= Fall and Winter Work On The Farm



When we get through gathering our crops and put in all

the small grain we will need next year, and have planted

our cover erops, what will we do through the long winter
months?

I always enjoyed sitting around the cross roads store,
playing checkers, and talking with my neighbors. I realize
however that I never did get much profit from that. No bus-
iness will stand four or five months idleness.

JT went in some fields this year where there was a very
small infestation of weevils. In practically all of these fields
the farmers told me that they ripped up all the cotton stalks
before Christmas and turned the land.

If you have a large number of cattle it is profitable to
turn them on your. land as soon as you have finished picking
the cotton, before the frost kills the squares and leaves.

As soon as the frost kills the vegetation it is extremely

good weevil control to rip. up the stalks. I believe that most
of the weevils hibernate in the ground and live off of suck-
ing the roots during the winter. I do not know whether my
friends, the entomologists: will agree with me or not, but this
is Just a strict field observation of mine.

When rolling land is terraced, it pays to rip the stalks
with a middle buster. By this means you will bed youn land
and it will not wash ae the winter. The sediment in
the furrows through the winter, also help enrich the

- land.

If you have a body of woods near some of your fields.
try hauling in some leaves, pine straw and woods mold, and
scattering it over your land.

Dont you believe our wives would think more of us if
we did these things through the winter, rather than making

so many extra trips to town?

more of the borers, with no injury to

How to Apply ;
: Before applying the paradichloro-
_ benzene, the soil for about a foot
around the trunk should be cleaned of
trash and grass and then smoothed
with the back of a shovel. No mound-
ing is necessary before applying ex-
cept where the borers are working
above the soil level; then the soil lev-
_el should be raised so that the crys-
tals are above the topmost borer gal-
leries. The paradichlorobenzene
should be applied in a circle around
the trunk, about one inch from the
bark. About six shovelfulg of dirt are
then placed in a cone shape around
the tree over the band and packed
down compactly. The first shovelful
of dirt should be shaken over the band
carefully to avoid getting the crystals
against the trunk.
Length of Exposure
The mounds should be removed af-
ter four weeks from the four and five

_ year old peach tree and after six weeks |

from the six year and older trees.
Fresh soil should be. returned to the
_ tee to its original level before cold
weather to avoid winter injury.

vae hibernate on the trunk and around
the base of the tree and those lar-

THE CORN EARWORM

When hairy vetch is left too long
_ before being turned under it is often
_ attacked by the corn earworm. This

ae % ?



insect breeds on the vetch and then
migrates to the next field and attacks
corn, cotton, peach trees and many
other cultivated crops. It is a serious
pest during some seasons and in a
short time may cause many hundreds
of dollars worth of damage. Fortu-
nately, the earworm on vetch for
green manure is easily prevented and
if i+ does occur can be controlled.
Vetch plowed under when in full
bloom will not cause trouble. If for
any reason it is not possible to plow
at this time, disk the land thorough-
ly so as to kill the vetch. When these
precautions are taken there is no
danger in using hairy vetch as a green
manure crop.

_In case the earworm does develop
in the vetch the first thing todo is to
plow a deep furrow around the field
in order to prevent the insect migra-

bait. One cf the most effective ways

of controlling this insect ig to dust in

the early morning or late afternoon
with ca'cium arsenate. Another meth-
od_ i is to spray the field with gq mix-
ture of three pounds of calcium arse-
nate to fifty gallons of water. The

The bait is made as follows: Mix 50

pounds of wheat bran, 1 pound of Par-

About an inch across when the wings are spread. Pure white
in color, sometimes marked with black spots on wings.

Eggs laid in clusters of several hundred on under side of leaves,

CATERPILLARS * :

Upon hatching the young caterpillars commence feeding upon
the surface of the leaves and as they feed they enclose the foliage
in a web. When they exhaust the food within the web they enlarge

it, including more and more leaves until the entire tip of the branch
is covered, forming the unsightly nest with its enclosed brown and
dead leaves which is such a familar sight on many kinds, of trees.
The caterpillars are usually yellow and are clothed with long black
and yellow hairs. Occassionally they are very dark, almost black
in color. ;

When fully grown the larvae leave the nests and crawl to some
secluded spot, under loose bark, under boards and sometimes just
below the surface of the scil. Here they pupate and later the moths
emerge to lay eggs for the next generation.

eke Southern Georgia there are two broods a year and a partial

third brood. That is, some of the late caterpillars of the second

brood do not mature the first season. The insect spends the win-
ter in the pupal state, the moths emerging in the spring. The first

nests appear about the middle of May, the second brood nests ap-

pearing in August and September, and the partial third brood also
appearing late in September and into Ottober.
IMPORTANCE be

In 1916 around Thomasville this species was most abundant and
by the middle of. September several groves were almost defoliated.

Most of these groves were young ones; but one, composed of nine

year old trees, wag so severely attacked that by the end of Septem-
ber somewhat over 40 per cent of the foliage of the entire grove had
been eaten by the caterpillars. Of course this work was not evenly
distributed, so that while a very few trees were not attacked, many
were entirely defoliated. In addition to eating the foliage the cater-
pillars fed on the shucks of the nuts. Ag a result the shells were
badly stained and it was practicaily impossible to remove the un-
eaten portion of the shucks from_the nuts, so that the crop on these
trees was almost worthless.

CONTROL

Such outbreaks are eritirely unnecessary if care ig taken to de-

-stroy the caterpillars early in the season. They can be burned with

a torch, or. cut off and burned later.
