The new State Farmers Market has been open five days.
uring those five days the business done on this market amount-
to more than $209,000.
This is a considerable increase over the amount of business
done in a like period on the old market.
The markets at Macon, Sylvester, Pelham, Thomasville and
Valdosta are doing exceptionally well.
speed within a few days.
Reports from the markets in southwest Georgia show that
snap beans, squash, Irish potatoes and cabbage are being sold as
ast as they are ready for market.
We are making a special effort right now to move a very
rge crop of onions. Georgia has produced some of the finest
onions this year that I have ever seen, both white and yellow.
- The markets at Thomasville and Valdosta, being older and
better established, have led the field so far. It has been nothing
usual for each of these markets to sell around $3,000 per day.
It should be borne in mind that a very large.proportion of
pass: through the markets.
The market managers send truckers to the fields through-
d the loads paid for. Then these trucks move directly either to
e Atlanta market or to the northern and eastern markets.
I have purchased grading belts for the markets at Thomas-
Lle, Valdosta and Glennville to try out this season. If these belts
prove satisfactory I will purchase grading belts for all of the
arkets another season.
- As soon as we can develop a sufficient volume of graded
d packed vegetables I expect to put the Department of Agri-
Iture labels on each pack and begin building along the line
hat California has already done.
_ There is no reason why we cannot make Georgia products
as famous on the northern and eastern markets as California
oducts have been made.
Everyone coming on the new market in Atlanta speaks with

amazement of its size, its convenience, ad the many moder
surprised at the tremendous volume of business developed from
the very beginning.
This system of State Farmers Markets will solve the mar
keting problems of the farmers of Georgia.
It must be carried forward and wehied) =. This will take
time and money. 4
_All those who are really interested in helene sell the Savas
ers produce should get behind the Department of Agriculture in
developing this system of markets. It is impossible for a local
group of farmers in any county to do a great deal to help them-
selves. The machinery of a great marketing system must be
their disposal.
We have this system. It only needs developing and per-
fecting.
If all agencies of the State and Federal Government whe
are interested in helping the farmer to profitably market his pr
duce will put their shoulders to the wheel and help Uy we |
make this system work much more effectively. :
The great advantage of this State poten system is
obvious.
This State marketing system is independent of any Fed. e
eral control. This State marketing system can give every prefer-
