Inc., Richmond, Va., watermelon dealers, has been re-
voked by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, acting
under authority of the Perishable Agricultural Com-
modities Act.
It seems that among other things, Burton & Briel,
Inc., colleeted a loss and damage claim of $35.00 on
a car of watermelons shipped by Mr. J. H. Allen, of
Fort Valley.. Burton & Briel, Inc., failed to credit or
_ pay over to the shipper any part of the $35.00.
Melon growers should investigate thoroughly all
commission merchants who solicit their shipments. If
you are ever in doubt, write me and I will let you know ce
about the reliability. of the various commission mer- oe

THE ADVANTAGES OF PUREBRED CATTLE

(1) ScrubGrade Sires vs Purebred Sires. fa
In a test conducted the past winter at Oklahoma A. & M., Col-
lege at Stillwater, using Scrub and Purebred Sires on Scrub Dams ~
the results secured demonstrate clearly the economical superiority of
the Purebred Sires over the Scrub Sire when used on the same Kind
of Scrub Cows. The table following gives the details: os

Grain to produce 100 pounds of gain (86 pounds less grain) and
cheaper cost of 100 lbs. gain. ($1.32 Less cost of 100 pound gain).
Another survey made by the, Okla. A. &.M, College shows that
the selling price of cows by purebred Hereford Sires average $62.50,
yearlings $52.85 and calves $31.25. Cows by Grade Bulls averaged
$49.00, yearlings, $34.00 and Calves $25.65. These figures show that
cows by purebred bulls brought 27.5 per cent more than those of.
grades, yearlings 52.5 per cent
those by grade bulls. ;
These same figures would hold true any day on any central live-
stock market in the Stocker & Feeder Division. Price quotations
range from $4.00 to $8.00 depending upon the quality. Take two
steers of the sameweight (500 pounds) for example, one selling at _
more and calves 22 per cent more
- $5.50 per cwt. or $27:50 per head, the other selling at $7.50 or $37.50
per head or a difference of $10.00 per steer. This amount is very |
- conservative but shows the value of the use of good sires. If 100 A
cows were kept, it would make a difference of. $1000.00 in return to ._
say nothing about the difference in weight of the two calves at the
same age. The difference is due to quality. Quality is the result.
of the use of good purebred sires. Feeders are demanding good
quality calves to put in their feed lots. : :
Good Breeding Pays Dividends oe
Compared with Scrubs, Wellbred Beef Steers:
(1). Make more rapid gain than Scrub steers.
(2). Mature earlier. a ;
(3). Furnish a higher percentage of dressed carcass.
(4).. Produce a greater proportion of more valuable cuts of meat.
(5). Have less internal fat. eee
(6). Yield a carcass having a higher quality of meat. . S

(2) Inferior Type of Purebred Sire
There are many justifiable planes of beef cattle production. The oF
plane that a breeder is on will depend upon the type and quality of _
females he maintains. The breeder with the choice breeding herd
secure. Likewise the breeder with an ordinary herd of females
should only use the best type of bulls that is possible for him to secure
under his system of management and operating conditions. If such
a practice is followed the results will be a gradual grading up of the
cow herd by keeping the best heifers produced each year for replace-
( Today there are too many farmers and breeders who are letting
price alone determine the type and kind of Purebred Sire that they _
his qualities on a large number of calves each year. If he is a bull
of the right kind he will transmit his likeness to his offspring. If |
he is a bull of an undesirable type these same undesirable qualities
will likewise be found in his calves. It has often been said that a
good bull is half the herd and that a scrub bull or inferior bull is
the.whole herd. The factors that should be taken into consideration
in addition to price in the buying of a bull or type, smooth covering
of natural flesh, individuality and quality. One should not let a
few dollars stand in his way in the purchasing of a good Hereford |
Bull whether it be of use on purebred cows or grades for the pro- 4
duction of beef. The good type Hereford Bull is the cheapest in. Jf
