STATE CAPITOL _ ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 6, 1933. NUMBER 27.

A WORD ABOUT COMPLAINTS AND COTTON
, _ ALLOTMENT PLAN a

ME 16.

28

_I have called attention a number of times to our friends, who use the
olumns of the Market Bulletin for the sale of their farm Products, to tne
nportance of shipping exactly what they carry for sale in their notices 1n
he Bulletin, and I am glad that there has been a great improvement in the
uality of products shipped and in the grading and packing of same in the
past few months, but there is still room for great improvement. I want those
who use our columns to know that it is a great privilege to have the free use
hese columns for the sale of their farm products, but unless the purehas-
is satisfied, it greatly reduces the value of Our publication. I have com-
ts every week from people who order various articles through items car-

ed in the Bulletin and they complain about the quality of the products re-
ved. Only a few days ago, I had a letter from a large farmer in middle
orgia, who ordered 5,000 tomato plants from a South Georgia farmer
hrough an item carried in the Builetin and he wrote me that these plants
iad been tied in bunches of about three inches diameter. The plants were

ore than a foot long with the leaves dead and roots entirely dry, having ~

een packed closely in a corrugated paper carton without moss or Other mat-
er to keep them damp. These plants had been through and were still very
hot when received and he advised that they were worthless and an inspect-
on showed that they were very badly infested with root knot and he was
bliged to destroy the entire lot.

_ The Bulletin belongs to the people of Georgia and is maintained and op-
rated for their benefit, and it is my desire for iti to be of the most Service
ossible to the people who raise products for sale, and I appeal to the tarm-
'S oo a its columns to help me make it one of the best publications in the
nited States... ;

From all reports coming into this office, the Cotton Allotment Plan adop-

1 by the Secretary of Agriculture in Washington will go strong in Georgia,

ind my information is from the other states that the required number of ac-
2s will be plowed up to insure the plan being put into effect.

The efforts of the Department of Agriculture to Stabilize the dairy in-

y in this state has up to this point met with unprecedented success.

his has been due largely to the cooperation that the Department has re-

/

ceived from all branches of the industry and it is now apparent that the con-
suming public will look with favor upon the efforts of the Department and
others interested to stabilize this business that means so much to the health
and welfare of the people of this State. cone

The trade agreement submitted to the Secretary of Agriculture due to
the press of detail and the enormous amount of work that has been almost

over night thrown upon them necessarily has delayed for a rew days the Oi-

ficial action in placing the agreement into effect under federal supervision.

. There is no doubt in the minds of those in this Department who have
been connected with the movement from its inception that the adgreement
wil be placed into effect with all the provisions of law as provided for in the
Farm Relief Act. :

This Department now calls upon the consuming public and the dealers,
both the chain stores, restaurants, hotels, drug stores, soda fountains, and
all other people interested in this votal commodity to lend their support to
oe a success the agreement that will be placed into effect by the dairymen
omorrow.

It has been the duty of this Department to| protect the consuming pub-

lic against an undue increase in the price they pay for mMuUk. The retail

price set out in the schedule will not be any higher than they haveibeen dur-

ing periods of the depression, in fact, they are in line with the price the con-
suming public was paying fifteen months ago and it has been due to the de-.
moralizing conditions of the industry that the consumer has been reaping
the reward of starvation prices that bids fair, unless corrected immediately, to
take out of the industry approximately 100 dairymen in the Atlanta Area.
Their farms and their cows will be sold, their equqipment will be repossessed
by the manufacturer and they are entitled to a living price for their commod-
ity. Se aoe

In line with the appeal of the President for a reconstructed industry, one

that might be placed upon a living basis, we make the appeal to the people

of Atlanta and, Georgia to support this campaign and not to allow any Selr-
ish interest to interfere therewith. ae

7/3/33 MAX L. McRAE, Director.
