HE CO.OPS FINAL SETTLEMENT WITH H. G. MATHIS, VALDOSTA, GA.,

Do be 4, HIS SIX BALES OF COTTON

Last week, there were some farmers in the office from Gwinnett
County, who told me that the field representatives of the Co-ops were
going around, telling that H. G. Mathis, of Valdosta, Ga., whose letter

was published in the Market Bulletin on April 16th, was perfectly sat-_

isfied with his final settlement on his six bales of cotton. The same
day that these farmers from Gwinnett County told me this, I received

- information on just how the optional pool is operated and why the As-
sociation uses the provisional settlement plan and we would appreciate
your reading the same carefully. It is the purpose of the Association __
to operate the optional pool on a basis such that optional pool mem-

fully. We also received your order to sell your cotton and your instruct- =

_jons have been complied with and we are enclosing herewith provisional

settlement on the same. Check for $5.45, the amount due at this time
on the cotton, has been mailed to Mr. J. D, McKey, Valdosta, Ga., in
accordance with an assignment that you gave to Mr. McKey. i

__ At the close of the season when final settlement is made by the As-
sociation on all cotton a final settlement will be made with you and |
other members shipping to the optional pool who have ordered their
cotton sold. Whatever is due you of the one cent per pound withheld
We are enclosing a statement which gives

less than seasonal] pool members for overhead expenses. It would seem

that that is a fair way for the member and a sound plan for their or- _ Ek

ganization. : g Reel
_ In the seasonal pool this season. approximately ninety percent of
the market value at the time of delivery has been advanced to members

without the necessity of his putting up margin in case of a market de-- hs: 4
has not been the plan with the optional pool because as

cline. That
you know the member controls or rather has the right to say when the

price shall be fixed on his cotton. Due to. conditions only about five a:

percent of all cotton delivered to the Association has been put in the

optional pool this season. That means that around 225,000 bales have

been delivered by the members to the seasonal pool. It has not been
necessary to call but a very, very few members for margin who shipped |

to the optional pool because the Association did not advance as much ce
as seven cents and seven and a half cents per pound at the time of de- __
A few members

_ did draw this amount at the very beginning of the season; but shortly

after we began receiving cotton the advance on optional pool cotton
was changed. es Z ee 5 aie

Again we wish to say that we would like to point out that a final
settlement has not been made on your cotton and will not be made until =

_-the endof the season. ; ee
c We would suggest that you discuss this matter again with our field
representative and others with whom you talked about co-operative

marketing before you sign up in the Association. We feel that a lack es
of information and understanding on your part is the only cause of any

differences between you and the Association. It is frequently true of |
the worst dissatisfied member of the Association that he becomes the
best pleased member when he fully informs himself. We have no rea~ _
son to believe but that this would be the case with you were all of the

- facts before you. | ; : :

TILIZING CORN AND COTTON
LLOWING WINTER LEGUMES

Many farmers who have winter le-
es, such as vetch and Austrian
eas, to turn under for fertilizing corn
cotton are thinking about the ad-

: ility of using commercial fertiliz-
rs along with the green manure. The
al problem of what kind, how

ch, and when to apply the fertilizer
fter peas and vetch should be solved
ith the help of all available informa-

1. The Georgia Experiment Station |

been conducting experiments with
izer for crops which were planted

ter legumes were turned under and

iis article is a brief summary of the
results to date. ; -

Corn: The results where corn has
owed the winter legume show that
well fertilized green manure crop or
reen manure crop planted on good

will usually supply all the fertil-
needed for corn, especially where
legume crop yields from 5,000 to
00 pounds of green material per
e. Poorer yields of the manuring

9s should be supplemented with.

ommercial nitrogen. aS
Cotton: Green manure crops for cot-
should be turned under at least
eeks before the usual planting
egardless of the amount of
wth made up to that time. The
d and amount*of fertilizer to use
jer cotton will depend largely on

oil conditions.

Cotton and corn following winter le-
nes should be seeded in carefully
ared beds and at higher rates than

no cover crop is grown.

e three year study shows an aver-:

yield of 1009 pounds of seed cotton
acre after vetch without nitrate of
and 1042 pounds from 200 pounds

trate of soda without vetch. Potash

MARKET BULLETIN

and phosphates were applied in equal
amounts.
were applied at planting after turning
under the vetch an increase of 31
pounds, of seed cotton was obtained.
This increase was not enough to pay
for the soda, but it is possible that a
smaller amount of readily available ni-
trogen at planting might pay.

The practice of turning under winter
legumes for soil improvement will not
replace the use of all commercial fer-
tilizers, especially potash and phos-
phates, as green manuring with le-
/gumes adds only. nitrogen and organic
matter to the soil.

CATTLE FEEDERS DAY.
AT MOULTRIE, MAY

Interesting Feeding Experiments to Be Concluded |
By Georgia Experiment StationChamber of
Commerce Arranges Program Boosting

Beef Production Prominent
: Speakers Listed _

Experiment, Georgia, April 22, 1931.An interesting series of ex-
periments is being carried on by the Georgia Experiment Station of |

_ Experiment, Georgia to study certain feeds for fattening beef steers
under Georgia conditions. These experiments are being carried on ~
- at Moultrie which is one of the leading centers in the Southeast in

: Day will be held at Moultrie at
which time the test will be concluded. Among prominent speakers
expected to appear on the program are Senator Wm. J. Harris, Con-
gressman E. E. Cox, Hon. L. L. Moore, and Mr. H. McDowell of Moul- |
The Moultrie Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Experi- _
ment Station invite the public to attend, especially farmers, cat-
tlemen, county agents, and agricultural teachers and their students.

In these experiments two problems are receiving special study. |f -
The first of these is to determine what effects are produced by sub- |}
stituting different amounts of blackstrap feeding molasses for corn
in the fattening ration. The second aim of the experiments is to
compare Georgia white corn with western yellow corn as a fattening
In these studies the Experiment Station is using 50
head of steers of beef breeding; which were about 15 months of age
at the start of the tests and which averaged about 600 pounds in

These animals are divided_into five uniform groups kept and 106
separately in different lots. Equal amounts of cottonseed meal and
hulls are fed to the cattle in each of the five lots. The cottonseed

~ meal is used to supply protein in the ration. The hulls are used for.
the roughage they furnish. All lots have free access to a mineral

L Lots 1 and 2 are each fed a full ration of corn, Lot 1 re-
ceiving Georgia white corn and Lot 2 an. equal amount of western
yellow corn. A comparison between these two lots indicates the
differences between the two kinds of corn. Lot 3 receives three-
fourths as much of the yellow corn as Lot 2 and the remaining
fourth is supplied as molasses; Lot. 4 receives one-half as much yel-

low corn as Lot 2 and the remaining half as molasses.
son between Lots 2, 3, and 4 indicates the results of substituting mo-
lasses for part of the corn in the ration. Lot 5 receives a full ration
of velvet beans in pods arid crab grass hay. ;

The results for the frst 84 days of this test show that the animals
have made average daily gains per steer as follows:
Oto ee
Obs 2 ee
LOU S22 ee
TiOb Age ee SE
PiG= 0. eee ee ee 8
_ , These gains seem to indicate that the Georgia white corn which
is being used is somewhatmore efficient as a fattening feed, pound
for pound, than is the western yellow corn. They also indicate that.
_the substitution of molasses for corn, in the proportions used, lowers
the rates of gain. The velvet beans and hay, while producing good
gains, do not show up as well as the corn. The above results are
not final as-the experiments will not be finished until early in May.
On May 12 the cattle will be placed on exhibit and the final results
given out and recommendations made based on the facts obtained.

Gentlemen:

The Co-ops Final Settlement With H. G,
Valdosta, Ga., On His Six
Bales of Cotton

ee a (Continued from page one) -
(COPY OF LETTER FROM _H. G. MATHIS, VALDOSTA, GA.,

Georgia Cotton Growers Co-op ASssn.,

; At your request I have carefully read your unsigned explanation on
the handling and selling of my six bales of cotton, but there is one thing
that you left out in all your document, and that was you failed to ex-_
plain how a farmer was to profit by turning his cotton over to you. _
~ When I have taken a loss of $69.20 on six bales of cotton weighing
2959 lbs., up to date, I am sorry-for any man who works ten months in_
the year to make and gather a cotton crop, and then ships it away to
people that he knows nothing about, and expects them to get or give
him more money for it than he-could have gotten at home from his
My advice to him is to sell it at his home market, re-
gardless of the price, because he has just as much influence with the
New York exchange as you have, and he can get just as much as you
can for it, and save you expense, which would be a neat little sum if
they all get settlements as I have. . ee es a
I was informed that our cotton went from the Grower to the mills
through the Association, cutting out the middle mans profit, and I guess
it does, based on New York prices, via your handling charge, which will
ruin any man that will keep it up. I es have held my cotton and
sold it on the same day you Sold it, and s
insist that your method of handling cotton will do any more than make
beggars in the country, providing he tries to make cotton for a living,

and turns it over to you to sell for him?

You will note that the Co-ops have deducted from this mans six
bales of cotton one cent per pound as a provisional settlement, and also
1 percent as a reserve fund. I looked on the reverse side in reference
to this provisional settlement, and here is what it says: WHEN FINAL ~
SETTLEMENT IS BEING MADE ON SEASONAL POOL COTTON A
FINAL SETTLEMENT WILL BE MADE ON OPTIONAL, POOL COT- |
TON BY PAYING EACH MEMBER WHATEVER REMAINS OF THE

A check was made out for $5.45, the amount listed above, as the

mean, that at the end of the season he will be paid so much of this 1

the Co-ops want to pay him something. When the check for $5.45 was
cashed, all rights to the 1 cent per pound were waived. aoe
_ Can the farmers of Georgia stand for $50.70 being deducted for
handling six bales of cotton. Did you ever hear of a SPECULATOR >
