THE CORN ROOT WORM, CANTALOUPE BORER, AND BOLL WEEVIL

\

During the past week, I have received inquiries as to how to con-
_ trol the Corn Root Worm, commonly referred to as Bud Worm. The
following is the receipt that has been furnisheq me by Mr. M. S.

_. Yeomans, State Entomologist:

The adult of this insect is the Twelve Spotted Cucumber Beetle,
and winters over in rubbish, dead grasses, and especially likes ditch
banks which have not been burned over. ;

ground near the corn plants and is capable of laying as high as four
hundred eggs. The young worms attack the stems and roots of* the
corn plants soon after they have hatched. ae

_ The time at which the corn is planted effectsto a certain extent
its chance of escaping Root Worm Injury. Observations made by
trained Entomologists seem to indicate that corn planted during the
latter part of March and after May 10th, is less damaged than that
which is planted in April and the first week of May. However, these
_ periods will vary from the Southern part of the State northward. Where

the Root Worm is especially bad in a field, it is advisable to rotate the

- eropsnot follow corn with corn. Burning over terraces in the field
would aid in the control of this insect. c

There are several birds which are helpful in controlling the Corn

a Worm, among the best are Bob White and the Req Headed Wood-
pecker, an :

I have also received inquiries as to how to control the cantaloup
borer, technically referred to as the PICKLE WORM AND THE
MELON WORM. I called,on the Department of. Entomology for this

= information and Mr: Tom ONeill furnishes me the following:

monly found boring in cantaloups, squashes, and cucumbers, and cause

a great deal of damage every year to these crops in Georgia. Since

these two insects are closely related ang have very similar habits they
may be treated as one.

Unfortunately these pests cannot be controlled by the usual insecti-
cides, since they do their feeding, to a great extent, inside the fruit,

. blossoms or buds of the plant where they cannot be reached by sprays

or Gusts. Repeated experiments with lead arsenate, calcium arsenate
and other poisons have proven entirely ineffective. {
and trap crops give the greatest relief. The weakest point in the life
history of the insect is the over-wintering stage. This is passed as a
pupa or resting stage, in a thin silken cocoon, wrapped usually in an
old melon leaf on top of the ground or attached to a nearby weed. Dee

plowing immediately after harvesting the crop or in the early fall will

kill most all of the worms, and if preceded by the collecting and burning

or composting of all vines and cull fruit, will be even more effective.
The few surviving pupae transform to moths in the spring and

This insect deposits its eggs slightly below the surface of the

search out plants.to lay their eggs upon. Eggs are usually laid on the
flower, bud or tender tip of the vine. The first generation of worms
complete their development there and due to being few in. number
cause little injury and attract no attention. The second and later >
generations, appearing early in June and thereafter, are much more
numerous and the partly grown worms wander from the blossoms to
the fruits, often boring in 7 before they complete development.

The blossoms of summer squash are large and showy and are more
attractive to the egg-laying moths than the blossoms of either canta-
loups or cucumbers. Taking advantage of this faet these latter named |
crops can be successfully protected by having growing in the-field suc-
cessive plantings of squash. About four rows per acre are required
and should be planted at two-week intervals so that a continuous supply
of blossoms is available. These blooms, together with any young squash
found infested, should be pickeg twice a week and destroyed.

There have been various insecticides offered for registration with
the Department of Agriculture which did not come up to the State
standards in their poison content. Poisoning cotton is very expensive
when you have the proper kind of poison. My personal experience has
been that the best plan is to get calcium arsenate. If you want to mix
it with water and syrup, all right. If you want to put it out as a dry
dust, you can do so. ; 2 : = i =

Last year the price of calcium arsenate ran up to eleven nd

twelve cents a pound. This year I have interested myself in trying to

keep the price low enough for the farmer to be able to afford=to buy it.
I publisheq in the Market Bulletin of May 15th, a list of dealers in
calcium arsenate, which came up to the State standards, who would
sell it for six and a half cents per pound, less five per cent, delivered
at any Georgia point in car load lots. Of course, the retail price on
Jess than corload lots would be slightly higher than this. I am again
publishing this list and adding the name of the Johnson Hardware
Company at Newnan, Georgia. They wrote me on June 4th that they

had twenty cars they would sell atthe price quoted above. | ec

If you are going to poison generally in your community, get enough

of your tarmers together and order a carload immediately.

Do not forget that the singletree and the natural dust of the field
are mighty good boll weevil fighters, especially when they are used

regularly.
