist in the sale of Gourds as he has many requests
for them and growers of Gourds who desire to sell
them are asked to write to him, giving a descrip-_
tion of the Gourds.

Since there are not as many birds as there used
to be, insects are more numerous than they once
were, so anything done to increase the number of
birds will also help to get rid of bugs.

Farm Program to Continue

The re-election of President Roosevelt and the
Democratic ticket in the election of November 5th,
is of especial interest to farmers, because to them it
likely will mean the continuation of the Farm Pro-
gram that has been in effect since 1933.

Two sections of the program affect fe farmers
and the third not only affects them but all other
people as well.

These are the Soil Conservation and Rural
Electrification program, and the third is the guar-
anteed bank deposit law.

_ Jf the Soil saving program is continued it will
re-make the land of the South and will enable the
farmers to reclaim and build up much of their land,

whereby there will be a bigger yield per acre. Toa -
much of our land has washed away and we have |

to cultivate too much land to make our crops.

We need to grow more on less land and to

greatly increase the yield per acre. Georgias eorn

yield is estimated to be 11 bushels an acre, con)- =

pared with 50 bushels in Indiana. Then, too, we
save a lot of work on good land, because a 'tield

of rich land is lots easier cultivated than a poor

field.

A farmer aierage likes to plow the lots close to

the home, because they are usually richer than

the other farm land, and it takes less work for
em.

The Rural Electrification program means that

an ice
box, a radio and other conveniences. It also means =

the farmers can have lights for his home.

he can use electricity for many farm puiposes,

such as a pump in the well and to light and to cool

milk-in the dairy.

About 60,000 farm homes in Georgia now have |

electricity and it is planned to expand the program,
This is truly one of the greatest blessings that has

- ever come to the farm home.
* Guaranteed bank deposits help to pat more 4

money in circulation by all the people, both in the
country and in the cities. because more people pat-

ronize banks by putting money on deposit which
causes it to circulate, rather than be kept at home i:
_ tied up_in a sock or hid in or under the mattress.

Full co-operation with the Government on the
Soil saying plan will enable you to diversify your

crops and build up your land at the same time, the
results of which will soon be noticed in the Hin ky

crease of the yield per acre.

Augusta this week to confer with Richmond county
commissioners on a proposed quarantine against

dogs running at large in the southern section of the
county because of the prevalence of rabies among
foxes in several counties in that area of the state.

A ninety-day quarantine already has been or=_
-dered in Burke, Jefferson and Washington Coun=

ties. During this. period, dogs must be confined to
private property unless immunized againt rabies.

1941 Farm Prospcts

Georgia farmers face prospects for improved domestic de-
mand of farm products and decidedly reduced export outlets for
cotton and tobacco in 1941, the Georgia Agricultural Extension

Service reported this week.

In an outlook report prepared by its specialists for next
year, the Extension Service indicated higher prices for domes-
_tieally consumed food products in 1941, as a result of increased
demand. For some food products, decreased foreign demand or
inereased production may offset the effect of improved domestic

in 1941 than for this year.

Cotton and tobacco, Georgias two most important cash crops
will suffer heavily from loss of export markets coupled with a
probable increase in carryover. For cotton, government loan and
export programs will be the principal price and income support-

demand on prices. Costs of production are expected to be higher

For tobacco, Georgia growers will be faced

with the most serious situation with respect to tobacco stocks on
hand beginning of the 1941-42 marketing season than at any

time since the weed has been a commercial crop in this state.

tlook for other major crops in Georgiamost of which
are domestically consumedappears brighter than for export
commodities. Prospects for these crops follow:
PeanutsExpanded acreage 1941 dueto favorable price this
year, unless some method acreage restriction is devised in con-

nection with diversion program.

The 1940 per-acre yield of

peanuts was one of the highest ever recorded in Georgia.
PeachesIncrease anticipated for planting of early varie-

- ties. Georgia growers are expected to confine plantings to re-

placements of old orchards with a slight addition of new orch-

in other peach-producing areas.
ApplesSevere reduction expected in export outlets, with
possible increased domestic markets to offset foreign sale of

fresh fruits.

_ urged to meet competition caused by greatly increased plantings

Truck CropsLarger income anticipated from both Irish and
sweet potatoes and truck crops in 1941. Increased planting ex-
pected for most of these crops.

Feed CropsSupplies of hay and other forage crops expect-
ed to continue large relative to livestock numbers.

Corn prices

may improve, while oats and barley may average lower during
the first half of 1941 than a year earlier. ;
LivestockAlthough slaughter supplies of livestock in 1941
will be larger than the average recent years, they will be smaller
_ than in 1940. Material reduction in hog marketing and a small
_ decrease in supplies of grain-fed cattle are in prospect. Increase
in number of milk cows on farms expected, and prospects in-
dicated for smaller supplies of poultry and eggs. Stronger con-

sumer demand is in view for chickens, eggs, and turkeys.
In view of these prospects for the year 1941, the Agricultural

Extension Service points out that Georgia farmers would do well.

to continue adjustments now under way on their farms. Exten-

Sion specialists recommended three objectives which seem saf-

est for farmers to carry out in 1941; namely, Greatest possible

production of food and feed need at home, continued increase of

domestically consumed products, and full compliance with AAA

Dock Jones, of Union County, has a formula for success in

and other government programs.

A Success Formula

farming. He says it is made up of four ingredients: Hard work,

common sense, lime and phosphate and legumes. Jones is pro-

ducing crops now on land that formerly did not raise scarcely
_ anything. As a demonstrator on one of the unit farms sponsored

by the Georgia Agricultural Extension Service and the TVA, he
has turned to soil building crops which, aided by applications of

lime. and psosphate, is bringing idle land into profitable soil.
Today he is one of the most progressive farmers in his section
_ and he takes care not to plant soil depleting crops such as corn

on the same strip of land year after year. He has some of the
best pastures in the valley.
