tect growers on increased acreage. I suggested the
adoption of a ruling that peanut growers would
not be penalized on their other farm benefits on
ecount of an increased acreage in peanuts.
~The Commissioners of Agriculture from the
peanut growing states concurred in the idea aud
ed that this provision be incorporated in the
: a e
At that time the administration refused to;
aecept this provision in Mr. Paces bill.
The Agricultural Administration threatened
-@ abandon the peanut program entirely because
y said it was costing this country ten million
rs a year to earry on the peanut program.
Ata later date the administration did agree,
xt to penalize the peanut grower on additional
oe provided the farmer took as many acres
luctions This ruling did ot noke any change in
he ae picture because it compelled the farm
to cut off as much on his cotton crop as he add-
| to his peanut crop.
Under date of June 23 I saw a news item
om Washington stating that the Agricultural
\di ninistration has now adopted the same ruling
that I proposed on February 24 in Memphis; but
Agricultural Administration waited until
une 23, when it was too late to plant peanuts, be-
re adopting this ruling.
The states of Georgia and Alabama grow
ost of the peanuts that are crushed for oil. In
940 Georgia and Alabama produced 211,000 tons
eanut Oil, while the United States as a whole
duced only 281,000 tons.
We have already shown that the United
izhly one billion pounds. All of this one billion
nds of oil could be supplied by the soy bean
mers of the great corn belt, by the peanut grow-
of the Southeast, and by the cotton farmers
cotton belt.
The wholesale price on oil today is about eley-
n cents per pound, or one hundred and ten million
. This is being taken out of the pocket of
American. farmer to eee oS oils in the
