STATE CAPITOL
PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU .OF
MARKETSA. D. JONES, DIRECTOR
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 3, 1930.
Last night I reached Atlanta from my home in Telfair County. I
had been riding all the evening and was tired and. hungry. I went
down into the tea room at one of the leading Hotels, because I thought
that this would be a reasonably cheap place. The only dinner that
they had listed was one for $1.50. It was suppr for me, but they
called it dinner. I finally ordered a bowl of soup,( half a head of Ice-
burg lettuce, and a glass of buttermilk. They served a few crackers with
this. They presented me with a check for 70 cents.
Right after I} had finished dinner, or supper as it is called at home,
I met Dr. Campbell from Athens, in the lobby of the hotel. I told him
that I had just had dinner. He went out on the porch, the regular
dining room of this hotel. He stated that he was confronted with a
bill-of-fare that called for $2.00| for the dinner, or supper, out there. I
mean, $2 for each one. :
- After I looked over the bill-of-fare,; I wondered what the farmers
were getting for the products that they were selling. That half of a
head of lettuce that I ate probably brought the farmer about 3 cents.
The glass of buttermilk probably brought the farmer 2 cents. The little
tomato that was in the soup and okra probably brought the farmer 1%
cents. Of course there was some dressing that went along with it, and
service and preparation that. was expensive. These hotels and cafes
buy their produce from brokers and stores after it has changed hands
several times from, the farmer. Something is wrong with the price that
the farmer is getting for his stuff. I shipped twenty-five crates of
cantaloupes Saturday from. Scotland, Ga. This morning, a produce
firm called me on the phone and told me that they had received them,
butt that the market was glutted and they did not know whether they
could get anything over express charges for them. They stated, how-
ever, that they were axceptionally good stock. One-half a cantaloupe
generally costs the consumer at hotels and restaurants 15 cents. Did
-you ever figure what this would be to the crate? A standard crate of
cantaloupe consists of forty-five. Allowing five cantaloupes for spoiled
and green, this leaves forty. Multiply this by thirty, and you have
$12.00, that a crate of cantaloupes will bring when it is put on the dish
for the average person who eats them.
Watermelons have certainly busted. A car of 26 Ib. melons bring
about $50.00. You cannot buy them anywhere in the city for less than
25 cts. This is $250.00 to the car. The average freight rate in Atlanta
would run around $40.00 to $50.00 per car. The farmer is not getting
what he should. ; :
: I received a copy of a letter this morning, sent out by the Pedigree
Dairies, Inc. It:is published herewith: ;
PEDIGREE DAIRIES, Inc.

NOTICE TO ALL MILK SHIPPERS: |
You are hereby notified that effective today we will buy milk at
the following prices:

Grade B, 65 cts.
Surplus, 50 cts.

and 12.2 cents per gallon for Surplus nfilk.
/ Pitces Of Farm Produce
Due to the falling market on butter fat, we have been compelled
to cut the purchase price on whole milk. The local market is over-
crowded and prices are falling daily. \
Yours very truly,

\ By B. B. GEORGE. :
As soon as I read this letter, I phoned the Veterinary Department,
and had them to figure what this (Grade A, Grade B, and Sur- |
plus milk was bringing per average gallon. Grade A milk
is bringing 25.8-.cents per gallon. Grade B milk is bringing
22.36 cents per galion. Surplus milk is bringing 17.2 cents per gallon
This is what the farmer is getting for it, at present prices offered by
Pedigree Dairies, Inc. and others. The Veterinary Department advised
'me that it would take at least 5 cents per gallon to take care of the
expense of iceing and transporting this milk to the market. Lets see
what that leaves the farmer, net, for his milk} at the barn. That is 20.8
cents.per gallon for Grade A, 17.36 cents per gallon for Grade B,
How: long can the farmer
last at any such prices as this.. Did you know that they charge 10 cts.
per glass for milk at any hotel or restaurant in Atlanta? Did you know
that averages $1.60 per gallon which the consumer, or the man who .
finally drinks the milk, has to pay for it?
I am publishing a letter that I received from a hard-working far-
mer at Forsyth, Ga. I am omitting his name, as he did not give me
authority to publish this letter, but he represetts the average farmer
now who is trying to stagger along under the present prices of farm
products. He is the one who sent me the letter from Pedigree Dairies,
Ine.
June 26, 1930.
Dear Mr. Talmadge:: E
T have the dairy blues, I am enclosing a notice of the second cut
on milk since March.
I sent to Atlanta the first half of June over seventeen hundred
pounds of milk, and on yesterday got a check for $27.97, that is for
fifteen days. The ice bill to come out of that and the feed that I
bought also. Our children are all grown but one, and gone, so it is just
wife and me to milk and farm. I do what I can to raise feed for
cows and one mule. No hely\ on place. We cant live at that. We just
try to have real necessities of course. :
I bought five cows with borrowed money. Am trying to pay on
them. It is dry here and hot. Crops the sorriest that I ever saw at this
time of year. I thought you were in a position to.adyise me. ~
We dont mind work if we can get anything for it, but to work
from 12 to 15 hours these hot days and get poorer every day. I had
been thinking that I had better sell out and quit. No. give out and quit,
for that| is what I would have to do. :
When here is not one bad thing, there are tworabbits, crows,
birds, squirrels, worms and different plagues to destroy everything you -
try to have. i Sa
