A Few Precautionary Ideas

In times of distress, more swindle schemes are originated than
at any other time. Crooks in all lines know that farmers will grab
at a straw in depressed times.
_ been going on in Gorgia, and try to sell strawberry plants for about .
three times what they are worth, and will draw a contract -hog-

tying you for five years, and only agree to sell your strawberries
for you at a 10 per cent commission. They do not agree what they
will pay you, but do tie you up for five years where you cannot mar-
ket them to anyone else. is

We have recently run upon such a plan as this being pushed

around Telfair County by Mr. S. M. Phillips, hailing from the Caro- .

linas and Tennessee. Mr. Phillips operated around Pearson, Ga.,
much to the dissatisfaction of all to whom he sold plants. Good

strawberry plants can be bought for from $1.75 to $2.50 per thous-

and from practically any reputable nursery grower. _ Not one thing
is gained by giving a man. about three times what the plants are
worth. : \

I received a letter this monethe from a lady who sold some

_chickens'to a man in a truck for 26 cents per pound for hens. She

explained how he came, stating that he was buying for a big store

- organization, and gave her a check on some bank in South Carolina. |

It. was a rubber check, and bounced right back on her, and her chick-
ens were gone.

Of course, most people like to do business by check. It is eae
than carrying money around on ones person.. When anyone comes
to your place and wants to buy produce, ask them in advance if they
wish to pay cash or give a check. If they want to give a check, be
sure to get the license number of the truck or car, and have them
to get the recommendation of the local bank. This is very easily
done, and practically all people arrange to do this. whose checks are
good. Treat the truck drivers right.

but be cautious and eliminate the crooks.

who are offering to loan 7 cents on cotton and hold it, without any

further advancement, until the last of August, 1931. If you must
draw money on your cotton, this may be the best plan.

ing you the names of some of the firms here:
C. B. Howard & Company, Atlanta, Ga.

Williamson-Inman Co., Atlanta, Ga.
Anderson-Clayton & Co., Atlanta, Ga.

The Georgia Cotton Growers Co-operative Association also

states that they will loan 7 cents on cotton, and after it is graded

and weighed, will make an additional advance up to 9 cents. If you

do not have to borrow any money on your cotton, store it at home

and hold it. You can do this cheaper than you can grow another
crop next year, at present prices. If prices do not pick up. plant
Just as little cotton as you can get by with.

If you have a good spot
If you are short on feed,
you should certainly plant oats and put about 15 lbs. of vetch to the
acre with the oats. If you have a piece of land that is running

any plan that I know, and you can double the yield on it in corn
next year.

Se Critical times ae all over the country. We are

having more of a panic among the white-collar fellows than any-
one. They are going to originate all sorts of co-operative plans to
make the farmer rich. The best thing for the farmers to do is to
move further into the country and let those get-rich-quick plans
Figure on having your feed at home, and take care of what
you have. If you have any building or terracing to do, now is a
mighty good time to do it, as there are lots of people out of work,

and you can get it done cheaper than at any other timeand it will

help some poor people who have nothing to do and nothing to go on.
