_ EDITORIALBy TOM LINDER
To show just what has happened to the farmers, I: call at-
tention to a tabulation of figures on the back -page of this issue
showing the gross income of farmers, showing the amount of -
gricultural products consumed on the farms which the govern-
ment charges up to the farmers as an income, showing the total
amounts of government benefits paid to the farmers from
1925 to 1929 inclusive, showing the amounts of government
benefits paid to the farmers from 1935 to 1959, inclusive, show-
ing the cash farm income, and showing the national income and
the percentage of national income received by the farmers.
: You will note in Column 4 headed Cash Farm Income
925-1929 that the actual cash returns to the farmers for that
five year period was $10,006,000,000 per year, while in the
same column during the period from 1935-1939 the actual
cash income to the farmers only averaged $5,738,000,000 per
year. : '
It is true that the national income during the same period
fell from an average of $79,217,000,000 during the first period
to an average of $65,039,000,000 during the second period. But
this decrease in national income amounted to only 17%, while
the decrease in income to the farmers amounted to 4807.
Reference to the last column shows that during the first
period the farmer received an average of 12.6 of the national ~
income, while during the last period the farmers received only
8.8 average of the national income. .
If the farmer had received 12.6% of the national income

How Much Louger Can The American Farmer Last At Tia
from 1935 to 1939 as he did in 1925 to 1929 the farmer woul
have received an average per year of $8,194,000,000 instead
$5,738,000,000. This difference amounts to $2,456,000,000 a
year that the farmer lost during the five years from 1935
1939/ | | | ? oS
| $2,456,000,000 a year for five years amounts to a_ grar
total of $12,228,000,000. During the five years from 1935-193
inclusive the farmer has actually lost by operation of the Jaw
of a controlled economy $12,280,000,000. Be
According to statistics of the United States Government the
total farm mortgage debt of the United States amounts to less
than $8,000,000,000. In other words, had the farmer receiv
a fair share of the national income from 1935 to 1939 ev
farm mortgage could have been paid and the farmer woul
have had $4,000,000,000 to spare.
To put it another way, the figures of the government sho
the total value of all farms in the United States to be $14,000
000,000. In five years the farmer lost $12,800,000,000. In fiv
years the farmer lost almost as much money as the total valu
of all farms and nearly twice as much as the aggregate amour
of all farm mortgages.

Poultry ae In Georgia
_ One of the moat interesting live - stock reports:
that comes. over my desk is the report. of Georgia.
Poultry production. The cash income that poultr y
offers is so great in relation to other farm products,
it seems a great pity that 119. of. our. Georgia farms.
do not have a chicken on them.: The pleasing part of).
e picture to me however, is the steady growth of |
important activity.
The present poultry outlook is the brigthest that,
has been for a number of years. The government
3 pegged the prices of eggs and poultry meat for;
the probable duration. of the national emergency, and |
while feed costs are somewhat higher, if hens are,
carefully selected for production the higher average
number of eggs per hen, and the higher prices, make}
a favorable balance for the producer. But there is no
reason why Georgia farmers
prepare their own feed. |
According to information availabie, there are
approximately 8,000,000. hens on Georgia farms but.
a large majority of flocks number less than 50 birds. '
No exact figures on the number of | standard bred.
: ks.in the State are available, put the fact is known |
at a vast improvement in breeding has occurred
rithin the last few years. Most of our hatcheries are,
co ibuting to this improvement of laying flocks: by:
ng hatching. eggs only trom flocks of standard
qualifications, known egg production recor ds, and:
ully selected for production. Be ieee Average
|
Georgia; ae the pure- pred flocks we. see over the
State today. oe
In 1935 the hatching capacity of | ae j 634, 000 f
eggs in the State was under the National Poultry Im-
vement Plan, Today the hatching. capacity of
3,515 eggs representing approximately three-: ~
fourths of the total capacity in the State, is under the
National Poultry Improvement Plan producing Geor-
gia-U.S. Approved and Georgia- U. 83 Certified | baby
chicks. . i
These Approved and Certified. eggs must come
om the farm. Many of our hatcheries are unable
to secure a local supply and are compelled to go out
rf the State for their needs. Most hatcheries willingly
y @ premium over market price eggs of this quality
our Georgia flocks should supply them.: More
fa msevery farmshould have its flock of 100 lay-| on
hens. The income from 100 well bred hens that!
re properly managed, is more than the ouiveleat to
bales of cotton at -12 per pound.
