AGRICULTURE.
COMM ISSIONER:

PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES, DIRECTOR.

STATE CAPITOL

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1931

The Last of he Mohicans

Last week I told you of the different interests in this
country that were successful in building up sentiment to
prohibit the publication of any editorials in the Market Bul-
etin. This was brought about. by a rider in the Appropria-
tion Bill in the last session of the Legislature.

This rider in the Appropriation Bill provided that nothing |

hall go into the Market Bulletin except advertisements for
farm products, It further provided if any other matter ap-
peared in the Market Bulletin except advertisements of
oducts for sale and wanted, that the Governor should not
onor a warrant for the publication of the Bulletin.

The Bulletin serves a good purpose to the farmers of the
tate in helping them to sell, exchange, and buy products.
I do not want to jeopardize this medium of exchange by

ttempting to put other matter in it that would cause the

thholding of the warrant to pay for the Bulletin.

You will continue to get the Market Pe containing

advertisements only.

I think that the law creating the Bureau of Markets and
he Department of Agriculture provided for articles by the
ommissioner of Agriculture on matters of agricultural in-
erest. I thought the best way and the cheapest way to get
hese to the farmers was by publishing them in the Market
ulletin.

I explained to you last week in detail why the oe

vere discontinued.
I also told you last week that I would let you know where
he editorials would be published in the future.

-The Southern Cultivator will carry my editorials every two

oe eens.
__ Following is a copy of a letter that I received: from the
Southern Cultivator, together with my reply:

December 21, 19381.
on. Eugene minedsk
Commissioner of Agriculture,
State Capitol Bidg.,
Atlanta, Ga.
- Dear Mr. Talmadge:
We note from a current news item that a decision made by

the Sitoreey general will deprive you of the privilege of pub- _
lishing editorial matter in The Market Bulletin,

Whether that refers to controversial matters or to con- He
structive measures advocated by the Department of Agri-
culture, is not clear; but certainly the farmers of the State
are entitled to know the views of the departments chief on |

farming methods and practices that are so essential to a =
prosperous agriculture. bas

The Southern Cultivator is published for the aol purpose
of securing direct contact with the farmers of Georgia and

the southeast that it may carry to them the advantages to be |
derived from diversified farming, livestock and poultry rais-_

ing, dairying, soil building and soil conservation; better home _
conditions, extension of gardening and furtherance of the
live-at-home program.

As you are denied the privilege of advising the carne of

the State along constructive lines in The Market Bulletin, 4 :
we invite you to make use of the columns of The Southern =

Cultivator for this purpose. We may, or may not, agree with

_ your views, but as the head of the state department dealing =

with farming conditions, your opinion on agricultural con-

ditions will be of interest, and we accordingly invite you to

use these columns for that purpose.
Sincerely,
THE SOUTHERN" CULTIVATOR.

Gentlemen: :
I accept the offer of The Souther Cultivator to carry my

messages to the people on condition that I write exactly what _
I please.

Tam not expecting The Cultivator to agree with me in what
I write. There may appear other matters in The Cultivator
with which I may take issue.
Another reason that I accept the offer of The Southern
Cultivator is that its subscription rate for one year is 25
as Sec on Page Eight).
