STATE CAPITOL
Last Friday, September 25, Hon. Harry D. Wilson, Commissioner
of Agriculture of Louisiana; Hon. J. W. Shealy, Commissioner of
Agriculture of South Carolina, and I met here in Atlanta with rep-
resentatives of most of the oil mills in the State of Georgia. We were
interested in the proper trade on cottonseed for meal.
Two of the largest oil mill companies of the state first agreed to
exchange even, giving a pound of 7 per cent cottonseed meal for a
pound of prime cottonseed. After the two largest led off, the other
oil mills agreed on the same plan.
Cottonseed have been selling for various low prices in the state for
the past several weeks. The lowest I heard of was from some farmers
from Statesboro, who came in the office yestrday. They said that
seed were selling at Statesboro for $5 a ton. Of course, this is a
- ridiculous give-away price.
My suggestion to you is to take the matter up with the oil mill
nearest you and see if you can perfect an even trade. If you can,
carry your seed to the oil mill and get the meal. If they do not have
the meal on hand they will give you a certificate and you can get
_ the meal later. If your nearest oil mill will not make this even trade
with you, write me and I will advise you where you can get this
exchange.
Ido not have to tell the farmers what to do with cottonseed meal.
~ Most of them know that it is extremely good feed for cattle. A little
cottonseed meal mixed with slop and corn meal is fine for fattening
oe Be particular and not put too much cottonseed meal in the
mixture.
Of course, you know that cottonseed meal is about the best fer-
- tilizer of any one ingredient that we have. It analyzes approxi-
mately 2-5-2."
-- Clemson College, South Carolina, made experiments with a great
many fertilizer materials and obtained the best results under cotton
with cottonseed meal used as the only fertilizer. I have tried cotton-
seed meal on sugar cane and sweet potatoes and find that it is the
- best fertilizer that I can use. Cottonseed meal put to corn about
: If you are going
to use cottonseed meal only under cotton, I would advise bedding on
the meal about a week or ten days before you plant your cotton. If
you use about 400 pounds of cottonseed meal to the acre under cotton
you will find that you will make a good crop of cotton. :
At present writing it seems that no law will be passed affecting

What About the Following?
the planting of cotton in Georgia next year. This being the case, the
following is prescribed: Make as much as possible of what you have
to use at home and then as much cotton as you can without going
into debt. This cottonseed meal trade is a good way for the farmer
to get his fertilizer for next year. If you have the money and can
buy some dcid phosphate to mix with the cottonseed meal, you need
not worry about any more fertilizer. This is as good as any.
Now is the time to begin planting wheat.
Georgia. We made a good crop of wheat in Georgia this past sum-
mer. Lets everyone try to have a wheat patch. You can get good
seed wheat at various prices.
The best wheat field I saw growing this year was that of Gunn
and Goolsby at Monticello. They have perfected a variety of wheat
that is far superior to the average Blue Stem variety that we have

- been growing in Georgia. They are asking $3.25 per bushel for this
seed wheat. It might be a good idea for you to get some of this
wheat and get the seed of it. as it is a remarkable producer. I would
not advise anyone to buy too many bushels, but buy enough to get in
the rand, of it. They have only a limited supply of this seed wheat

I have a good many iin from people over the state wanting to
know if there is a law in regard to hogs dying of cholera and being ~
left around unburied or not burned. Of course, such a practice as if
this only spreads the disease. I looked this up and find the follow-
ing to be the law: Fae
Section 485, Vol. 2, of the Code of 1911.
Tf a domestic animal or domestic fowl should die without the
incorporate limits of a town or city of this state, and the owner
thereof shall fail or refuse to bury the carcass, deep enough to pre-
vent stench therefrom, within three hours after notice of death and
location of the carcass, he shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.
When any of your domestic animals or fowls die, burn them up or {|
bury them. This not only protects your neighbors stock and fowls
but protects your own. \

HOW TO TREAT BEANS AND
PEAS FOR WEEVILS | y
Weevils may be killed in storage
by fumigation with carbon disuyl<
drocyanic-acid gas.
Fumigation with carbon disulphide
is one of the simplest remedies for |
weevils, because the gas is heavier
than air and evaporates more quick-
ly if a large surface of the liquid is
exposed to the air. The liquid should
be poured out into shallow pans or ~
dishes and placed upon the top of
the seeds to be fumigated. Seeds will _
not be injured or poisoned if the
liquid is sprinkled or poured directly
upon them. |
Carbon disulphide gas is explosive
and inflammable if fire is brought
close to it during fumigation. Seeds _
to be fumigated should be placed in
an airtight container, preferably a
barrel lined with heavy paper or a
galvanized-iron garbage can. Carbon
disulphide should be used at the rate
of from 4 to 20 pounds to each 1,000
cubic feet of space to be fumigated.
The liquid should be poured over the
top of the seeds to be fumigated or
poured into shallow dishes set on top
of the seeds. Fumigation should con-
tinue from 24 to 48 hours.
Fumigation with carbon disulphide
on at or above a temperature of 75
peratures below 60 degrees F. After
fumigation the seeds should he ex-
amined occasionally and given a sec<
ond or third fumigation in case liv-
ing weevils are found. Used accord=
ing to directions it will not injure
thoroughly dry seeds or affect their
value for food as the disagreeable
odor passes away after the seeds
have been aired.
ADVICE TO POULTRYMEN A
All male birds should be removed
from the flock as soon as the breed-
ing season is over, as they are not
necessary for the production of in-
fertile eggs. :
Many people believe that male
birds must be kent with the hens and
pullets to secure eggs. This, however,
is untrue, for just as many eggs will
be gotten where no cock birds are
present. E. H. KINNEBREW,
State Bureau of Markets.

companies who will pay you cash prices for pecans. :
