TAKE A TRIP

When I was a little boy, Sam Jones held a revival meeting at
Forsyth. He suggested to a large audience one night that they should

- take a trip when they caught up with the crops. He said go down to
Bolingbroke or Smarrs. These two places are about five and ten miles
from Forsyth. That was before the day of automobiles. If Sam Jones
should deliver this same sermon to-day he would Say get your car and
go about five or six hundred miles. Automobiles have made the world
much smaller.
It does us good to know the conditions of other sections of the
country and to meet and talk with

~ to know. how they make a living.
. Last week I took a trip from Atlanta through Dalton, Chattanooga,
_ and the mountains of Tennessee, across into Kentucky, through Louis-
ville and into Indiana. !

_ There are lots of people in Georgia who have never seen the moun-

tains. I never had until about three years ago. 7

To wind around to the top of a mountain, then look straight down,

. practically a mile and then look off across the country as far as the
eye can reach will make you ralize the vastness of nature and how

make you realize that fundamental principles count more than any
shrewd act or sharp trade. It will make you love nature. After all, the
love of nature is the best foundation for religion.

I went by the birth place of Abraham Lincoln. He was born in a
log house eleven by sixteen feet, with one window, and with a stick and
dirt chimney. He lived in this house until he was eight years old.

/ At that time they moved to Illinois. His mother died when he was

7. .+, ten years old. eRe egy t

This log house is now encased in a great stone mansion built by the
Federal Government. It is on a side road, but it is visited every day by.

people from all over the world who go there to pay homage to this
man who realized that the fundamental principles count more in this
world than anything else. ea : : f

A statement from Lincoln in the mansion carries this thought Stay
with any one when he is right but part company with him immediately

- when he is wrong.? \ ar. eb :

I wonder what Nancy Hanks Lincoln would think if she could rise
up and see the world paying tribute to the measley hut in which she
worked and strove for many years. | ah

The people in Tennessee are shrewd. Most of them are traders. A
large portion of their crop is pastures. They have lots of hogs, chickens,
cattle, sheep, some mules and horses. They have something to sell and
trade all th eyear around. They are not confined to a money crop that
lasts only a short season, as is true in most of Georgia.

: Tobacco was just being planted in Tennessee. Lots of the tobacco
beds in Kentucky had not been opened. It was raining in Kentucky
last week and I presume that they will plant their tobacco as soon as
the ground will permit. | :

people of different environments and ~

small any one person, or his activities are, in this great universe. It will .

three times as hard as in the country.

___ Most of the farmers in Tennessee and Kentucky have a habit of roll-
ing their ground as soon as the crops are planted. They will plant corn
and then turn around with the roller and roll over it. Most of the corn
was in this condition when I saw it. It had come up and was about
five or six inches high and it had not been worked any except this

rolling. This rolling had been done over the entire surface immediately
after planting. :

In most of Tennessee and Kentucky they plant their corn in three
and three and a half foot rows and from three to three and a half feet
moe drill. Figure this up, one ear to a stalk will make a tremendous
__ _They have better grade chickens, and better grade hogs and cattle
in Tennessee and Kentucky than we have on an average in Georgia.
Of course, there is more in the feed than there is in the breed, but the
Mates properly fed will yield you a profit where generally a@ scrub shows

ace

I was surprised to see some cotton as far north as Nashville, Ten-

nessee. Most of it was up about ready for chopping.

Most of the people that I saw plowing were plowin thr
mules and horses. It takes them a long time to hitch and unhiteh. OE
course, this is not practical on our Georgia soils and under our present
system of farming, although we should study to make one furrow count
as as as ee ;

saw several people plowing two rows of corn at the time.
Most all of them plant with a double row planter. On all of the large
level tracts in Georgia we could figure on this more. :

After all the rural population of Tennessee and Kentucky is very
similar to the rural settlement of Georgia. They have hard times up
there just as we do. Lots of fields in Tennessee and Kentucky are
growing up in scrub timber or pasture.
abandoned. This is too true of Georgia.

, There is one consolation, this condition cannot continue.
In all the cities where I stopped you could see numbers of beggars.
You could see signs of idleness and unemployment just as you see in

Atlanta. -Ninety-nine per cent of these people are hunting for an easy

position. Very few of them want a real man or womans job. Necessity
is going to stop this large influx to the cities. Hard times in the city are
After all, Georgia is the greatest of the Southern States. You can
make a living in the country here if you are persistent, intelligent and
eed If you stick to it you accumulate something for your
old age.
A rolling stone gathers no moss.

When you lay by, take a trip, then come back home. It will do.

after all There is No Place Like Home. :

Georgia cotton growers are showing much iter: in
topdressing or side dressing cotton with nitrogenous fer-.
The Experiment Station has been carrying on

amounts of fertilizers can be profitably applied. Under

nitrogenous fertilizers to reduce loss by leaching early in
the growing season. Under these conditions and where

nitrogen should pay. Fields with poor stands or other-

very important that the nitrogen be applied at chopping
or as soon after as practical since tests show that later
appleations made when cotton begins to square are not
as profitable as those made at chopping time. Fertilizers
for topdressing may be mixed with sand or dirt to insure

MARKET

CORN ACREAGE IN U. S.
STATIONARY SINCE 1919.

Power Farming Releases Feed for Work
- Stock To Balance Other New
Uses of Grain

Corn acreage in the United States
has been practically stationary at ap-
proximately 100,000,000 acres during
the last ten years wheras in the forty
years preceding 1910 the area increased
from about 37,000,000 acres in 1869 to
98,383,000 acres in 1909. The records
appear in a statistical bulletin on corn
just issued. by the Bureau of Agricul-
tural Economics, United State Depart-
ment of Agriculture.

Bureau officials point out that the
industry has failed to expand in the
last ten years because increased do-
mestic consumption of corn and: corn
products, pork products, dairy pro-
dubts, and poultry products has been
neutralized approximately by the de-
crease in consumption of corn by work
stock resulting from the partial. re-
placement of horses and mules by ma-
chine power.

Decreased export of American corn
in recent years is explained by the
facts that each year the domestic mar-
ket absorbs increasing quantities, and
that many of the northern European
countries prefer the @#mall-grained but
hard flinty Argentine corn to the lar-
ger and softer grain from the United
States.

Exports of corn from the United
States were small until* about 1850
when various events in this country
and in Europe caused exports to in-
crease rapidly. Exports of corn in-
creased, except for a few years follow-
ing the Civil War, until 1900 when ex-
port of 213,000,000 bushels set the high
record. Since 1900 exports of corn
have declined.

Modern inventions and chemical
analysis, says the bureau, have ex-
panded greatly the uses of corn and
have added to. the value of the corn
crop. Several of these products have
become important factors in foreign
trade. Exports of glucose and grape
sugar, used to mix with sirups and in
the production of such products as
jams, jellies, and candy, have increased
from a little more than 13,000,000 Ibs.
in 1881 to nearly 149,000,000 pounds in
1927. ;

- Cornstarch, another \corn product,
used in laundry work, in dressing and
finishing textiles in the manufacture of
baking powder, and in toilet powders,
is important in export trade. Exports

of oil corn and corn-oil cake were large }:

prior to the World War, but since then
have shown g downward trend.

The bureau in its recent Outlook
Report? declared that with normal
Planting conditions, an increase in
corn acreage in 1930 of early 2 per cent
may be expected. Should an average
yielded per acre be obtained, corn pro-
duction would be about 5 per cent lar-
ger than in 1929. With the possibility
of lower feeding requirements and
with no material improvement in com-
mercial or European demand for Am-
erican corn, prices for the 1930 corn
crop are likely to be lower than for
either the 1928 or 1929 crops. With an
increase in cattle numbers definitely
under way, the long-time outlook is
for corn prices to be somewhat more

\favorable relative to livestock prices

than during recent years.

FEDERAL LABORATORY TO STUDY
iE COTTON GINNING IS
AUTHORIZED

Establishment of an experimental
cotton ginning laboratory by the De-

partment of Agriculture has been au-

ak }
a

the ginning processes.

BULGE SCN
thorized by Congress in the enactment
of H. R. 10173, which received executive
approval on April 21, according to an
announcement issued to-day by the
United States Department of Agricul-
ture. Under the terms of the bill the
Secretary of Agriculture is authorized
to investigate the ginning of cotton, to
establish and maintain ginning plants
and laboratories and to make such
tests, demonstrations and experiments
and such technical and scientific stud-
ies in relation to cotton ginning as he
Shall deem. necessary.

Need for improvement in the ginning
of the cottdfi* crop has been urged by
every branch of the cotton industry.
In the past, it was said at the de-
partment, efforts to improve the qual-
ity of ginning have been handicapped
by lack of scientific information and
by the number and complexity of the
factors both in the seed cotton and in
It was pointed
out that moisture and foreign matter.
in seed cotton, fiber length and charac-
ter, and the tenacity with which fibers
in different cottons cling to the seed
coat, are important, although the ef-
fect. which, in any given combination
of conditions, each has upon the spin-
ning quality of cotton is as yet un-
known. In saw-type gins the matter
of saw speeds has been a subject of
much discussion and frequently has
been confused with increased output or
capacity. The exact influence of saw
Speeds upon the quality of ginned cot-
ton is, however, still obscure, prelimi-
nary studies in the department having
disclosed that cotton may be ginned
ither well or badly at relatively high
or relatively low speeds. ; :

A scientific approach to the prob-
lems of ginning has been impeded, the
department says, both by lack of
methods of measuring the effect upon
the ginned fiber of variations in seed

and by lack of facilities for varying
sufficintly and controlling the condi-
tions of ginning. Recent developments
in fiber analysis have in large part re-
moved the first of these obstacles. The
establishment of a ginning laboratory
especially designed and equipped for
experimental work, is expected to re-
move the latter. It is hoped that the
investigations contemplated in the new
legislation may lay a foundation for
better gin management and technique
and may contribute substantially to
improvement of the quality of Ameri-
can grown cotton:

INSECT MERGER FOILED
BY ALERT ENTOMOLOGISTS

Many are the problems faced by

on insect pests. After entomologists
had discovered that calcium arsenate
was an effective poison for the cotton-
boll weevil they were astonished to find
that the control.of this pest apparent-
ly brought on infestations by another
though less important pests, the cot-
ton aphid, sometimes called the cotton
louse.

To determine the facts of the case,
the United States Department of Agri-
culture has been conducting extensive
experiments in Louisiana. These ex-
periments show that dusting cotton
repeatedly with calcium arsenate for
boll-weevil control actually does bring
about an increase in the number of
aphids in some cases. There are two
reasons for this result.

In the first place, it was found that
the calcium-arsenate dust kills some of
the natural enemies of aphids under
certain conditions. In this connection
it is encouraging to know that lady
beetles are not affected by the dust.
Another explanation of the problem

lies in the attraction of any white

cotton and in the ginning processes, |

powder for the aphids. Tests showed
that aphids were attracted to cotton
plants dusted with white powders, such
as calcium arsenate, cornstarch, and
flour. ee oe
This does not mean, however, that
cotton growers are going to discontinue
the use of calcium arsenate and give
boll weevils a free hand. Instead, the
Department of Agriculture is recom-
mending the use of nicotine sulphate in.
connection with the calcium-arsenate
dusting in case the aphids become
abundant. The nicotine sulphate con
trols the aphids, while the calcium
arsenate tcontrols the boll weevils.

CHICK MORTALITY CAN BE KEPT
BELOW 10 PER CENT

With new methods in poultry pdo-
duction there is no reason why chick -
mortality should not be kept below 10.

per cent, says Dr. M. A. Jull, poultry
specialist of the United States Depart-

ment of Agriculture. In certain sec-_
tions it has been common to regard a
15 to 20 per cent chick mortality a
nothing unusual, he says. ~ :

Doctor Jull bases his statements on
results of experimental work counduc- *
ed by the department and on results:
of poultry growers in several States
here definite campaigns for reducing
chick mortality have been conducted
For the past three years th mortality
for chicks up to 4 weeks. of age at the -
departments animal husbandry ex-
periment farm at Beltsville, Md., has
been below 4 per cent. Ao

Keeping chick mortality below 10
per cent is largely a matter of sanita-
tion, according to Dr. Jull. The first
thing necessary is to get eggs or chicks
from breeding stock that has been
tested for bacillary white diarrhea. In
the second place, be sure that the in- |
cubation of the eggs has been carried
out under the most sanitary conditions
possible. Then the brooder house
should be carefully disinfected and the
litter replaced two or three times a
week. Clean feed, fed in clean troughs
is another factor in reducing chick
mortality. eo

PAPER MULCH PROMISING FOR
GROWING OF TOBACCO

A favorable response of tobacco to-
paper mulch was indicated in trials
throughout the Eastern States, says
Dr. L. H. Flint, of the United States
Department of Agriculture, comment-
ing on last years experimental results
from the use of paper mulch. This re-
sponse, he says, has indicated more
rapid development, increased yields,
and superior quality of the mulch-
grown product. ; 5 ee AoW

In a number of trials with tobacco
the application of fertilizer was re-
duced sufficiently to defray the entire
cost of the paper without reducing +he |
yield. Although such results are sug-
gestive they may be of very limited
significance. -The trials were largely
confined to open culture tobacco, and
nothing is known regarding the in-
fluence of paper on shade-grown {o-
bacco.

In most cases soil has been used for
holding the paper. Laying the paper _
by machinery in connection with
planting has received attention, and ~
appears essential to the general use-
fulness of paper in tobacco culture. |
As a whole the adaption of paper mulch
+o the production of this crop seems
to offer sufficient promise to warrant
the serious attention which is being
given it by growers. ee .

Further work will be required, how- _
ever, Dr. Flint says, to determine the ~

practicability of the mulch for tobac-
co, and the problem is still in the ex- _
perimental stage. ee =
