: ommissioner Roberts Seeks Higher Cotton Seed Price

loves To Get Better Prices for Products.

Commissioner Columbus Roberts attended a

ting held August 15-16, in New Orleans. by
Commissioners of Agriculture of the South-
States for the purpose of taking some action
ward the farmers receiving a-higher price for
tton Seed and Pecans. Zo
The group urged the necessity for immediate
ion by Secretary Wallace to make known the
icy to be followed with respect to Oils and
ats to be effective in improving the price. of
Cotton Seed. : :
Among the things urged by the Commissioners
o help raise the price of Cotton Seed were that
he Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation
ake off the market for relief purposes Fats and
il products, equivalent to 100,000,000 pounds of

Also that an agreement be made with the
ckdrs whereby the premium price on light
ht hogs be continued, which would have
he effect of reducing the quantity of lard now in
rospect from the present pig crop at least
50,000,000 pounds. ;
The Commissioners said they believed the im-
rtation of foreign fats and oils is seriously af-
ng the farm program and urged an investiga-
of this by the Tariff Commission and impo-
ion of quotas to protect domestic producers, if
found that these importations are keeping
al prices down. rae
War Department was asked to buy not Jess
1n 350,000 bales of second cut linters to be
red for national defense purposes.
Saying that the income from Pecans in this coun-
, is seriously hurt by imports of foreign nuts,

Congress was urged to protect the local nut industry
from further imports of foreign nuts.

Commissioner Roberts, on his return to his office,

expressed the hope that better prices will be paid

to Georgia and Southern farmers for their Cotton

Seed and Nuts.

The resolutions adopted by the Commissioners at
New Orleans were as follows: *

The necessity for immediate action by the Sec-
retary of Agriculture to make known the policy to
be followed with respect to oils and fats to be effec-

_ tive in improving the price of cottonseed to produc-

ers is so imprative that we, the Association of
Southern Commissioners of Agriculture, assembled
in New Orleans, Louisiana, August 15, 1939, hereby
urgently request Secretary Henry A. Wallace to im-
mediately announce a program.

_ We recommend and urge that such program in-
clude the following:

1. Announce immediately that existing corn

surpluses and crop prospects warrant the statement
that there would definitely be a corn loan equal to
seventy per cent of parity, which loan would be-
come mandatory and be announced in November, as
prescribed by the statute. . =
9 Announce immediately that the Federal Sur-
plus Commodities Corporation will take off the

southern designated markets today was 8.72 cents

market for relief purposes fats and oil products the
equivalent of at least 100,000,000 pounds of lard, th
removal of these products to be by epen market
purchases, er eae the season. BSD
3. Immediately affect an agreement with pa
ers to maintain price premiums being paid for li
weight hogs, and increase this premium to such
extent as may be.found necessary to justify farm

in cutting down on feed, and in sending their hogs
into the market fifteen to twenty-five pounds under
normal weight. Normal slaughter weight of hogs
the commercial area is approximately 232 pound:
each. The meat from the light weight hogs ha:
premium over meat from the extra fat hogs. It
this premium is sufficiently widened,-and the an=
nouncement made that it will be maintai

_ through the season, it is thought that the lard fr

the pig crop now in sight would be reduced below
the estimate new in effect to the extent of a

least 250,000,000 pounds. is

Commissioner Roberts Seeks Higher
Cotton Seed Prices

(Continued from Page One)

Aiea commodities be exercised with respect to oils and fats
to the extent necessary to relieve the present and prospective
burdensome surpluses.

6. That because of the importation of 996,393,000 pounds
of oils and fats during the first six months of 1939, according to
Government figures, we believe that the importation of foreign
oils and fats is seriously affecting the farm program, and there-
. fore urge that the Secretary of Agriculture urge an investigation
_by the Federal Tariff Commission to determine whether or not
-the importations of foreign oils and fats are seriously interfering
~ with the farm program, and if so, that the powers of the Presi-
dent under Section 22 of the Agricultural Adjustment Act may
be invoked by the imposition of quotas to protect momeste pro-
ducers of such oils and fats.

Resolution No. 2

In view of the importance of by-products such as cotton
inters in the price which can be paid to producers for cotton-
seed; and that the price of seed is now at a disastrously low
level; and that cotton linters are an important item in prepared-
ness for national defense, we, the Association of Southern Com-
missioners of Agriculture, assembled in New Orleans, Louisiana,
August 15, 1939, urge that the War Department announce that
they will buy not less than 350,000 bales of second cut linters, |
ae will be stored for the national defense.

Resolution No. 3
IM view of the fact that the Pecan Industry is an important

F:

of the nation; and that the income from this industry has been
seriously jeopardized by the importations of foreign nuts, we,
the Association of Southern Commissioners of Agriculture, as-
-sembled in New Orleans, La., August 15, 1939, recommend and
urge that the Congress provide such measures as will adequately
protect the industry from the disastrous consequences of such
- importations.

Honey Show

Commissioner Roberts announces that the Marketing di-
vision of the Department of Agriculture will observe Honey
Week beginning September 4th, and that a Honey Show will
be held during the week at the Farmers Market on Glen Iris
Drive. Atlanta.

. The show will be for the purpose of acquainting the people
with the different kinds and flavors of honey and to boost Geor-
gia honey generally as a food. .

According to the State Entomologist there are 207,000 colo-
nies of bees in Georgia, valued at $1,552,500.00, which give the
tate an annual income of $829,500.00. For Honey we get

me

- $56,250.00; from sale of Bees, $140,000.00.

-_ Georgia produces much honey and in addition, many bees
are sold to northern states that have trouble in keepnig bees
through the winter. Georgia is the second state in the South
in the shipment of bees to other states.
