Watch Out For ae Insecticides

A great many. complaints are penltshas this office about the ravages
of the boll weevil, worms on tobacco, the pecan nut borer, cantaloupe
borer, worms on tomatoes, the Mexican bean beetle, etc. The State

-. Board of Entomology has specialists to advise the proper control for...

insects that attack all crops. Z eS

My experience for the past. three years has been that there are
lots of cheats in insecticides. We have just run up against one of the
cleverest cheats in the form of boll weevil poison that Ae been before
this Department in a number of years, by the name | of LIQUID

e ARSENATE or CALCIUM ARSENITE. . This poison has been manu-

2s factured and sold out from Shady Dale, Georgia, under both names.

Mrs, J. H. Young, as. Receiver, brought a case against the De-
- partment of Agriculture and the State Board of Entomology, to enjoin
. us from pom ard in the sale of the insecticide named above, or from
advising against the use of it. This case was heard before Judge Parks
of Greensboro, Georgia on the 20th of June, 1930. Judge Parks held

that his Court had no jurisdiction over the matter and dismissed the
-. suit, and dissolved the injunction. ;

.. I am therefore advising you not to buy this LIQUID ARSENATE
or. CALCIUM ARSENITE, as it has no value as an insecticide.

They are putting approximately three tenths of a pound of Grecian

Arsenic in a gallon preparation of water and what is supposedly lime.

This small amount of Grecian Arsenic costs about four cents. In other

words, they have four cents worth of poison in a preparation that they ~
are selling for $1.50.

They are advising the farmers to dilute this
preparation, in 50 gallons of water and then spray it on the cotton.

: Stat Entomolo ist, Mr. M. S. Yeomans, and the State Chemist,
ou ea state that if this diluted mixture vill kill boll weevils

then ordinary water will kill them.

enough to kill my potatoes.

5

I have just. received a letter from Mr, T. = Strange, which I am oe

pubGning herewith:

Eatonton, Georgia,
June 18, 1930 |

Mr. Eugene Talmadge, - i

Atlanta, Georgia.

My dear Mr. Talmadge:

)

I notice that they have you enjoined in reeane to the boll weevil

poison that is made at Shady Dale

Tve used it on potatoes and it would not kill the bugs until I used
: And you have a friend here that used it
on cotton and he tried it on the weevil and it failed to kill them. You
can use this for whatever it is worth to you. :

Yours truly,

J T. H. STRANGE.

Watch out for fake insecticides. It is expensive to use insecticides.
It is very expensive to use the wrong kind of insecticide because then
your MOREY and labor is gone and the insects have not been stopped.

This is notice to anyone farming in Georgia to communicate with the
Department of Agriculture and we will have your insecticide sampled
and will advise you as to the effectiveness of the insecticide,

Watermelons are now moving, and the pack and stem treatment of
watermelons is very important. Elsewhere in this issue of the Bulletin
you will find an article on the proper peck and stem treatment of
watermelons.

EUGENE TALMADGE.

TAKE MORE CARE IN TREATING
YOUR MELONS

_ Some of the shippers of melons last
year did not treat their melons for
-stem-end rot as carefully as they
should. All growers should make cer-
tain that every melon that is shipped
has been carefully treated; and they
will receive a bttr cash track price.
If they are forced to ship qn consign-
ment, they will be assured that their
- melons will arrive in good condition at
their destination, all other things be-
ing equal. =
_. We are printing below advice of the
_ State Entomologist for treating melons,
should be read carefully by all
>~It is as follows:
Treatment For Stem-end Rof of
Melons
The treatment now usually recom-
mended consists of a 6 percent blue-
stone and starch paste which is ap-
plied to the cut stem at the car. This
solution is made as follows: To make
one gallon, put 3 1-2 quarts of water
and 8 ounces of bluestone in an enam-
_ eled kettle and heat to the boiling
_ point. Mix 4 ounces of starch with 1
_ pint of cold water and stir until a
thick, even solution is secured. When
the bluestone is all dissolved and the
_ solution boiling, add the starch mix-
ture slowly, stirring so that lumps will
not be formed. Continue to boil and
stir, after the starch is added, for one

or two minutes, or until the starch
thickens evenly. Better to make up

the paste each. day as Needed. How-
ever, 2 large quantity may be made up
at one time by using only 1-2 as much
water as directed above,

- paste will keep for several weeks.
_ Experiments have shown that the

best results are secured by treating the
melons as they are packed in the car.
_ When packing the melons in the car
turn the tem ends outward. A man

and adding |
_ water when using. Made this way, the}

\

MARKET BULLETIN

follows the packers, and with a sharp |

| knife cuts off a portion of the stem,

and with a small brush applies a dab
of the paste to the fresh cut surface
of each stem. One man or a boy can
do this as fast as two men can pack
the melons in the car.

It is important that the melons be
packed in the car th same day they

are cut. Cut the melons with as long a
stem as possible, so that the second

cutting at the car will beeasier. It is
also a good plan to disinfect the knife
after each cut with a 2 percent solu-
tion of formaldehyde. Handle the
melons carefully so as to avoid bruis-
ing, splitting or breaking the stems.
The cutters should be careful and
never touch or cut into a decayed
melon.

_ If the car contains yard refuse, or
has been used before for shipping
melons, it should be mashed or spray-
ed all over the interior before loading,

with a 2 percent solution of bluestone. |

Bulletin you will find standard grades
for watermelons adopted by the State
Bureau of Markets. These grades
should be carefully read by every ship-
per of watermelons of this state.
