- STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA,
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1930.
NUMBER 54
- from the cotton and that no interest whatever was added to it
-CO-OPERATIVES
A pamphlet was issued ty the Georgia Cotton Growers Cooper-
ative Association on May 20th, 1929, in which they stated that they
owed $435 283.79 to the first five year members of the Association.
The same article carried the statement cay they were ready to make
the first payment.
Since that time I have received bandrds of letters from former
members of the Cooperative Association ed of os treat- |
ment they received at the hands of the Coops...
For the past three weeks, I have received on an average of 20
letters a day from, members of the Coops, complaining that the Coops
owed them money and would not pay them, and especially complaining
that the Coops. would not answer their letters. The above amount,
which the Coops stated that they owed over the State of Georgia, is
the amount that they took out of the cotton, oo and above
_ the expense of handling, as a reserve fund.
It was clearly understood at the time that this was not a chase
for any service rendered but was for the purpose of collecting a re-
serve fund which would be returned to its members at the end of the
first five year contract. &.
I am also advised that this is the net amount that was eee
lat
reserve fund, each year, should have drawn interest in favor of those
to whom it was due. If it had.been handled in this manner the $435,-
283.79 would have amounted to over a half million dollars to be paid
back to the farmers of Georgia. :
This would make a nice little Christmas present far the farmers
now, wouldnt it? It is theirs and they ought to have it.
Bs Talk about FARM RELIEF, FARM AID, and other high
- sounding thingsthis $435,283.79 paid back in the hands of the needy
. farmers now would do much to relieve the actual want and would
help to buy the food and clothing that so many of them need and
would give them a little Christmas for their children, and would be
FARM JUSTICE.
They ought to have Publis Welfare Directors to see that this is -
paid. Not only Public Welfare Directors but the Directors of the
Georgia Cotton Growers Cooperative Association should have seen
that this money was handled in such a way that it could have been
paid back to its members. :

Mr. Eugene Talmadge.
Dear Sir:
_T am writing you about the Cotten Cooperative Association.
My husband was a member of the cotton pool, he got a letter
from them in 1928 wanting him to rejoin, and that they were going
_ to pay him that year one-fifth of his amount.
And I answered it and told them he was dead, and then I oo
ceived another letter saying that as he had passed away that they
would pay the full amount of all those who were dead and then they
sent me a paper to have fixed up and the Ordinary signed it and I
~ sent it back.
Then last year I got another to be sivned and I sent it back, I
a know I have written them three dozen letters and cant hear from
them at all.
They didnt

I hink it is bad that me and my poor orphan children have to
work so hard to make a living and times so hard and cant get, what
is due us.
My husband lost $35.00 at one shipment he told me.

Cotton Association,

T thought it was going to be a help to people but instead of the
help to the farmers it was a help to themselves, I guess.
J dont think I will ever join anything like it,

Yours truly,
MRS. E. D. COOGLER.
