! 2 DEPARTMENT Of J EUGENE TALMADGE PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES, DIRECTOR. _ STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 1981. HE CO.OPS FINAL SETTLEMENT WITH H. G. MATHIS, VALDOSTA, GA., Do be 4, HIS SIX BALES OF COTTON Last week, there were some farmers in the office from Gwinnett County, who told me that the field representatives of the Co-ops were going around, telling that H. G. Mathis, of Valdosta, Ga., whose letter was published in the Market Bulletin on April 16th, was perfectly sat-_ isfied with his final settlement on his six bales of cotton. The same day that these farmers from Gwinnett County told me this, I received the following: es tree : EO ge LETTER FROM MR. H. G. MATHIS, VALDOSTA, GA.; TO | eS aS _. It is the purpose of the Association __ to operate the optional pool on a basis such that optional pool mem- bers shall get what their cotton brings and not pay any more or any Savannah Augusta $ 22 fully. We also received your order to sell your cotton and your instruct- = _jons have been complied with and we are enclosing herewith provisional settlement on the same. Check for $5.45, the amount due at this time on the cotton, has been mailed to Mr. J. D, McKey, Valdosta, Ga., in accordance with an assignment that you gave to Mr. McKey. i __ At the close of the season when final settlement is made by the As- sociation on all cotton a final settlement will be made with you and | other members shipping to the optional pool who have ordered their cotton sold. Whatever is due you of the one cent per pound withheld We are enclosing a statement which gives less than seasonal] pool members for overhead expenses. It would seem that that is a fair way for the member and a sound plan for their or- _ Ek ganization. : g Reel _ In the seasonal pool this season. approximately ninety percent of the market value at the time of delivery has been advanced to members without the necessity of his putting up margin in case of a market de-- hs: 4 has not been the plan with the optional pool because as cline. TILIZING CORN AND COTTON LLOWING WINTER LEGUMES Many farmers who have winter le- es, such as vetch and Austrian eas, to turn under for fertilizing corn cotton are thinking about the ad- : ility of using commercial fertiliz- rs along with the green manure. The al problem of what kind, how ch, and when to apply the fertilizer fter peas and vetch should be solved ith the help of all available informa- 1. The Georgia Experiment Station | been conducting experiments with izer for crops which were planted ter legumes were turned under and iis article is a brief summary of the results to date. ; - Corn: The results where corn has owed the winter legume show that well fertilized green manure crop or reen manure crop planted on good will usually supply all the fertil- needed for corn, especially where legume crop yields from 5,000 to 00 pounds of green material per e. Poorer yields of the manuring 9s should be supplemented with. ommercial nitrogen. aS Cotton: Green manure crops for cot- should be turned under at least eeks before the usual planting egardless of the amount of wth made up to that time. The d and amount*of fertilizer to use jer cotton will depend largely on oil conditions. Cotton and corn following winter le- nes should be seeded in carefully ared beds and at higher rates than no cover crop is grown. e three year study shows an aver-: yield of 1009 pounds of seed cotton acre after vetch without nitrate of and 1042 pounds from 200 pounds trate of soda without vetch. Potash | Hill, Mt. Airy. Rt. 1. Box 35. Gourd seed, sweet corn, white pole ee MARKET BULLETIN and phosphates were applied in equal amounts. were applied at planting after turning under the vetch an increase of 31 pounds, of seed cotton was obtained. This increase was not enough to pay for the soda, but it is possible that a smaller amount of readily available ni- trogen at planting might pay. The practice of turning under winter legumes for soil improvement will not replace the use of all commercial fer- tilizers, especially potash and phos- phates, as green manuring with le- /gumes adds only. nitrogen and organic matter to the soil.
