ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 24, 1933.

NUMBER 34.

Prices of Live Stock

There is a great need right now for some action to-

ards getting prices improved on hogs and cattle. Market
uotations today (August 18th) on No. 1 mix fed hogs
3 3-4 cents per pound, cattle from 4 to 4 1-2 cents per
ound for the best steers and 1 1-4 to 1 3-4 cents for can-
ers and cutters. It takes the very best mix fed hogs to
bring 3 3-4 cents, reer ounine to todays quotation) and
teer that will grade a medium must be fed one hun-

d days on a ration equivalent or superior to cotton
seed meal and hulls. On January Ist, 1933 cotton seed
meal was being sold for an average of $15.00 to $16.00
per ton F. O. B. mills and loose hulls quoted at $5.00 per
ton. On January 4th, the Moultrie Market quotations ona
medium grade steer was 4 1-2 cents per pound. On
gust 15th, 1933 the mills quoted me cotton seed meal

: from $26.00 to $30.00 per ton, loose hulls at $10.00 to
0.50 per ton F. O. B. mills. You can see by this that

ttle was bringing as much when this feed was $15.00 |

$16. per ton for meal and $5 per ton for hulls, as they
e now selling for with prices of this feed having doub-
led since January Ist.

Hog prices have advanced from the lowest price in
ars of 2 1-2 cents for mix fed hogs to4 cents. This
rice of 4 cents is stilla very low price and it is very hard

for a farmer to raise hogs at this figure and he is not |

helped materially by this 1 1-2 cents advance, when you : ; .
take into consideration the advance in the prices of feeds |

_which many of the farmers had to pay to carry their stock |
through the summer and the fact that. all pork products |

have just doubled i in price.

i

Live stock raising bec one of this states principal indus-
tries, and as efforts are being made to raise the prices on

some of our principal crops, it certainly is important that |
steps be taken now before the season begins to do some-_ | :
thing for the live stock raisers. It is just as necessary that |
the farmer receives a fair price for his hogs and cattle, |

as it is for him to receive a fair price for his cotton and
wheat. Q

a

Packers want to grade hogs on quality instead of As

weight. They say a farmer who raises good hogs is penal-_ 4 7
ized because of the other fellow who raises poor quality |
hogs. I dont know about this, but I will say if heis penal- |

ized and it will bring the farmers more money for hogs _

_ by grading on quality, I say grade on quality, if not, then

continue to grade by weight, as has been done in the past. |
