ANOTHER VISION OF GEORGIA

OW Saturday, the twentysthied 2 hae I left Adnnta about
-six oclock in the morning and drove down to Barnesville, across to
Culloden, Fort Valley, Montezuma and on to Byromville, Georgia.

At Byromville, we attended a vere and barbecue Ewen by Mr.

8. B. Byrom, of Byromville. ;
Mr. Harvey Jordan had put on a demonstration on the farm
of Mr. Byrom with 100 acres of cotton. The cotton was the Wil-
son type. -They used a thousand pounds of 12-5-7 fertilizer to the
acre under this cotton at planting time and two applications of 100
_ pounds each, of sulphate of ammonia during the season.

~ All who saw this cotton that day estimated that it would make
a bale to the acre. It was exceptionally good cotton.
We enjoyed the picnic, barbecue and speeches that we had

there very much. There were about four or ae hundred darters.

_ from around that section present,

- .On this trip I noticed. that all of hic crops frott Atlanta on
~ down to about Culloden had suffered very much from the dry wea-

ther. From below Culloden down to Montezuma the seasons had

been favorable and crops are good. A great deal of the cotton was

open on that day and 4 few fields near Byromville and Montezuma
had been practically picked out.

We went from Byromville, through Hawkingyille and Eastman
on to my home below McRae. The seasons have been favorable in
that section also. Cotton is extra early and a good many fields

have been gathered. :
The corn, beans and peanuts are reasonably good. Potatoes

and cane are also although they are needing rain now in that
_ section.
Soo baking it as-a whole, South Garcia has been fortunate this.
year with favorable seasons for making crops. The only grievance
we have is the unreasonable, depressing price we are receiving for
all crops.
On Thursday, August 28th, a party of us from the office took
a trip from Atlanta through Cartersville, Dalton and Calhoun to
= Chattanooga. re

attendante about 700 real farmers and we had talks from Governor

Horton, of Tennessee, Commissioner of Agriculture Fitts of Ten-

nessee, and Mr. Carl Williams, of the Federal Farm Board. I also
made a talk.
I believe that these meetings of the fabmiers and business men
together will be productive of splendid results.

iness men of the city will have to wake up and realize that they are

The drought condition from Cartersville on to Chatbahdoga was
more severe than I had thought. I went over this same section last
year and on fields where I then saw cotton over waist high, this time
it is only about half knee high, and opening right in the top. The
corn from Cartersville on to Tennessee is practically burned up in

broadcasted and plowed in the middles before they finish gathering
By this method they will have feed next spring.

After the Farm Institute was over in Chattanooga we went up
on top of Lookout Mountain before coming back to Atlanta. We

SCUPPERNONG CULTURE

Commissioner Talmadge received on
Tuesday, August 26, a letter from Dr.
Neal Kitchens, Warm Spring, Ga., on
the cultivation of scuppernongs. Mr.
Talmadge found the information
contained therein of such value that

> are printing it for the readers of

the Bulletin:

Dear Sir:

_ If any of the following is of any

service to your department, use it; if

.0t, throw it out. Experiments at Jo-

ah Farm with all kinds of grapes
show that the scuppnong is the most
valuable. It makes a crop every year

ind is immune to disease. It lasts in-
definitely. There are nine varieties

MARKET
the farm. The fruit lasts from Au-
gust 15th to Nevember Ist.

Arbors should be constructed with
cement posts 4 x 4 reinforced with
one inch steel rod, length 7 ft. The
steel rods should project 2 above the
upper end of the posts to which gal-
vanized iron should be attached.
Posts to be set 2 ft. in ground. Leave
open spaces in the trellis about 2 ft.
in diameter. By standing on a box
you can gather the fruit from above.
The open spaces should be six or sev-
en feet apart.

The most important thing about the
scuppernong is the pruning. Never
prune in the spring of the year, be-
cause when the sap commences its
upward journey it is crude sap and
will not coagulate. It exerts a pressure
of 20 lbs. to the square inch, thats
why it bleeds so freely and some-

the leaves are grown is the best time
to prune but anytime from then un-
til frost is all right. The sap return-
ing from the green leaf is true sap
and coagulates readily. To keep the
vines confined to the trellis, we prune

to October.

On hard clay soil after repeated
failures, we succeeded in getting the
vines to grow by mixing a half bush-
el of sand with the clay around the
roots of the plant. The plant demands
more silica or sand than any other
grape. The best and only fertilizer
used on the farm here is oak leaves
applied in the fall and winter. This
stimulates its natural habitat so no
cultivation is required.

The farm is open to all from sun
up to sun down exeryday in the year.
The crop this year is excellent. Noth-
ing for sale.
Yours truly,

(Signed) TOM NEAL KITCHEN.
