all the Georgia counties except seven.
The election will be held by you and
your neighbors and all cotton growers are
urged to VOTH, either for or against the

The following statement by Mr. Homer
S. Durden, State Administrator in Georgia
of the AAA, explains some of the features
of the program:

existing immediately before the war.
The Triple-A officer said the
crop in the United States this 2 oe
held to approximately 12 million bales due
to the fact that most farmers cooperated in
the farm program and planted within their
acreage allotments. He also pointed out
that the world carry-over of 14 million
bales of American cotton resulting largely
from the record 19 million bale ee ots
1937 still hangs over the market.
Marketing quotas can be authorized
only when the supply of American cotton
is more than seven per cent above normal,
he said. For 1939-40 the normal supply, ee
as defined by law, would be approximate-_
ly 18 million bales, while the actual sup-
ply is 26 million bales. This is more than
44 per cent above normal. The world
supply of foreign growths of cotton is also
abnormally large.
eorgia Cotton Growers will go a the
on Saturday, December 9th and vote
> aicol plan for 1940.
; I stated recently about the Tobac-
rogram, I now urge upon Georgia
on Growers the importance of voting
convictions in this election. It is

1940 cotton crop or not.
ou alone know if you have been
ted by it in the past and if you
jt continued. Therefore, I suggest,
ou vote your convictions without in-
ice from any source, as you are the
concerned.
t is estimated that there are 170,000
ers eligible to vote on the plan. Last
112,774 votes were cast on the pro-
n for 1939, 88,316 favored the plan
24,458 opposed it. The percentage
ng the plan was 78.3 per cent of the
Farmers normally consider the fac-
tors of supply, carry-over, production and
consumption, Homer 8. Durden, of
Athens, state administrative officer of the
Triple-A says. But a new factorwar
in Europealso must be considered if the
farmers get a true picture of the current
-eotton situation.
Mr. Durden said the best guide the.
farmers have as to what is likely to hap-
pen to cotton-as a result of the European
developments is the experience they had
during the World War. He said most of
them recall the high cotton prices that pre-
vailed during the latter years of the World
War and how cotton lagged behind the
general commodity price level for over
two years after the outbreak of the war.
Just before the opening of hostilities
in 1914, cotton | prices were about 12.5
cents a pound, he said. When the ex-
changes were closed, August 1 to Novem-
ber 17, 1914, prices dropped with the di-
iinighed market to nearly half this level.
It was two full years after the war began

Blue Mold Control in Tobacco
By Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station,
Tifton, Georgia
Spraying tobacco beds with cuprous oxide-cotton-
weed oil emulsion is the most practical method of
controlling blue mold. While it does not give 100
per cent control, it prevents heavy losses and fur-
nishes enough plants in season. The cost ,including
materials and depreciation on a good hand sprayer
varies from $1.50 to $3.50 per hundred yards a year,
depending on materials and prices.
Yellow copper oxide is recommended as super-
ior to red copper oxide and this form: may be pur-
chased as a yellow powder, or made at home from
a simple formula. Vatsol OTC, a white powder, is
superior to Lethane Spreader. Cottonseed oil re-
mains the most practical vegetable oil te use, al-
_ though soybean oil may be substituted.
Materials and Formula for 25 Gallons: _ The
two following formulae are equally effective, but the
--ecst may vary according to the availability of ma-
terials. Use proportionate amounts for mixing other
- quantities. :
: Formula No. 1:
Yellow copper oxide (Cuprocide 54-Y)____6 ounces
Vatsol OTC (or other recom. spreader) _4 ounces
Cottonseed oil (crude or refined)
Wooper 10 Migke oo 25 gallons
Cost $1.76 per 100 gallons based on 1939 prices.
Formula, No. 2:
_ Yellow copper oxide (Cuprocide 54-Y)____6 ounces
Self Emulsifying Cottonseed (SEC) oil______1 quart
Syoter f0 Wace 2 ay 25 gallons
Cost $2.86 per 100 gallons based on 1939 prices.
NOTEThree quarts of home-made yellow
copper solution may be substituted for the 6 ounces
Cuprocide 54-Y in either formula. Also 6 ounces of
Dreft, or 6 ounces of Orvus or one pint of Lethane
Spreader may be substituted for the 4 ounces of
_ Vatsol OTC. Use 6 ounces of Vatsol to 25 gallons in
very hard water. The old formula calling for 4
a: ounces of red copper oxide, one pint of Lethane
Spreader and one quart of oil is somewhat less ef-
fective than the new mixtures. SS
: Directions for Mixing 25 Gallons of Spray:_ (1)
In mixing formula No. 1, stir the Vatsol or other
spreader into a half gallon of water and add the
_. quart of oil. (2) Pump the mixture through the spray:
nozzle several minutes until a milky white emulsion
(8) Add water to bring the volume to
24 gallons. (4) Stir the yellow copper oxide powder
into a gallon of water and pour into the diluted oil
_ emulsion. (5) Hold the nozzle in the spray and
operate the pump several strokes to complete the
mixing. Make only enough for one application at a
time and use immediately.
a In mixing formula No. 2 pour the quart of SEC
oil in a half gallon of water and emulsify in the usual
manner. Dilute with water to bring the volume to
24 gallons and add the yellow copper oxide as de-
scribed above. JS:
c= When and How Often to Spray: Begin spray-
_ing in mild winters soon after the first of February,
especially old beds in areas where mold usually ap-
pears first each-season. Begin before the mold ap-
pears in the bed regardless of size of the plants,
and continue twice a week (Monday and Thursdav) |
_ until the outbreak has passed and the affected plants
_ have started to recover. Apply 2 or 8 gallons per
100 yards each time on plants in the 4-leaf stage, in-
creasing to 5 gallons on plants half large enough to
_ set. Small plants may be sprayed through the cover.
: Two other methods include a Home-made Yel-
_ low Copper Oxide-oil spray or Blue Mold control
which may be made at home on the farm by mixing
bluestone, syrup (molasses), and lye. The other
_. remedy is by the Gas treatment in tight beds covered
= with heavy sheeting.
__ Full information on Blue Mold control methods
_ will be given by the Coastal Plains Experiment Sta-
tion, Tifton, Georgia. _ po a

Electricity on Our Farms
We heard of a couple the other day who, after
many years on their farm, are now beginning to en-
joy the convenience of electric light.
The couple have been married for many years,
with both of them near the four-score mark, but
never before have they been able to press a button
and have light. Now, in their declining years, they
will enjoy the comforts that Electricity can bring to
the farm home.
This scene can be duplicated in hundreds of
homes in Stewart-Webster and Quitman counties
where the past few months witnessed a great exten-
sion of electric service in the rural areas. In contrast
with the news of wars and political campaigns this
revolution in home-life hardly makes the news page
but it is not to be overloked.
Many of us living can well recall the advent of
electricity in our homes. The gradual and increasing
use of electricity has been accompanied by greater
enjoyment of life itself. The conveniences that are
now offered those who make electricity available
make a vast transformation in the work of thrifty
housewives and undoubtedly add much to the com-
{fort of our women.
We do not hesitate to urge all those who can
possibly afford electricity to connect with any avail-
able line. Not only will there be more light, but
there will be easier work, a-more balanced life and
improved living conditionsFrom Stewart-Webster
Journal.
Exterminate Rats to End Typhus
Typhus fever is a major health problem in Geor-
gia, Dr. T. F. Abercrombie, director of the Georgia
Department of Public Health, warned in stressing rat
control work slonsored by his department.
Typhus fever has been on the increase in this
state for a number of years, there having been no
decrease shown until 1938, when the State Health
Department completed its first years typhus control
program, he said. :
Since typhus is spread by rats and the rat flea,
control of typhus resolves into the control of rat
breeding through extermination, by poison, rat
proofing of buildings and adequate garbage collec-
tion
Farm buildings may be largely rid of rats by
being built or raised off of the ground, from two to
three feet high. Pieces of tin or old large dish
pans placed on top of the pillars will keep the rats
from climbing into buildings and they cannot burrow
under buildings where dogs and hogs run. *
Gully Control Bulletin
Georgia farmers trying to check growth of field
gullies and bring gullied areas into productive use
will find helpful information in a new farmers
bulletin just issued by the U. 8. Department of Agri-
culture. J. M. Jordan, soil conservationist for the
Georgia Extension Service, says the bulletin pre-
scribes treatment for gullies based primarily on their
depth and the size of the contributing drainage areas.
For small gullies of less than three feet in depth,
comparatively simple controls are recommended.
The publication points out, however, that large
gullies and those with extensive drainage areas
usually can be stabilized only by using a combination
of protective measures. The bulletin, entitled Pre-
vention and Control of Gullies, was prepared by H.
G. Jepson, of the Soil Conservation Service. It may
be obtained from the U. S. Department of Agricul-
i ture, Washington, D. C. 2 S
